Zanzibar - Dolphin and Marine Conservation

Come and take part in this tropical island adventure in and around the white sand beaches of the matchless archipelago of Zanzibar, just off the Tanzanian coast in East Africa. Participants live in Jambiani and work primarily in Kizimkazi. With up to fourteen other volunteers, you will research and protect bottle-nose and humpback dolphins as well as fish, birds, whales (seasonal), and other marine life that live on and around the scattered islands. The focal effort of the conservation project is to monitor the human-dolphin interactions which play a large role in the amount of stress put on the dolphins and could potentially lead to a smaller dolphin population. The studies that volunteers carry out can advise the government to create the most ideal policies on how to regulate such tourist activities. The data collected by participants is fed into various studies and surveys conducted by the research and academic institutions of Zanzibar. The work and contributions that you will make as a volunteer are extremely crucial and much needed by the marine conservation efforts of Zanzibar.

Learn to Build a Traditional Sailing Dhow in Zanzibar

A dhow is a traditional Arab sailing vessel with one or more lateen sails. It is primarily used to carry items along the coasts of the Arabian Peninsula, Pakistan, India, and East Africa. The term "dhow" does not refer to just one type of ship but to a whole family of vessels, ranging from small boats with just one mast to cargo ships carrying over 200 tons. The Zanzibari dhow builders are well-known throughout the Indian Ocean for their amazing work. They build traditional dhows upon order and, depending on the size of the ship, take between two weeks and four months to construct. In Nungwi/Zanzibar, you have the unique opportunity to take part in the construction of a dhow and to learn everything about traditional dhow-building. An experienced dhow-building master who has learned his skills from his father (the family has been building dhows for generations) will give you 2 hours of dhow-building lessons per day. During the other hours of the day, you can observe the craftsmen and assist them.

The best 2 weeks of my life!

Honestly the best 2 weeks of my life. I had a blast and have made many memories on this trip I will never forget. First of all, the guides were awesome and amazing people. Very friendly, easy to to talk to, and always checking up on you and making sure you are having fun. The group I was with were also amazing and always had excellent energy throughout the whole trip. Everyone was willing to connect, share stories, play games, and let their authenticity show. I really loved the way the trip was organized and scheduled. We knew what time to wake up, go to sleep, when we were going to do our activities, etc. It was very educational and I learned a lot about the people, the culture, the environment, and the problems the country faces. I loved the diversity in activities and how we actually connected and exchanged cultural ideas with locals in rural communities that you don’t usually get to see. Overall, a 10/10. Would totally go on another trip in the future!
