Volunteer & Trek in Patagonia: Regenerative Agriculture

by: Trek Relief

Join Trek Relief for a 7-day volunteer and trekking adventure in the Aysén region of Chilean Patagonia this December. Working alongside Fundación Renoval, a local environmental nonprofit, volunteers will build greenhouse infrastructure and support regenerative agriculture education in local schools — part of a formal initiative to bring school gardens to 60+ schools across the region. No prior experience required. All project work is community-requested and locally led. After the service days, the group treks through Patagonia National Park's Valle Chacabuco — a breathtaking multi-day backpacking route through one of the world's last truly wild landscapes. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need prior volunteer or outdoor experience to join this trip?

No experience is required. All project work at the school sites is guided by Fundación Renoval's local team — you'll be supporting them in whatever capacity is needed. For the trekking portion, a moderate fitness level is recommended as you'll be walking 6–10 miles per day with a backpack. As long as you're willing to show up and put in the effort, you're welcome on this trip.

What is the $2,750 minimum contribution and where does it go?

The minimum contribution is split into two parts: the charitable portion covers project materials, logistics, and support for Fundación Renoval's school garden program in Aysén. The trip fee portion covers all ground transport, accommodation, meals, trekking logistics, and permits throughout the 7 days. Trek Relief directs 85–88 cents of every dollar directly to programs.

What should I expect from the weather and conditions in Patagonia?

Patagonia's weather is famously unpredictable — sun, wind, rain, and cold can all happen in the same day. December falls in Patagonian summer, which brings longer daylight hours and milder temperatures, but flexibility is essential. Layers, waterproof gear, and a willingness to adapt are your best preparation.

What does a typical day on this trip look like?

The first few days are dedicated to hands-on service work at local school sites in the Aysén region — building greenhouse infrastructure, establishing gardens, and participating in community workshops alongside local educators and builders. The remaining days transition into the trekking adventure through Patagonia National Park, with evenings at a working permaculture farm and traditional Patagonian meals prepared by a local cook.

How do I fund my trip if I can't cover the full contribution myself?

Trek Relief offers several pathways to make participation accessible. You can launch a personal fundraising page and invite your network to contribute, check if your employer offers corporate donation matching, apply for the Trek Together Fund — Trek Relief's internal financial aid program — or earn trip credits through the Work Trade program by contributing your skills.
