Program Overview

Volunteer at an ethical Big Cat sanctuary based on a beautiful wildlife reserve in the province of the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Your role largely involves assisting with the ongoing care of big cats saved from dire captive situations, wherein many come from zoos across Ukraine. These big cats (11 lions and a tiger) can never be released due to their backgrounds in captivity.

As a volunteer, you provide assistance in various aspects of the sanctuary:
Food and vitamin preparations
Feeding routines
Fundraising
Animal monitoring and record keeping
Animal enclosure maintenance, maybe even construction of new ones
Enclosure fence checks, normally done twice a day (first and last task)
Creating enrichment items – the most fun part of the project
Educational tours
Perimeter fence checking
Bush clearing and alien plant removal on the reserve
Bush walks and monitoring of free-roaming wildlife
Veterinary procedures, maybe include observation (should they happen during your stay)
Overall day-to-day running of the sanctuary
