Dog Welfare & Veterinary Internship in Ghana
Program Overview
Make a difference in the lives of vulnerable dogs through an animal welfare and veterinary care internship in Bolgatanga, in Ghana’s Upper East Region. In collaboration with Future For Africa and local veterinary and animal welfare partners, this developing initiative aims to improve the health and welfare of dogs through veterinary care, rescue, rehabilitation, community education, and responsible adoption.
This programme offers an opportunity to gain practical experience in animal welfare while learning about the challenges and opportunities surrounding dog care in Ghana. Participants will contribute to efforts to protect vulnerable dogs, including those at risk of entering the dog meat trade, while supporting humane, community-led solutions.
What Will You Do?
Depending on your background, qualifications, and the project's current activities, you may contribute to:
Veterinary care: Support supervised vaccination, parasite prevention, health assessments, and other animal health initiatives.
Rescue and rehabilitation: Help care for rescued dogs, support their socialisation, and contribute to their recovery and well-being.
Animal welfare education: Assist with community outreach promoting responsible dog ownership, rabies prevention, and humane treatment of animals.
Adoption and fostering: Help develop adoption profiles, support foster-care initiatives, and promote responsible adoption by Ghanaian families and, where appropriate, international adopters.
Project development: Contribute to animal records, fundraising, communications, awareness campaigns, and partnerships with veterinary clinics and animal welfare organisations.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to all the most common questions about Future For Africa.
Do I need previous veterinary or animal care experience to participate
No. We welcome applications from people passionate about animal welfare, including first-time volunteers. Veterinary students, qualified veterinarians, and animal science students may be particularly interested in the programme. Activities will depend on your experience, qualifications, and the project's operational arrangements. Clinical procedures must be performed by qualified veterinary professionals.
What will I do during the dog welfare internship?
Participants may help with daily dog care, feeding, cleaning, socialisation, animal welfare education, fundraising, and adoption awareness. Depending on your qualifications and the activities available during your placement, you may also have opportunities to observe or support veterinary initiatives alongside local professionals.
Where is the programme located?
The programme is planned for Bolgatanga and the wider Upper East Region of Ghana. Participants will have the opportunity to experience life in northern Ghana while contributing to a community-focused animal welfare initiative. Accommodation and local transport arrangements should be confirmed before booking.
How long can I participate?
We recommend a placement of at least two weeks to allow time to understand the project, learn about local animal welfare challenges, and contribute meaningfully. Longer placements may be possible depending on project capacity and the availability of suitable activities. Please confirm your preferred dates and duration before making travel arrangements.
Will I work directly with dogs rescued from the dog meat trade?
The project aims to support vulnerable dogs, including those at risk of entering the dog meat trade. Depending on the project's operational capacity, participants may contribute to animal care, rehabilitation, welfare education, and initiatives supporting humane alternatives. Specific rescue activities and access to dogs will depend on local partnerships and the circumstances of individual animals.
Can I participate if I am studying veterinary medicine?
Yes. Veterinary students are an important potential participant group. The internship is intended to provide opportunities to learn about preventive veterinary care, animal welfare, rehabilitation, and community-based approaches to animal health. Any clinical experience will depend on your training level, the availability of a qualified supervisor, and Ghanaian professional requirements.
Will I be able to adopt a dog and take it home?
The project aims to develop responsible adoption pathways for dogs in Ghana and, where appropriate, internationally. However, adoption and international transport are not guaranteed components of an individual internship. Anyone interested in adopting a dog must follow the project's adoption procedures and comply with Ghanaian export regulations and the destination country's animal import requirements.
What does the programme fee cover?
The programme fee will depend on the placement duration and the arrangements confirmed with Future For Africa. Depending on the package, it may contribute towards accommodation, meals, local transport, volunteer coordination, and project activities. Veterinary treatment, dog food, rescue expenses, and international travel may involve additional costs. Participants should request a detailed breakdown of included services and any extra expenses bef
