About Sibuya Wilderness Experience

Sibuya Wilderness Experience takes its commitment towards the game reserve and its inhabitants seriously. No matter how small or large, water or land based, animals are at the heart of everything we do, and we do our best to protect them and their natural habitat.

We are a team of passionate conservationists working steadfastly to save endangered and threatened wild and marine life from extinction. Our newly launched Eco Volunteering Conservation Program focuses an impactful rescue and anti-poaching scope for wildlife and a strong marine conservation aim. By exposing volunteers to our conservation work and nurturing in them our hands-on mentality, we know that we can make a difference.

Conservation, however, does not stop at conserving nature alone, but includes a responsibility to uplift local and impoverished communities. This responsibility includes environmental education of the community as to its role in and the benefits of conserving biodiversity and further stresses the importance of conserving natural resources.

We are firmly against any kind of interaction with wild animals and we strongly dissociate ourselves from sanctuaries, parks, or rehabilitation centers that encourage cub petting, lion walking, or interacting with elephants. These organizations mislead visitors to believe that they are promoting conservation when they keep wild animals in captivity and use them for commercial exploitation.

A once in a lifetime experience!!

I had the pleasure to volunteer at Sibuya for three weeks last november and I had the time of my life, a truly unforgettable experience I will treasure forever! It was the first time I travelled abroad on my own and I'm not going to lie, it was a bit overwhelming at first. But the team at Sibuya were so helpful throughout every step of the process and my entire stay there. The program was amazing with a large variety of activities with a great focus on wildlife conservation, community engagement and also discovering the beautiful region around Kenton-on-Sea. We were lucky enough to see wildlife everyday and experience the behind the scene with the rangers on a daily basis. For me, the people we had the chance to spend our time there with were a big part of our experience. Their knowledge about wildlife and passion for their work really is an inspiration and I thank them for their dedication and what they've shown us. Through this experience, I have gained more awareness about our biodiversity and the challenges it faces today, I have learned about a new culture and beautiful South Africa, and all that with amazing people that I get to call friends today! Trust me, this is the trip you were waiting for!

Life changing experience

I recently did the volunteer program for 4 weeks, it is a really great opportunity for anyone that is wanting to start a career working with wildlife or conservation. They don’t require any experience, so there is no need to feel nervous about applying. When you leave the program you will have acquired so much knowledge with the help of your guide, Luke. He is very knowledgeable of the area and patient with learners. When I went, I met so many extremely nice people whom I still keep in touch with today. So not only can you find your pathway in life, but you may also have life changing experiences and lifelong relationships. I highly recommend this program.

Amazing experience - with huge impact

I spend 2 weeks at Sibuya, an this is the minimum time I would recommend to stay there in order to get the full picture: You will be part of the team, get up early in the morning, work over the day, either in the bush, on the river, in the township, at the farm itself or at the beach. You get a rough schedule at the beginning of the week, which can be slightly adjusted during the week due to weather conditions or other unforeseeable events. You work in small teams (I think max 8 volunteers), which totally makes sense. You will learn a lot!!! Evenings and weekends are mostly leisure time. For me those 2 weeks were amazing!!!! I meet 3 exceptional engaged and passionate guys (Pablo, Shaun and Scott), who have huge knowledge about life´s natural cycle and everything which is connected. They are absolutely eager and pationed, sharing their knowledge. We worked on a variety of projects, from alien plant removal over animal tracking, digging water ditches, develop a vegi garden, supporting a township´s soup kitchen for pupils.....and the best thing is: you can actively be involved and see the progress. All the projects are quite impactful, sustainable and really make sense. When talking about Sibuya wilderness experience, I need to mention Intaka Bird Lodge. The accomodation for the volunteers is managed by the 2 most wonderful and heartwarming people: Retha and Paul. From the first second I felt like being part of the familiy. This time was a personal enrichment I would not like to miss for anything in the world. Thank you!!!
