Assistant wildlife keeper

by: Amazon Shelter

As a volunteer at Amazon Shelter, you’ll be immersed in every part of our vital conservation work. From preparing specialized diets and feeding the animals to enriching their enclosures, collecting fresh leaves for our Howler monkeys, cleaning habitats, and assisting with repairs and maintenance, you’ll play an active role in the daily care and rehabilitation of wild animals. Every task you take on helps restore the lives of animals affected by deforestation, illegal trafficking, and habitat destruction. Your work directly supports the health of one of the planet’s most fragile and essential ecosystems. You'll learn from experienced wildlife keepers and veterinarians, gaining hands-on knowledge about how a real conservation project operates and deepening your understanding of native Amazonian species. And perhaps best of all, you’ll live in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, surrounded by a community of people who share your love for nature, wildlife, and sustainable living. Come ready for hard work, deep connection, and a life-changing adventure. This is more than volunteering; it’s your chance to be part of something significant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why volunteer at Amazon Shelter?

As a volunteer at Amazon Shelter, you’ll be immersed in every part of our vital conservation work. From preparing specialized diets and feeding the animals, to enriching their enclosures, collecting fresh leaves for our Howler monkeys, cleaning habitats, and assisting with repairs and maintenance, you’ll play an active role in the daily care and rehabilitation of wild animals.

What's the accomodation?

We have a dedicated volunteer lodge where you will stay in one of our shared rooms. Generally, you will share with one or two other volunteers. In low season or when we are not busy, you may even have a room to yourself. We have shared bathrooms – no hot water (it’s usually so hot you won’t miss it) and a washing area for laundry. We also have a campfire area and a volleyball court.

Is there a time off?

Volunteering with us is deeply rewarding, but everyone needs a little time to recharge. You’ll have one day off per week to relax and explore the incredible surroundings. Whether you're curious about local culture or the Amazon’s natural wonders, there’s something for everyone. Spend the day in the nearby town of Puerto Maldonado, where you can enjoy local markets, cafés, and artisan shops.

Getting Here & Getting Around?

We’re happy to help make your journey as smooth as possible. We can arrange a taxi to pick you up from Puerto Maldonado’s airport or bus station and bring you straight to the shelter, costing around 40 soles. If you need to head into town on your day off or in the evenings, please let us know so we can arrange a taxi for you at any time.

What to Bring?

 Footwear
• While we provide rubber boots in a variety of sizes, we recommend you bring some outdoor
work or hiking boots
• Sandals or flip-flops (for walking around volunteer areas and the dining room)
👕 Clothing
• Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty (you’ll be working outdoors and sweating!)
• Enough changes for daily wear
• Long trousers and long-sleeved shirts (for sun and insect protection)
• A wide-brimmed hat or cap (for sun protection)
