Great experience!

Studying abroad at the American University in Cairo (AUC) was nothing short of transformative. From the moment I stepped onto the AUC New Cairo campus, I felt immersed in a dynamic academic environment that was both intellectually rigorous and deeply supportive. The university’s state-of-the-art facilities, globally diverse student body, and emphasis on cross-cultural exchange made it the ideal place to grow both academically and personally. What stood out most was the unique opportunity to engage with Egypt’s rich history and contemporary society—both inside and outside the classroom. My professors encouraged critical discussion, integrated regional issues into course material, and consistently fostered global perspectives. AUC’s emphasis on experiential learning meant that lessons often extended beyond the classroom, into the museums, monuments, and neighborhoods of Cairo. Living in Egypt provided an invaluable lens into a culture steeped in tradition, resilience, and warmth. From the vibrant markets of Khan el-Khalili to peaceful moments along the Nile, each day offered something unexpected and enriching. I had the chance to engage with local communities, practice Arabic, and explore the complex social and political landscapes that shape modern Egypt. This experience not only broadened my academic horizons but also helped me grow in confidence, adaptability, and cultural sensitivity. I leave Egypt with a deeper appreciation for global interconnectedness and with friendships and memories that I’ll carry with me forever. To any student considering AUC: take the leap. The lessons you’ll learn—about the world and about yourself—will last a lifetime.

Even though the New Cairo campus is far from the city, we can take the AUC buses from different areas to get here, so the access is fairly easy. It is a modern campus with a very big library and gardens. The professors are excellent.

I learned that the culture of Egypt is so welcoming though sometimes I was not treated the same way I am treated in my home country, but that is life. It is all about experiences. To add on that, studying at AUC is a rewarding and life changing opportunity for an overseas students to experience different cultures and cuisines.

I recently had the opportunity to participate in the exchange program at The American University in Cairo (AUC) (Spring 2023), and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking a transformative and enriching academic experience. From the moment I arrived on campus until the day I left, my time at AUC was filled with incredible learning opportunities, cultural immersion, and personal growth. One of the standout aspects of the exchange program at AUC is the exceptional academic environment. The university boasts a renowned faculty who are experts in their respective fields, offering a wealth of knowledge and diverse perspectives. The courses I took were engaging and intellectually stimulating, challenging me to think critically and pushing me to expand my horizons. Whether it was in the humanities, social sciences, or business disciplines, I found the academic rigor at AUC to be of the highest quality. Another highlight of the exchange program was the vibrant and multicultural campus community. AUC attracts students from all over the world, creating a truly global learning environment. Interacting with fellow students from diverse backgrounds not only enhanced my understanding of different cultures but also fostered lifelong friendships. The university also organizes various cultural events, extracurricular activities, and clubs that provide ample opportunities for socializing, networking, and exploring the rich Egyptian heritage. Living in Cairo, one of the most historically significant and culturally vibrant cities in the world, was an unforgettable experience. The city's energy, bustling markets, stunning architecture, and ancient landmarks offer a unique backdrop for students to immerse themselves in Egyptian culture. AUC's central location in Cairo allows for easy exploration of the city's iconic sites, such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Egyptian Museum, and the vibrant neighborhoods of Zamalek and Maadi. The university also organizes excursions and cultural trips that further enrich the student experience. The support and resources provided by AUC were exceptional. The university has a dedicated team of staff members who are always ready to assist international students, ensuring a smooth transition and providing support throughout the program. From academic advisors to housing services, AUC prioritizes the well-being and success of its students. Lastly, the exchange program at AUC offers the opportunity for personal growth and self-discovery. Living and studying in a foreign country can be challenging, but it also presents a chance to develop resilience, adaptability, and a global perspective. The exchange program at AUC encourages students to step out of their comfort zones, embrace new experiences, and gain a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. In conclusion, if you are seeking an exchange program that combines academic excellence, cultural immersion, and personal growth, I highly recommend The American University in Cairo. The university's commitment to providing a well-rounded experience, along with its outstanding faculty, diverse student body, and vibrant campus community, make it an ideal destination for any student looking to expand their horizons and create lifelong memories. My time at AUC was truly transformative, and I am grateful for the invaluable experiences and knowledge I gained during my exchange program.

Being a master's student at AUC was an eye-opening experience. At the department of chemistry, you will have the chance to work in multiple fields. In fact, you don't have to stick to one aspect of chemistry, if you are not comfortable working on organic synthesis, for example, you can choose to work on analytical, bio or inorganic chemistry. Just choose your professor wisely. Even nano-drug delivery systems and in vivo studies can be considered under the umbrella of chemistry. You'll find many courses about food chemistry. However, if you are interested in pure chemistry, the courses may not be offered since the majority of students prefer the food chemistry courses. I found this as a disadvantage since I wanted to take courses regarding NMR and structure elucidation but these courses are not chosen by students and therefore they don't usually open. One great thing about AUC is that you can apply for a grant to finance your research. Also you can apply for a grant if you wan to spend one semester abroad or to apply for a conference. The university covers you in these regards. Make sure you are financially covered regarding the tuition fees. The tuition fees of AUC is HIGH and working in Egypt will not cover you. I do not think that there are jobs in Egypt that can afford paying 2200 USD for only 1 course whereas you have to finish 8 courses and 3 thesis courses. That's 11 courses. If you are accepted in a full scholarship or your home university/country got you covered, you'll have the best experience at AUC. If not, you can apply for the partial fellowship that covers part of the tuition fees. Yu might get accepted in a fellowship that covers only 1 course per semester. At this point you might want to have only one course for that semester and in this case you won't pay, or pay for other 1 or courses from your own pocket to finish your studies faster. Try to apply for teaching assistanship (TA) and research assistanship (RA) opportunities. They are numerous and will support you somehow financially in addition to new experiences and potentially new publications.

AUC is great. You will meet a lot of people from different cultures. It has truly been a remarkable experience. AUC fostered an environment of inclusivity and excitement. The STEM department is amazing and the rigor was perfect taking classes as a Biology and Chemistry major. AUC often lacks organization, however being here is an experience I do not regret.

I studied abroad at AUC during the Fall 2022 semester. Overall, I am very grateful for the experience of getting to come to Cairo and take courses at AUC. In my early months in Cairo, I found it a bit difficult to secure the proper arrangements for cellphone service and debit cards in Egypt. However, after I figured out how to best handle these things, it was rather smooth sailing. Egypt has several great sites and AUC can be a great resource for travel and exploration there.

I was in AUC as an exchange graduate student for 4 months. I wanted to learn Arabic and experience new forms of learning and I really enjoyed the time I spent in there. The campus is beautiful, the teachers really committed and helpful and all the staff is really nice. Though I was studying in New Cairo, I was leaving in Downtown Cairo. I would recommend doing so if you want to experience the cultural aspect and all the specificities that make Cairo, Cairo.

I studied here Fall 2022 and it was overall a great experience! Would recommend. Pre-departure: was a bit hectic and nerve racking especially with housing and classes! I recommend being on top of things if u want auc housing and to enroll in classes as early as possible. Everything works out tho! During my time abroad: was great! So much to do in Egypt where u really don't need to travel out of the country. People are generally very nice and knowing some Arabic will help but no necessary. There were several events on campus during the semester which was great! Classes were standard, it was nice as an American student to have a very similar curriculum. Professors and students are very lax. Highly recommend living in the buildings near campus also! As a Black girl studying abroad, felt safe the entire time!

I am a student from the US, and I studied abroad at AUC during the fall of my junior year. The university is very supportive or international students, and the staff at the IPSP office was so helpful for answering any questions both before I arrived and once I got here. We began with an international student orientation, so most of the people I met at the beginning were only international students. It also turned out that most of my classmates were international. I do wish I had been able to be in more classes with Egyptian students. However, I was able to meet Egyptian students through extracurricular activities, and almost everyone I met was so welcoming, and truly seemed to care about getting to know me and making sure I enjoyed my time here. I also chose to live on campus, which had pros and cons. The rooms and very nice, and have lots of amenities. The office of residential life also puts on lots of programming for the students who live there. However, living on campus in New Cairo meant that it was a long trip to get downtown (about an hour drive). Therefore, I didn’t get to spend as much time in the heart of Cairo as I would have liked. I knew several people who chose to live downtown, which is also a viable option, but it would have meant a long commute to school everyday. I was mostly satisfied with my classes here. I found that, like with any university, the quality of the class largely depends on the professor. Some of my professors were very engaging, and others were more boring. However, I found that all professors were very flexible, and opening to feedback from their students, which they would use the make tangible changes to their classes. At some points, I even felt like they took too much student feedback, like consulting us for when tests should be, and how much of our final grade they should count for.

As a Syrian student living in Egypt, the AUC was the best university for me to pursue my master degree. Here, the courses focuses more on building the academic curiosity of yours. Searching, researching and presenting the data are perhaps the things you are going to learn the most. Beside this, you might get the chance to teach by yourself, if you are a graduate student,to get an insight from the tutor's prospective. Fellowships are numerous for master students, locals and internationals, but the majority of them are partial, covering maybe 1 or 2 courses per semester out of 8 required courses (in most of the faculties). International students can apply for the International students fellowship which is fully-funded covering 9 credit hours (3 courses) per semester for 2 years. Fellowships usually come with a stipend and with a housing allowance for some international students. The health insurance for international students is mandatory, it is relatively expensive. However, many fellowships cover it. But you need to know that you need to pay for the doctor visit and medication from your many, then you fill a claim with all the documents and wait for them to compensate and, honestly, they take too long to respond. The vibes of the university are great with too many activities and celebrations. The spot facilities are great and open freely for all students, you just have to book for it first.

Being from the other side of the world has allowed me to contrast my upbringing with my current expe3in Cairo and at AUC in particular. I consider myself a real Latino lover. Don't take me wrong, thoug. What I mean is that I'm a lover of diversity, art, music, culture and, above all, dancing. To be honest, my expectations at AUC have been fulfilled. I've found a charming community full of colors, sounds and smells. Turning to the academic part of it, I love my classes and lecturers. It can turn a bit demanding at times but I've seen them through so far. The classrooms and campus are also spectacular.

The semester abroad at the American University in Cairo passes by so quickly because the course load is demanding and the opportunities Cairo and Egypt offer are endless. However, you’ll be supported in your endeavours by instructors and the Student Union, who are all very helpful and kind. In general, the time spent in Cairo is more than worthwhile, learning the language is of huge help for daily live and walking through the city and the country with open eyes and ears will teach you a lot about its society and culture. All in all, my semester abroad at AUC was at times a demanding but definitely unique and formative experience i would not want to miss!

I am very much satisfied with my time at AUC as an exchange student, as I have the opportunity to combine relevant classes about the region and its language with a mode exploratory life in Cairo. I appreciate the quality of my professors' teaching even though the required work for classes is demanding. The campus is a beautiful space and buzzing with activities, yet a bubble far away from the city centre. For anyone wishing to experience different realities of Cairo, I would advise not to live on campus. And finally, I regret that it is only possible to take Arabic classes within the credit allowance granted for exchange students and not 'for free', as the quality of the teaching is worth encouraging more students to make the effort. Overall a very door opening experience as it allows me to see the country from many different perspectives!

I finished my undergraduate studies at AUC- School of Business with a Degree in in Economics (BA). It was definitely a fruitful experience with huge exposure. There are various resources in AUC, many of them, unfortunately are not known to students. Academic wise, professors, academic resources, and design of curriculum are top notch. However, so mush bureaucracy and randomness could take place and impacts the quality of teaching.

Going to AUC and living in Egypt provides you with such a unique experience. The country itself builds your character and sharpens your communication skills, and the courses at AUC will definitely help you expand your knowledge about Egypt and the MENA region. Besides the vibrant city of Cairo, the AUC campus itself has a high-spirited active life of its own. Filled with a wide range of events and facilities, it includes multicultural sessions, musicals, theatre, webinars, academic events, career, workshops on mental health, and so much more! It's never a dull moment in here.

The academics at AUC are very good. Class offerings are very interesting, and professors are always interested in helping you succeed. Many are more focused on what students are learning than formal assessments, which is really nice. Classwork is generally easier than classwork in the states, but exams are generally a little harder. Overall, the academics are about as difficult as classes in the US. The cultural experiences, though, are what make AUC shine. Travel within Cairo and Egypt is easy and the Travel Office and International Program/Student Office make it even easier. Although I have enjoyed the academic aspect of this semester quite a bit, I have absolutely loved the ability to visit Ancient Egyptian, Medieval Islamic, and modern post-colonial sites in Cairo and beyond. My semester abroad will be defined by the places I visited and the people I met there.

Ever since I was young, I wanted to live abroad long enough to say I really "lived" in that country. I'm so happy I chose AUC and Cairo. I'm doing my entire master's in Arabic literature while (trying) to learn Egyptian Arabic at the same time! What you learn here depends on how much effort you put in. In the classroom, you can easily get by with only doing the bare minimum of readings, or you can participate more in discussions, ask professors about their research and tell them about your own, etc. Plus, the ARIC department always has interesting lectures and events about Arabic and Islamic studies. Outside the classroom, if you choose to live farther away from campus, you will be sure to use Egyptian Arabic every day at the produce markets, in the cafes, etc. Come with an open mind and a lot of patience, since at first there is so much going on in busy downtown that it can seem overwhelming. You will see how first hand, MSA/fusHa, the Arabic you probably learned in school unless you were lucky enough to have an Egyptian Arabic course, is not spoken in real life. This is challenging, but a lot of fun if you enjoy languages.

As an international student, I feel proud for having chosen AUC to pursue my undergraduate degree abroad. AUC is very rich, both culturally and academically. I was amazed by its palpable sense of community, its architectural splendour and most importantly, the rigorousness of its academic program. Here at AUC, you can meet a myriad of nationalities, learn about cultures without even having to move. Learning about each other's stories is very inspiring, and it's as if you wandered the world. if you're looking to study in a dense cultural hub, AUC would be your ideal destination.

The American University in Cairo has a unique campus that reflects the Arabic architectural style, making it worth visiting. It also has beautiful dorms with many places to relax and breathe some fresh air in front of its fabulous gardens. It is so satisfying to walk around in the gardens. The university also delivers high-quality education through its various programs and many student clubs to join.

I came to AUC for my bachelor's degree in Computer science. I can't describe how great is my experience in AUC. The computer science program as well as all STEM programs are all well designed and organized in a way to make the students prepared for the workforce. I appreciate the organization of the courses along with the interesting opportunities and events that are made to make us enjoy our college life and get familiarized with the field at the same time. I am really satisfied with my experience in AUC and encourage anyone who wants to go on a study abroad journey to come to AUC. Also, Cairo is such a beautiful city where you'll never get bored. Many student organizations and clubs do everything they can to make us, international students, enjoy the city and Egypt in general.

I first stepped on campus in 2016 when I attended a conference at AUC and since that moment knew I wanted to go back and study there. The campus is enchanting with incredible architecture, gardens, and year-round great weather. When I applied to AUC I knew I was applying to one of the best universities in the region and I am now in my second semester. I would recommend AUC to undergraduates or graduate students that are looking for an incredible adventure.

I definitely had higher expectations for the classes and course material here, there were very few options for my area of interest and a lot that were listed in the course catalog were not offered. Overall, I am taking 4 classes and I genuinely like only 2. The professors are definitely more accustomed to the Egyptian system of education than the American one, so do not expect things to be similar at all. AUC itself is the most beautiful campus in the world, and I never get bored walking around. The location of AUC is probably my biggest complaint, although there is nothing to change about it. New Cairo is situated so incredibly far from the rest of Cairo, downtown, etc. so it is inconvenient and I have spent more money on Uber than I have on anything else, There is an abundance of student life on campus that ranges from clubs, groups, events, and lectures. The on-campus housing is very nice (considering the price) and it is a decent walking distance from all classes. The food options are okay, Tabali is definitely the best and cheapest, while the cafeteria offers a wide range of choices at a decent price. Overall, the atmosphere, student life, and student support from faculty is what makes AUC a wonderful university.

Campus is beautiful, classes interesting (there is so much to choose from!), and people are nice. Egypt is a great place for exchange students, because people here are so open and easy to talk to. The student support (once you get to AUC) is, in my experience, unparalleled. The biggest dilemma is choosing where to live, as campus is in New Cairo and that's quite a commute from Cairo proper.

My experience abroad was definitely unique and as a student who enjoys networking I believe I got to experience some of the best opportunities while studying in Egypt. In my stay, I took classes in my major with majority local Egyptian students and got to understand their perspectives and techniques in our field of Mass Media Communications. I participated in music video production projects, got interviewed for the university's study abroad promotional campaigns and participated in the university's Centennial International Day representing Mexico and as a Mexican American I visited the Mexican Embassy in Egypt extending the invitation to the event. The excursions provided to through the university in Egypt explored modern and old Coptic Cairo, The Pyramids, The Egyptian Museums, trips to Oasis and other iconic cities of Egypt. Lastly, I was able to take free short term Egyptian Arabic Colloquial course to learn basic survival Arabic needed in Egypt.

The American University in Cairo offers the experience of an affluent and academically excellent American university located in beautiful and historical Egypt. That is, you get to attend a university based on the American highly and globally acknowledged system and explore a new and interesting culture all the while. AUC offers a high amount of interesting courses in several fields. The quality of the academics presented here is very high, and once you settle for courses that match your level, you can be sure that they will impact your general education. Professors are competent, helpful and friendly, and the relation between professors and students is somewhat relaxed although it is also formal. The communication at the university is generally incredible whether it is between students and professors or students and administration. You will find an appropriate office located within campus for any issue you may have, where you can ask for help and guidance. Besides the academics, AUC offers several options for social life on and off campus, and there are scheduled events every week. There are student organisations, unions and sport teams. There are some arranged trips around Egypt initiated by the university, which is perfect for the students abroad, who get the chance to go and explore in groups. Additionally, if you still do enjoy academic content in your free time, there are always additional (and very interesting!) lectures to attend on campus throughout the day. The security and safety of campus are very reliable and generally good as well as is daily life in Cairo. Whether on or off campus, people are generally friendly and helpful, and it is easy to make friends. This is an important chance to experience the "true" Egyptian culture firsthand, which you should not miss out on. I will recommend AUC to any exchange/study abroad student!

I have one month left of my study abroad experience at AUC, and I wish it weren't coming to an end. The campus is beautiful, students and faculty are friendly, and the academics are rather impressive. I felt so unprepared to visit a MENA country for the first time, but AUC offers the perfect balance of "home" and Egyptian culture. I am a business student, and all of the business courses are challenging, engaging, and interesting. I also study Arabic, and I have made so much progress in the past few months! The student dorms are much nicer than an American dorm I've ever seen, and safety is top notch. The visa process through the school was a bit unclear and troublesome, but everything worked out before my tourist visa expired. The International Programming Office is incredibly helpful for any issue you might have, and I was surrounded by other international students fro all over the world.

A really great university experience and a decent but incomplete cultural experience

Upsides: - The AUC campus is amazing. It is gorgeous, clean, and offers all the infrastructure that you need and much more. Expecially the sports complex is incredible. - There are usually just a dozen (maximum two dozen) students in each class, which renders the learning experience very intimate. The professors are skilled and accessible. - There are many activities offered on campus, and many student associations / sports clubs to choose from. - The Arabic classes are of great quality. Downsides: - The new campus is quite far from the city center - The whole environment can feel a bit elitist at times. Altough AUC is a good start, if you want to experience the "real" Egypt, meaning the whole of the Egyptian society, you need to go outside the uni and get to meet non-AUCians as well. Overall a really great university experience and a decent but not complete cultural experience.

This has been an interesting semester with being in a country where English is not the main language. I am currently a master student enrolled in the Global Public Health program at the AUC. It has been such a privilege and honor. My director and the institutes dean work very hard to recruit the best teachers from all over the world so that we can have a full rounded education. The one thing I specifically like is how your professors become your friends and how there is an open door policy with nearly all professors. The campus holds a lot of events for the students and never leaves them bored. This ranges from public sport events like zumba to open air concerts. AUC also has a range of clubs where you can pursue any of your talents like art, music, literature, economics and finance, health issues and political science. I really encourage anyone to come to the AUC, not only because of the outstanding academic standards and campus life, but also because of Egypt's history and tourism.

After living in Abu Dhabi for 18 years, I chose to study at AUC. I never regretted my decision as it is a place that I learn different things and also have friends in. The liberal arts program has helped me to find my true passion aside from Mass communication which is business. Also, i have discovered a lot about the Egyptian culture like how they dress, eat and behave. Consequently, I became in love with the culture as I never lived in my country. Discovering Egypt by trips AUC does every now and then way a great experience. Also, I loved how the university is diverse with all cultures in Egypt in addition to also their mentality. Doctors in the university are always eager to teach us and make us learn something. Hence, studying abroad in Egypt has a lot of advantages and it is a must to try it❤️

A cultural and academic adventure!

I would describe my semester in Egypt as an enormous cultural adventure! Coming from a western country, going to Cairo is a big change. About 95% of the students, so in my case, I was the only international student in most of my classes. Luckily, all the courses are in English and all the teachers (and most of the students) are fluent in English and do not mind switching from Arabic to Engish when you join the conversation. The campus is very luxurious and has a beautiful garden where you can sit if it is not too hot outside. The buildings were a bit of a maze to me when I first arrived, since they are all in the same Cairo architectural style, but that is just something to get used to. There are campus dorms that are very safe and look very comfortable. However, they are quite expensive and there is sometimes a waiting list. There are plenty of (very cheap) housing options outside of the campus. It is easy to team up with other internationals in the first week to find an apartment together. The travel time will be a bit longer, but the school bus is comfortable (about 1.5 hours on average from the Cairo city center to campus, for around 2 dollars) The classes at AUC we easy to follow for me and the teachers provide generally enough information to practice, evaluate, and receive feedback. Most teachers give graded homework and pop quizzes next to the exams, a bit like in High School. The staff members warned me not to take too many "difficult" courses, however, the courses here are easier than in European universities. So don't be afraid to challenge yourself :) Before arrival, communication through email was a bit slow, last-minute, and incomplete, which caused some surprises and issues in the first week of arrival. Luckily, on campus the students and staff are very helpful, they helped me solve the issues. There are enough places to ask for help and support. Overall it was a worthwhile adventure that changed my perspective on culture and the Middle East, and I have learned many life lessons inside and outside the classes.

The American University in Cairo is among the top universities in Egypt, and as its name suggests, AUC follows the American education system. The university provided several field trips to its international students to cultural areas like the Giza Pyramids and Khan el Khalili at the beginning of the year. After that, I was part of the ALI program, and it was located in the Tahrir campus, so my experience differs from those of students in regular undergraduate studies at AUC. The Tahrir campus is in downtown Cairo and is quite central to events and places in the city but almost an hour away from the main campus in New Cairo. I would suggest living off campus because it is not only cheaper, but also takes you out of the AUC bubble and allows you to experience the real Cairo on a daily basis. The staff at AUC are friendly and ready to help you, and AUC has a great reputation in Egypt and includes many of the elite among its student population. Some have concerns about travelling to Egypt because of satey reasons. Yes, people are overly friendly to foreigners in the streets, especially if you are blond and white. However, my stay was comfortable, my neighborhood was safe, and the experiences I had were amazing.

My first hello was scared, my last goodbye is sad

It was hard in the beginning. A new country, a new culture, a new language. But all my fears were over after my first week. All the universities more and less do the same job, what distinguishes a good university from an average one is the extra-curricular activities. The orientation week plays a huge role in the whole semester. Well-organized week that allows students to know each other and to find you are not alone in your fears, but most importantly you are not alone in AUC. My first hello to this country was a scared hello, not because of AUC but the country itself. But now that is time to leave and to remember all the moments I lived in this university... it is a sad goodbye!

Before leaving for my trip I was excited and fearful at the same time. I could not wait to embark on all of the adventures that I knew Egypt could offer, but I was afraid of not knowing anyone, being alone, and missing out on all of the events that would go on at home while I was gone. Looking back now I feel silly for allowing these worries to cloud my mind. While missing things at home with loved ones did make me feel sad from time to time, I continuously reminded myself that no one back at home was experiencing the new and amazing things that I was in a foreign country. One of the most incredible parts of studying abroad was the opportunity to make new friends from all over the world. I now have some of the best friends of my life. Having the opportunity to spend time with people from all over the word opened my eyes to the way that things are done in other countries. Prior to studying abroad I only really knew what it was like to live in the Sudan, but now I have a greater knowledge of the cultures, governments, and customs of various countries throughout the world. In addition, the campus is very beautiful and staff is very professional which makes everything look more interesting and much easier.Believe me it is an experience of lifetime you should not miss.

With No Arabic knowledge yet being an African, the AUC experience was one that was worth it and definitely worth for self exploration to decide what Egypt means to you! The media shows a whole different side of Egypt, Moreover the negative side is what is shown as compared to its natural beauty. The AUC is a great institution with one of the most beautiful infrastructures that I’ve ever studied at! Extremely huge means traveling from one end to the other could take 10-15 mins. The courses and programs offered are interesting and valuable in terms of content. I came to pursue Journalism and Television, I enjoyed the theory and practical work that we learned through out the semester! I enjoyed the Egyptian natural beauty from the desert to the Red Sea to the night life in Zamalek. Other than language as a barrier, the Egyptians can somewhat seem friendly but the ignorance against race and ethnicity still exists.

Everyone told me it was going to be hard living in Cairo, but honestly now after 4 months I’m still wondering what they were referring to. It’s been very different, and nothing is as it’s “supposed” to be but everything get done and sorted anyway, just never in the way you assumed. Which is what makes everyday in Cairo exciting. You never know what’s going to happen. I have definitely enjoyed my semester at AUC, but for me the experience has been more about Egypt and Cairo that’s my studies, which is all intentional.

I am without a doubt very grateful for the chance to have studied in Cairo for the semester. The campus is beautiful, I felt safe, things generally ran rather smoothly (other than visa issues), the gym/pool and food options were great, and Cairo/Egypt was of course incredible. As far as academics, I didn't really feel challenged by my seminars to think critically or to really learn much new information (except for my one graduate-level course), so that was a bit of a downside. I found the classes were a bit too easy and yet they required a lot of busy work from me. Thankfully though I took the graduate-level seminar which was fascinating and I learned so much from that! So perhaps consider doing that yourself? Also, I study literature and communications, so perhaps it differs for each program. All in all though, I'm still very glad I came and would recommend it.

Semester abroad at the American University in Cairo

Overall I had an amazing and extremely rewarding experience at AUC. The campus looks like a resort and its sports facilities have everything you could possibly ask for. Going through the student-visa process can be a bit annoying, but that's just Egyptian bureaucracy I guess. Education wise it's good to do some research before booking your courses, as there is a great degree of variability in the quality of courses. I did some research on professors through the Facebook page of "Rate AUC professors" and asked AUC about the quality of professors. I ended up taking a total of three courses, and 2 of them were simply amazing, whereas 1 was just average. Regarding housing, I would advise students to live in downtown and not in New Cairo. There's a lot more going on and a lot more to discover. Additionally it's also much more authentic than the recently built and very artificial New Cairo. Overall I can highly recommend going to AUC. Your time in Cairo will be full of new adventures and new experiences. My 5 months here were nothing short of impressive and extremely rewarding.

I had my best semester ever, but with one catch..

December 14, 2018by: Magnus Furre Gjerde - Norway

Program: Study Abroad in Egypt at The American University in Cairo

4

I'll start with the compliments: The (New Cairo) campus is magnificent, it is so gorgeous that I go there even if I don't have to study. The food and coffee options are also great. The professors are amazing, they teach well, they're available and willing to interact with students, and they are one of the main reasons I've enjoyed my semester here. The library is all one could ask for. The sports opportunities have been excellent. I've lived in the AUC faculty housing, which I enjoyed a lot, mostly thanks to my roommates, but also thanks to the quality of the apartments and the kind security guards that greet us every day. Although pricy, I do not regret going for the AUC residences. There have been some nice cultural events, although I have not participated in many of them. But I appreciate the fact that these events are arranged for us students. Despite some delays with regards to visa, the staff of the Business support office are so nice that it hasn't bothered me much. Considering all this, this has truly been my best semester so far in my studies generally. HOWEVER, there is one thing which has been hard to miss while studying here. And that is the relationship between the AUC administration and the professors. I am not referring to the administration generally, for there are hundreds of people who do their job well and have nothing to do with the issue I will discuss here. What I am referring to is what I have heard and what I have myself witnessed of the relationship between the professors and the administration. There will always be a bit of push and pull between an administration and the professors, but it seems to me that the situation at the AUC is exceptionally bad. I will not go into great detail because I think most people will know what I am talking about. The relationship is at a "historic low" said the professor of a fellow student of mine, another professor said that the administration's treatment of professors was simply "demoralizing". For someone who has greatly appreciated his professors, and from what I have heard most other students do to, it is very disheartening to hear these stories. One concrete and extreme example is how my professor of comparative religions might get fired or lose his position simply because the son of the guy who established his academic chair suddenly decided that the professor should not teach religions broadly, but instead focus on the Abrahamic religions with special focus on Islam. Naturally, my professor refused, as it is unreasonable to the students who would be deprived of knowledge of other religions, but also because it is an infringement on academic freedom. The fact that the administration took the request to change the course seriously is quite shocking. It should be completely unheard of in a secular university. In summary, it has been my best semester ever, but how I will remember it and whether I will recommend the AUC will very much depend on how the AUC decides to treat its professor now and in the future.

My stay in Cairo was a controversial one, however, not due to the AUC. The course selection here is immerse, and instructors are both passionate and professional. Please, keep in mind, that visa application process might be confusing and exhausting as well.

One of the few universities in the Middle East that makes it relatively easy for Americans to apply for a single semester and get full transferrable credit - if you're interested in the region, definitely consider it! I've really valued my time here. My classes have been interesting, the campus is gorgeous, and the other students are super friendly and willing to help. Cairo is very fun city - there are always new things going on, and outlets for any type of person. Egypt is also a wonderful country, with a ton to see. I didn't realize how much I would want to travel within Egypt before coming here, but I've found one semester to be not nearly enough to check out everything I have wanted to do. The American University in Cairo offers a great opportunity to study and experience this beautiful country!

The best thing about coming to Egypt was the way I was able to adapt to a new culture and surrounding. This change allowed for me to grow both as a student and as a global citizen. Some professors were very understanding while others disregarded differences and treated all the students as one. Egypt as a country seems to be on the rise and there are several youth activities present allowing for new experiences to be had here in the coming years.

Coming from similar society in Egypt, I didn't expect any new transformation in my life. However, being in Egypt and doing my study abroad here for a semester changed my life in a lot of different ways. Personally, it made me understand better about the culture and the conflict that happen in the region. It is also really intriguing to experience that in every difference you encounter, in learning the others you will eventually learn about yourself. This is exactly what happened with my time here in Egypt.

I was extremely impressed with the diversity of courses available to me as an international student. I was able to direct enroll, so I had the opportunity to take courses that I wouldn't have at my home institution. I was able to learn a lot about Egyptian society, both classical and contemporary, which makes everyday life more exciting when you can understand and appreciate the things around you. The professors are extremely knowledgeable and really helped me engage in the course material- a lot of which I had never been exposed to prior to my semester here. The campus is absolutely beautiful, with palm trees and fountains at every turn. Excellent Faculty always prepared to assist you and provide guidance. Very good Arabic courses. The University is very big and contains many sport facilities such as a swimming pool, a running track, gyms, a basketball court and a soccer field.

Being a girl from a christian background, i was afraid of living in islamic country. Contrary, the AUC students and staff showed me love and care. Their support is incredible. i remember when i was searching for some staffs, i couldn't find them easily, a classmate voluntarily took me to where i can find them. In addition, people outside of the campus are friendly. They try to all they can to support foreigner people.

AUC offers an excellent opportunity for those who are looking for a fresh and exciting adventure, while receiving an excellent education. The faculty and staff extends unconditional support, and have made my stay here a wonderful experience. Not to mention that the campus is the most beautiful, especially during Spring and Summer when the flowers all over campus are in full bloom. The students at AUC are super friendly, and have made the transition here that more exciting! I love it here and will be so sad when I graduate! I stayed in AUC new campus, which is a little ways away from Downtown, but there are several buses offered to students that can get me to anywhere in Cairo! So much to see here and experience!

For four years, I knew I wanted to move to Cairo and go to this university, so I had really high expectations. It isn't everything I had hoped for, but I wasn't exactly disappointed. Before applying, my parents and I flew out just to see the university, I already had friends in the city and could understand some Arabic. These things definitely helped. The curriculum of AUC earns it its title as one of the best schools in the Middle East AND Africa. The professors are very helpful, course topics are unique, and the administration is quite competent--once enrolled. I had an issue with communication from the university prior to arriving on campus. There are frequent trips sponsored by the university to various locations around the country, and given all that is included, prices are extraordinarily reasonable. My biggest issue with the university is that beginning in 2008, they moved all classes from the campus in Tahrir Square (literally Wasat el-Balad or Center of the Country) to a satellite city about 40 minutes (or 90, depending on traffic) east of the old campus. New Cairo, as it is so creatively named, is an upper-class district with very little to do other than go to high-end shopping malls. Across the street from the uni, there is one with an H&M and a Starbucks. I did not move to the other side of the planet to go to H&M and Starbucks. New Cairo is famously disconnected from the "real Egypt" and thus international students do not get to see the country they came for. Rather, they get to see what is essentially a town in the United States where the majority of residents speak Arabic.

AUC has given me greater insight into who I am as a person and the potentials within me. My time at AUC has been fulfilling as well as challenging in a positive sense. I came to AUC with the intention of studying for my diploma and getting out of Egypt. Little did I know of the world of possibilities that lay ahead. The supportive faculty encouraged me to try my hands on as many new things as time and chance would allow. This prodded me to join some of the student associations and clubs on campus, something I wouldn’t usually do. The community projects, group presentations, workshops, seminars and other personal development programs for students have broadened my horizon beyond the lecture theater. The academics are topnotch, and the practicality of the curriculum means student get to solve real life problems. The flexibility of my program (Sustainable Development) has seen me signing up for independent studies and taking courses in engineering, psychology, entrepreneurship, and policy. My experience at AUC has thought me to believe in myself and to be a problem solver. This AUC experience will stay with me from now till time kisses eternity.

I honestly am enjoying my stay in Egypt and AUC very much. I was an undergraduate student here and now I am doing an MA too. I honestly could not bear to leave it. There is so much to do, so many professors I want to learn from and so many courses I really want to take. Even as an undergrad I wish I had the time and credits to take more undergraduate courses! There is no doubt that the AUC would be a great choice to study in. The programs' quality is gradually improving and the AUC has the potential to offer education that can compete with the finest schools across the globe.

I came to the AUC to do my master degree (human rights law) and I have no regrets about my decision! The university is great, both in its facilities and in the level of education. The facilities are more than sufficient for the relatively small number of students (about 6,000 in total), as the campus has several food courts, a large library, many computers and printers, well-equipped classrooms, etc. For relaxation, there are sport fields, a gym and even a swimming pool! The dormitories are very luxurious as well. I had the fortune of staying in the Faculty Housing, which is about a 5-minute walk from the New Cairo campus. It was probably the most comfortable, spacious and luxurious apartment that I have every stayed in. The quality of the education is also very good. In comparison to my bachelor degree, I found this program to be much more focused on critical thinking. Finally, the university organizes many field trips to places in Egypt, which is nice for international students. They can be a bit pricey, however. There are a few downsides as well, however. The quality of the education and the facilities come at a large price. This was not a problem for me as I received a fellowship which covered all my tuition and dormitory fees. Without such a fellowship, it would be very expensive. Also, there were some bureaucratic issues, especially in the first few weeks of the semester. For some, the university cannot be blamed (for example, the university needs to get visas for international students approved by the Egyptian government), but in other cases the process could have been streamlined. All in all, these downsides do not even come close to outweighing the upsides of studying at the AUC. Even if it is expensive to study and live here, there are plenty of scholarships and fellowships that you can apply for. I would recommend anyone who is interested in studying in Egypt, or in the Middle East in general, to come to the American University in Cairo!

AUC is good, full of opportunities for curious minds. I had my skepticisms when coming to Egypt for grad studies, but AUC provides the appropriate standard that could be obtained anywhere in the world. The location within Cairo is good, it is accessible from anywhere in the city. The learning environment is conducive, encouraging exploration and research. The staff and faculty are very helpful, and are ready to help willing students in their academic and career pursuits. As a grad student, I want to commend the AUC work/study programs, they provide an opportunity to learn new things, and make little cash for some basic needs. Just like in any society you will find the good, the bad and the ugly in Cairo and AUC as well. The good: AUC is a great place with lots of opportunities for the curious mind, the bad: language barrier within campus is still a nagging issue, the ugly: despite the many efforts of the University to enlighten students about people from outside Egypt, some students are still very ignorant. In all, its a good place!

I had the best experience as an exchange student in AUC. I absolutely loved my classes (i took anthropology and sociology) and the profs were quite qualified, although sometimes confused. Some gave us too much freedom, which was frustrating. but otherwise they are very knowledgeable and willing to help. I made so many friends through school activities and in the dorms. Dorm community is a very cozy environment, the campus is safe. Only negative was that the level of education is lower than in my home university, but that is only in your advantage if you desire good grades. Also the location of the campus in New Cairo is very inconvenient, because it is far from everything, and there's not much to do in New Cairo. There were visa issues with the international students. A lot of people complained about the system not being effective. Otherwise, amazing experience, amazing people, qualified staff. Overall, I am too sad to leave this place.

When I moved to Egypt, I was afraid from the first day of university and the people that I am going to meet. First, I have learned a lot of thinks that helps me to know the Egyptian culture. Also, I think when I moved to Egypt my grades are becoming better May be because of the good teaching techniques that helped me to know the weaknesses that I have and try to solve the problems.

I would recommend studying here. Amazing experience both culturally and socially. Program is good at submerging you in the language of Arabic. It's really hard being a girl in Egypt, though. You couldn't even order at a restaurant without a boy. I would recommend being prepared for this kind of thing.

I have loved my time in Cairo. AUC, where I attend, is the best university in Egypt, It is an awesome home-base in order to travel to other destinations throughout the Middle East. The other Egyptian students are extraordinarily friendly. I am very happy with my experience here in Cario, Zamalek to be more precise, and definitely suggest studying here.
