Types of formal courses. Many language schools in Quito offer Spanish (and other language) courses. Typically these are group lessons, and vary in price and intensity. Whether you take a few hours of class per week or study full time, there are many options. 

Tutoring/one-on-one learning. Finding a tutor who can give you individualised attention is a superb choice for language learning abroad in Quito. Whether you’re a beginner or trying to fine-tune your speaking ability, you will quickly learn from a native speaker. Do your best to speak the language the entire time with your tutor, and ask questions about Ecuadorian culture and history if they are a local!

Duration. Many people find that they end up staying longer than they originally planned after taking language courses in Quito, as they fall in love with the city and language (for this reason, we recommend buying a flexible return ticket). If you want to guarantee quick and effective progress, Quito is a good place to learn Spanish. Most of the locals speak the language and finding someone who can speak English, other than tourists, is rare. This motivates you to really learn and practice Spanish.

Many local people in Quito can speak basic Spanish, but the main language is Andean Spanish. This dialect is used in highland cities, including the historic capital city. The natives also speak Kichwa, a variety of Quechua spoken in Ecuador. You can only hear English conversations in areas with tourists such as restaurants and hotels.

Be prepared to take basic precautions and choose your itinerary wisely while traveling to Ecuador. Cases of crime, assault, and kidnapping (to name a few) significantly high in areas with criminal organizations. It’s best to read travel advisories before booking a flight to Ecuador.

Numerous factors make Quito special! It is one of the first UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites. It is nestled on the ruins of an Inca city, in the foothills of the Andes. Its historic center is the least modified and best preserved in Latin America. It straddles the equator, marked by the bright yellow line at the Mitad del Mundo. But the actual 0° latitude is found 240 meters away, on a dirt road.
