Volunteer and Teach in Kenya

* Volunteer and Teach in Kenya! Volunteers on the Teaching program in Kenya are placed in community schools, public schools or orphanage schools. Many of the schools we work with are constantly understaffed and are always in need of new volunteers. In this program, volunteers can work by themselves or alongside other teachers and volunteers. Typical subjects taught include English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Art and Physical Education. School in Kenya runs for three terms a year (Term One - January to March, Term Two - May to July, Term Three - September to November). There are short breaks between these terms in the months of April, August and December during which time volunteers can take a break, travel, engage in tourist activities such as safari, take tutorials for senior students, or participate in another placement. An example placement: Dagorretti Primary School This school is located approximately 10 minutes out of Kibera and provides education for over 300 children ranging age from 5-15. Similar to many schools in this area, there is a desperate shortage of teachers and professional to help educate the children. * Volunteer and Teach in Maasai-land! With the introduction of free primary school education in Kenya, the Kenyan Government was faced with a dilemma. A large amount of students entitled to an education and a comparative lack of teachers. Teaching at a Maasai community school is an experience like no other. Giraffes often wander freely around the school grounds and it is no big deal to have some wild animal burrow holes through the school fields overnight. Typical subjects taught include - English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Art and Physical Education. Volunteers do not need to be qualified teachers, or have previous teaching experience.

Special needs in Kenya

I had a wonderful experience in Kenya with IVHQ. I was there for four weeks and volunteered with the special needs program. While it's not required on the website or through IVHQ to have experience, I highly suggest only doing the special needs program if you do as there isn't specific training for working with kids with special needs during orientation and some of the placements are very challenging. The classroom I taught in had 43 students with moderate to intensive special needs and only two teachers! I am a special education teacher, so while I was definitely overwhelmed the first day, I was able to jump in and adapt quickly. Others who were in the special needs program without any prior experience were very overwhelmed and ended up switching placements. There isn't any training as it relates to teaching during orientation. Overall my time with IVHQ was incredible! My placement was AMAZING and the kids absolutely stole my heart! I still keep in touch with the teacher at the school as well as others I met in Kenya. The staff on site in Kenya were so kind, personable and easy to reach for any sort of help. I would definitely travel with IVHQ again.
