Seamester Study Abroad at Sea

My biggest takeaway, besides the incredible places we visited and sailing, was how inspiring the staff was! I loved meeting new people and hearing about how their paths brought them to Sea|Mester!! It truly opened new pathways that I hadn't imagined, knowing that I could have those experiences too. I had the best time exploring different islands and learning so much about sailing a big boat! My biggest excitement was that every day was a new adventure. I learned so much in just a short amount of time and would highly recommend this program!! (Although my one regret is that I didn't do a longer trip!)

Living on Argo was the most incredible experience of my life, I absolutely loved my voyage with 30 of my favorite people! I sailed from Fiji to Palau on the 40 day voyage, and I loved every minute of it!

I have recommended the experience to everyone I know. My only regret is that I didn’t go longer. The staff before the trip and on board were so incredibly helpful. Overall I made friendships and memories to last a lifetime. I loved every moment!

I loved learning to sail on Vela, exploring every new place we sailed to like devils island with no inhabitants was pretty cool too. Meeting some of my new favourite people in the form of my crew was pretty sweet too. I’m going to miss it<3

Seamester was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but also the most rewarding. Living on a boat, sailing every day, and diving in some of the most incredible places in the world pushed me far outside my comfort zone and helped me grow so much as a person. The dives were unforgettable, the sailing taught me resilience and teamwork, and the people made it all worth it. I met some of my closest friends and made memories I’ll carry with me forever. It challenged me, changed me, and gave me experiences I never could have had anywhere else. I’m so grateful I did it.

I went into Seamester feeling excited, nervous and worried that my expectations were unrealistically high! I can not stress enough that I was so wrong, Seamester blew my mind, it was more incredible than I could ever have began to imagine. I can not recommend this program enough, you will experience once in a lifetime things and see incredible places. More than that you will learn, learn about the world the ocean and most importantly yourself. You will be challenged in the best way possible and truthfully flourish. I owe this program so much and would do it again in a heartbeat. Go in with a smile and an open mind and it will not disappoint.

Seamester was a last minute decision for me, kind of came out of nowhere. Best decision I could have made. I met 30 incredible people that I am happy to report are some of my closest friends now. This trip was so fun but also extremely difficult. I wouldn’t change my experience for the world though. Thank you Seamester.

What this trip gave me was unreplicatable experiences. I got to live on a boat for 90 days with like-minded individuals, and do things and go places that most people will never be able to. We crossed the Panama Canal, got to scuba dive in Galápagos, and had a special ceremony as we crossed the equator. We visited many remote islands that would be hard to get to otherwise. We sailed the Pacific, and went eighteen days without seeing land. And as we were doing it all, we studied marine biology and oceanography, learned what it meant to be a sailor, and how to be a leader. This is a once in a lifetime experience, and I’m grateful for every story I have brought home with me.

This trip definitely taught me a lot about myself- especially my limits. There was one person on my boat who left because he felt extremely homesick, uncomfortable, etc.. and so did I. The only difference between me and him was that I came on this trip to push myself- I definitely payed attention to the reviews and even warnings on the website that stated this trip isn't for the weak of heart. So, I stayed. I really struggled, though. I'm not the type of person to go on these types of things- ever. So, being said, I may have a different opinion about this trip than most students. Most people on the boat really loved it. Personally, I could deal with the work that we had to do, I knew it was necessary. I couldn't deal with the cockroaches. That was bad. I couldn't deal with the way staff handled some issues. That was bad. I wish there was more personal autonomy on this trip- being able to pick what you want to do for the day, even. I also wish there were more breaks. Almost everyone I know reached a point of complete mental exhaustion (which I know was expected). We were not asking at any point for a full day off- but maybe even just a 4 hour break once every 2-3 weeks. Besides that, this trip really was great. It taught me so much about myself and I have so much more confidence in who I am as a person, and what I can achieve. I genuinely feel like the sky is the limit. I met some lifelong friends and had experiences I will talk about until the day I die. Thanks Seamester!

i really enjoyed this trip overall. i've met some of the best people i've ever met in my life, who i will definitely stay in touch for a long time. it was nice to learn about the basics of sailing as well as getting to see so many different places but i wish we got to have more shore time and we didn't have to suffer in the heat because the captain didn't want to turn the gen on. i didn't like how the staff were more emotionally immature than the teens on the boat, i found it particularly unprofessional, how they would constantly project their anger on us and pick on one person for an unnecessary extended amount of time. i also felt like we did not have enough food and no one genuinely enjoyed their job.

The time I spent on this adventure is something I will never forget. I won't forget the amazing people and places we visited. no matter what I know I will hold this experience I won't forget, and there won't be another like it. I would 100% recommend this trip to anyone who is interested in adventure, trying new things, and being a part of a team. When I came across Seamester online, it just felt right from the beginning, and I knew it was something I wanted to do. Actually, going on the trip was even better and like coming home. A value of mine is living life to the fullest, enjoying the small things, and I want to live a life where at the end, I know I did everything and felt everything. I have never felt as alive and so at home as I did on Argo. It is hard to describe all the emotions I've felt over the past 90 days. I have never felt so close to people and myself as I did on Argo. I have learned to love people in a deeper way and gained a new appreciation for everything. I am extremely grateful for all the lifelong friendships made. I am proud of myself for taking the jump and who I've become through the experience. If you share any of the same interests and are considering doing a Seamester, I urge you to do it because it will change you in ways you can't even imagine.

Seamester was an amazing experience. It challenged me in so many ways including physically and mentally, and I grew so much as a person in several different ways. I loved seeing the world on a sailboat and it truely was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Seamester Bali to South Africa was an awesome way to study abroad. The classes can be difficult with little time to study and complete assignments. It is also easy to feel exhausted all the time due to lots of physical activity and no so much sleep, but that is all part of the fun. The classes are also everyday, including weekends, for the most part, which is weird at first but you get used to it. It is definitely a big lifestyle change, but as the trip goes on, you definitely adjust to it and enjoy it. You get super close with the friends you make here and don't want to leave at the end. Although it can be a lot of work, you learn so much. Amazing study abroad opportunity for anyone into sailing and diving.

This was one of the biggest challenges of my life. I learned skills and made memories that will stick with me for the rest of my life. I made lifelong friends during this shared adventure. This was the best thing I could have done for myself.

My Seamester trip changed my life. I was shocked to discover how much I love to sail, explore new places, and live on the ocean! I was really struggling to find something I’m passionate about, but since leaving Argo, I am actively chasing opportunities to work on a boat and continue living on the ocean. I met some of the best friends I’ll ever have, and I cannot imagine a world in which I never met them. The staff were so helpful, supportive, and incredibly caring. I immediately felt like we were all one large family. I cannot recommend this enough. There are hard parts, that’s for sure. I definitely had moments where I was just so exhausted, homesick, nervous, and stressed out. But the lessons I learned in those situations shaped me into a more confident and adventurous person, and I am so grateful for that. If you’re considering going on a Seamester trip, GO!! I highly recommend the Mediterranean to Caribbean trip, the places we went were remarkable and I wish I could go back in time and do it all over again. Seriously, it is worth every penny. I will always remember my trip and if someone else has even half the experience I had, I know they will absolutely love it.

I had a great time! I’d say the best thing to do is keep and open mind because you may find yourself doing stuff that’s not your favorite, but if you think of it with an open mind it will be super fun. I can also promise you will enjoy passage much more then you expect, it is one of the most fun things I’ve ever experienced and definitely a highlight of the trip.

I sailed with Sea|messter for 3 months from Fiji to Palau and Indonesia. I joined the boat with no sailing or scuba experience and ended up a rescue diver with multiple sailing certifications. All the staff and students were so friendly and the 22 strangers that I met on day one turned into a tight-knit family that was impossible to say goodbye to on day 80. The program is definitely challenging and will push you out of your comfort zone with long-passage and some rough nights but I now look back on those as some of my fondest memories. The boat transforms into a home with people who were put together by chance and now know some of the strangest stories about each other's lives. Nothing can ever beat the feeling of jumping off the boat to swim with manta rays just feet from our floating home or back-rolling off the dinghies to scuba dive across the equator or helming through 360-degree sunrises and sunsets in the middle of the ocean with some of your closest friends. This experience teaches you to be comfortable going outside your comfort zone and to always say yes, it may just turn into one of the best memories of your life.

Being on Seamester was such an amazing experience in so many ways. From learning how to scuba dive to being completely under sail for the first time, I was able to learn so many new things and fall in love with boat life. The community was one of the best parts of the trip. Since we all are with each other pretty much 24/7 it’s easy to create really close relationships. Overall, the trip was amazing, the only thing I wish that was different was that I chose a longer trip

Seamester was the adventure of a lifetime. I went into it not knowing how to sail but wanting to learn, and came out of it not only with that knowledge, but also with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me so many new things about myself. The staff members were amazing with their teaching and support, especially when times got rough. Their diligence ensured we all made it safely across the pacific. I also loved the places we visited, with my favorites being the Galapagos, Mo'orea, and the Panama Canal. The class schedule could be challenging at times, and waking up for watch in the middle of the night was definitely not my strong suit, but overall I had an amazing semester. I couldn't recommend Seamester enough and I'm so grateful for this wonderful experience.

I am so thankful for this once in a lifetime opportunity. This is something I will never forget and will always have this story to tell. However no one outside of this program will ever understand the true meaning because they did not experience it the same way I did. They were not there. I have attempted to explain the jokes or stories we told but very little people understood it like the crew on Argo did. The staff and students were the nicest people I have ever met, I know I made lifelong friends. From swimming with manta rays to midnight watch during a long passage, to cleaning the boat and making her sparkle. We made every moment fun. We always turned something that the staff told us wasn't going to be that fun (for example boat appreciation or clean up after meals) into dance parties. There was never a dull moment.

This trip has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience and something I will never forget. I have made so many lifelong friends that I will continue to keep in touch with and see again. Sea|Mester is the greatest thing I have ever done. It opened my eyes in so many different ways and has made me change in so many great ways. I made many great memories I will cherish forever. All the staff was incredibly kind and made sure all of my needs were taken care of. I could talk to the staff about anything and always had fun talking with them. The staff treated us as equals which was super nice. All the classes were taught very well and every teacher was very passionate about their course. For me, the most valuable aspect was the social factor. I was pretty nervous coming into this trip about meeting new people and broadening my social circles. I have always been anxious about introductions and showing people my true self and this trip helped me so much. This trip allowed me to be myself and unlock a part of me I didn’t know I had. Everyone embraced me for who I was, which was great. I owe a great deal of this trip to my fellow crew members who were so kind and funny. Sea|Mester is awesome. Don’t change anything. This trip is probably the greatest thing I’ve ever done and I’ll remember it forever. I have lifelong friends all over the world now.

If you’re a student thinking of doing Seamester, I cannot tell you enough…DO IT! Going on this voyage has absolutely changed my life. Not only did I get to cross an ocean, see the world, scuba dive, and meet the most incredible people, but I also left the boat a more confident, competent, and better version of myself. The academics are rigorous but reasonable, and I loved learning about the ocean in the most hands-on possible environment. I cannot recommend Seamester enough and will never forget each special memory from my time aboard Vela!

I had a wonderful time studying with SeaMester aboard Vela on the 2024 South Africa to Caribbean trip. I was consistently impressed with the organization of the trip, as well as the support from the office and staff onboard. This particular voyage had a lot of time sailing in blue water, which created a close environment between the students and allowed us to focus on school during the first half of the trip. By the time we got to the Caribbean we were able to focus intensely on diving and exploring the various islands with people we had already crossed an ocean with. I particularly enjoyed the leadership class, as it tied the emotional side of the trip together as well as taught us how to be better people in general.

Being a student on Sea|Mester was the most incredible experience of my life. I did the South Africa to Antigua voyage on Vela, and it exceeded any and all expectations I could have possibly had. I got to visit places that I never thought I would get to go. I met people that started out as strangers, but quickly became family to me. Prior to Sea|Mester, I had very little sailing experience and no diving experience and I think that that is a common turn off for people that come across this program, but you have no need to be worried if you're in that boat (haha). The staff does an exceptional job teaching you the ropes, making you feel safe, and making you feel like the boat is your home. If you're a hands on learning that thrives on getting outside of your comfort zone, adventure, and travel then this program is for you. I can not effusive enough how much Sea|Mester and my crew changed my life. If you're presented with the privilege to be a student on Sea|Mester... do it. If Sea|Mester taught me anything, it's to say yes even when you're scared. The greatest adventure of your life could be waiting for you.

loved it. The challenges that brought people together and helped me grow as a person, the sheer beauty and thrill of sailing across an ocean, all the stops along the way, and the list goes on and on. The staff were super super super incredible and I wish that everyone had the opportunity to do something this awesome and fun. Thanks for the best summer ever. I did actionquest two years before and I knew the GXG was an awesome group. I would recommend taking some stuff off the packing list because I did overpack. That might’ve just been me though. Loved the food and even though they warned us we would get tired of pasta, I never did. All the staff was awesome. They always cared selflessly and made the trip so much fun. They always made sure to put us before themselves and even though I would’ve been tired of dealing with us by the end, they were always energetic, smiling, and positive. I was able to grow as a person and socialize better. This trip was awesome.

The hardest question after returning from this trip is "What was your favorite part?". The only answer is EVERYTHING. Everyday on Ocean Star is absolutely incredible and just when you think you've seen it all it only gets better! Living onboard with your fellow students, you will get to experience the trip as a working member of the crew. That's right, This is NOT a cruise ship. Be prepared for dance parties while cooking in the galley, cleaning the saloon and heads, and getting your hands dirty hauling lines and flaking the anchor chain. Within 3 days, every person on the boat will feel like family and by the end you will have up to 15 lifelong friends. The Seamester staff are AMAZING! They care so much about every student and want to see each person thrive. They provide top of the line medical care and good medical facilities were easily accessible everywhere we went (speaking from personal injury experience). If you, or your parents, are concerned about storms, they closely monitor the weather and will alter the course or the schedule if necessary to make sure the conditions are safe. I came into this program with next to no sailing or diving experience (as did the majority of the students on my trip) and I never felt behind at all. We started with basic sailing 101 for everyone and slowly built our skills from there. In a few short weeks, you'll have a brand new boat vocabulary and be confident enough to take the helm on passage! The 80 days I spent on Ocean Star were some of the best days of my life! We went horseback riding on the beach in Nevis, toured a chocolate factory in Grenada, found the geckos on Union Island, visited a mud bath in St. Lucia, went canyoning in Guadeloupe, dove with reef sharks in Saba, and so much more! This experience was better than I could have ever dreamed. If you are adventurous, hard working, open minded and up for any challenge, then this program is for you. Apply! I promise you will regret it if you don't!

I took a gap year after high school and chose to spend my Fall onboard S/Y Argo and sail from Palau, through Indonesia, to Bangkok Thailand. I had some scuba diving experience, but had never even been aboard a sailboat before. The Seamester staff was supportive and amazing. I made some of my strongest friendships and had the most amazing experiences, from diving with oceanic manta rays to long night watches sailing through the rough South China Seas. I learned so much about diving, sailing, and marine sciences, as well as so much about myself as a person. I would recommend Seamester to anyone considering it!

I did the trip from Palau to Thailand in 21 and it was so much fun. I learnt so much, made so many great friends and got to see and experience some of the coolest stuff I’ve seen to date. The staff are all very cool, approachable and great teachers. I got 12 credits and it didn’t even feel like a semester because it was so fun. If you like adventure, travel and the ocean I couldn’t recommend this program more.

This has been the most amazing trip of my life just now finishing up and cannot believe the experience I have gained from traveling. The traveling, sailing, academics all of it as a whole is something I will never forget for the rest of my life. From traveling the streets of Rome to diving the blue waters of Dominica nothing compares to a trip of this caliber. The academics have been great especially seeing the things you learn about in class as we are diving or sailing is amazing. Straight from classroom to using the skills or topics in the real world. 10/10 would do this trip again and wish it would never end.

Seamester was definitely one of the best experiences of my life! This is not a luxurious sailing program (there’s no crew to sail you from place to place or cook for you), but that makes it so much better. Learning to sail while actually living on a boat was amazing. You can look forward to swimming in the ocean every day, getting really close with your fellow crew, and making so many cool memories!!

Seamester was a trip that exceeded all of my expectations. I had an opportunity to visit places some people may never see in a lifetime and I got to make countless memories with amazing new people. I grew a bond with not only the students but also the staff that could never be replaced. Everyday I wish I could go back and relive it all just once more.

There are no words to describe the multitude of experiences I had as a crewmember of Vela. A 23-day Pacific Ocean Crossing (right after the once-in-a-lifetime adventure of going through the Panama Canal) is a trip I will never forget. Waking up in the middle of the night for watch, with a team of eight other newly made best friends is such a unique experience. Nothing could have prepared me for the beautiful stars I saw out in the middle of the ocean, and the amazing bonds I made with my peers and staff!

This was an incredible experience, starting from enrolling in the program until the very last day of the trip. The support while preparing for this adventure could not have been better. The Global Expedition Group staff was absolutely amazing and answered all my questions very quickly and were very flexible. I realized how closely they followed us during the trip and how hard they worked to make everything happen as smoothly as possible when we had to turn back during the trip due to the broken propeller (oups). I still remember the day I arrived on board as if it was yesterday. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I soon realized that I wasn't alone in this. The group soon became like a second family to me. We followed and supported each other through this adventure until we became our own little community in the middle of the ocean. We learned to appreciate waking up at midnight for our watch under the stars. We learned the rope, the sailing, the hard work that sailors seem to enjoy so much. We adapted to new situations and surprises. I would say, one of my highlight of this amazing adventure was caused by an unforeseeable event: we had to turn back because our propeller broke while underway to the Galapagos. The sailing that followed was challenging, yet amazing. This whole situation made our group stronger. We manage our way to the Galapagos with a few days delay, but I wouldn't change any of the trip. If this trip have learned me one thing, it would be that the best things come from the unplanned situations. To make it short, this whole trip was absolutely incredible. From day 1 to day 90, strangers became family, the new crew of Vela. Through our busy days, we made friends that challenges brought closer. We swam with dolphins, turtles and sea lions. We came up after every dive with a broad smile and new stories to tell. Diving and sailing in different places, countries and oceans opened up our eyes on this unique world of ours. Our staffs was the heart of the crew and worked with us to make Vela our home. She still is part of me and will always be. We didn't even see the last day come by, and in a matter of hours filled with laughter and crying, we say our goodbyes to Vela and the crew, hearts full of unforgettable memories.

I took this trip on S/Y Vela in the Spring of 2023. From the minute I arrived in Antigua and got settled onto the boat, I immediately started having the best time of my life. From the experience of living on a boat, to shore excursions and being underway, I have genuinely never felt happier and more like myself. I learned so many valuable things from Marine Biology, to seamanship, the skills and attributes this program teaches you are unlike any you can find elsewhere. I highly recommend this program to everyone who wants to see the world, make a life long group of friends, and push themselves beyond their limits.

I came aboard S/Y Argo in Cape Town, SA, with very little sailing experience and having never taken any university-level courses before. The crew was very welcoming and within a few days, I had become acquainted with all of my fellow students. I found that the professors were very understanding and really just wanted to help grow students' passions for the ocean. The night watches were always a solid time, a positive mindset is encouraged lol. I participated in the PSCT (professional skipper and crew training) course, on top of the 12 credits, I thought the workload at some times was a lot, but still manageable. It was great to hear from our skipper and program manager about how they came to becoming yachtmasters through IYT and RYA. I made friendships that I hope will last a lifetime, got to surf some at some of the best beaches in the world (Fernando De Noronha, Brasil), swim with whalesharks (!!!) next to the island with Napolean's grave, race in a regatta, and just do so much exploring on land and in the ocean!

My time aboard the S/Y was an extremely rewarding experience and I think more people my age could benefit from this program. We had an incredible staff who were all super knowledgeable and passionate. They went above and beyond to help students learn and grow. All the staff members truly had an incredible impact on me. I always trusted them and knew that they had our best interests in mind. They helped me through personal, academic, and medical issues with grace and care. Our whole group, staff and students, worked really well together and I’m most thankful for the people I met. Program-wise, I think living on a boat and being an active crew member was the most impactful part. I wouldn’t feel half as accomplished if I didn’t spend hours in the pouring rain in the middle of the night or spend 3 days puking in a bucket. Being grimy and working hard gave me a purpose and I think that is most valuable. It was tough at times, but the accomplishment of getting to new places and being able to swim and explore with your best friends was incredibly worth it. This trip changed me for the better and now I'm working on getting back on the Seamester boats as a staff member, so that I can inspire college kids the way I was.

This was the best experience of my life truly once in a lifetime adventure! This voyage helped me discover who I was am while putting me in a challenging environment. I made the best of friends and will never be the same. Thank you so much seamester!

This experience completely altered the course of my life. I have learned so much from my fellow students and staff and therefore can without a doubt say that this was the best decision I have ever made for myself. My new perspectives and outlook on life are indescribable, and I hardly recognize my old self. My favorite memories are the little moments: a private laugh across the cockpit, staying up with another watch team an extra 30 minutes, skipping through clouds on top of a mountain, a giant stride, a smile, a hug, a squeeze. Throw yourself fully into this experience because it is only what you make it. It's crazy what happens when you let go and surrender yourself to everything and everyone around you, and what better place than the ocean!

It was the best thing i’ve ever done in my entire life. This trip is a serious blessing, I miss it more than anything in my entire life, I am extremely lucky. The relationships i were able to create, the things i got to see, the things i learned that I love so much. It was great

Every day was different from the last and the constant adventure is something I will never forget! The students and staff onboard were all fantastic and I made some of the best friends ever in such a short period of time. I wish I had done the 90-day voyage but I think even after that I would be wanting more.

This trip pushed me to try so many amazing new things with some great people. Meeting a wonderful group of like-minded individuals was so inspiring and refreshing. Even since I've been back home, this trip has left a lasting impression on me. I feel more like myself than I have since the beginning of the pandemic. The staff was incredible and really helped us get the most out of the trip. I've made long-lasting friendships and discovered so many new things!

Seamester provided me with the best 3 weeks of my life. From the moment I stepped aboard I felt an instant connection to my crew and the staff. Throughout the 3 weeks aboard I gained a new family that I will never forget. Together we sailed to foreign shores, dove to immense depths, laughed, sang, learned and created memories a of a lifetime. The staff were incredible and knowledgeable. The places you go are nothing short of amazing, but the people you meet and the things you learn are truly the most amazing part of this experience. This trip has immensely changed my life, and while right now I am not floating in the ocean, this program has taught me to accept the uniqueness in life and to never stop seeking adventure.

It was a really great program and I got to have so many new experiences and everyone got along so well. I definitely think you have to be a specific type of person to go on this trip, you have to be very adaptable and open to new sometimes nerve racking experiences. The staff of the ocean star were amazing leaders, super interested in helping us and teaching all the new skills while also joining in on our shenanigans from time to time :) I will miss them all very much. I think the friendships made were the most valuable aspect, everyone was so supportive and protective of one another and got along so incredibly well, we all loved each other a lot after only 20 days.

I had the time of my life! What made my best time was the diversity of experiences and learnings we made and the balance between academic classes, diving, sailing, on-shore activities, free time with the crew.

This experience was one of the most amazing things I have ever done. I wish that everyone would have the opportunity to do something like this, because it not only sparked my interest in pursuing a career at sea but it also gave me a sense of being able to face anything coming my way with confidence. The staff on my trip were amazing and made me feel safe and cared for. The friends I made on this trip are now some of my closest. Overall, this experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and I feel so much stronger and well prepared for all that life can throw my way!

If you have the chance to go aboard with Sea|Mester, take it! I promise you won’t regret it. Yes, you may be worried since the whole idea of sailing is new and you won’t know anyone going into it, but I promise it will be the best experience of your life. Hands down, Sea|Mester is probably the best thing I have ever done. Learning to sail was a blast. I saw so many cool things scuba diving. Exploring the beautiful islands was incredible. The staff were amazing. I made friends of a lifetime. Like I said, if you have the chance, take it! You wont regret it. I wish I could do this experience over again. Almost made me want to switch from being a doctor to working as staff on one of the boats. That’s how awesome it was!

I came upon this trip due to an interest in marine biology and diving. Even if I did not have these interests I still would highly recommend going on this voyage. It was honestly the best time of my life and I met people that I will be friends with for the rest of my life. Whether it was an awesome hike or a great dive, there was never a dull moment. You will be busy, but it is a good type of busy especially when you get to hang out everyday with awesome people and staff. Got to get my rescue diving certification which is also sick and nav master license. The classes are not bad either and the staff do a great job at making them interesting. Overall, I would love to do this trip again and will do my best to make it back on a vessel like Ocean Star in the future.

My seamester voyage was remarkable. Every day brought new adventures, challenges, and opportunities to learn. I remember thinking “I could describe any day on Ocean Star to someone at home and it would seem like an adventure.” Part of the joy of the trip, maybe counterintuitively, came from having to work hard to maintain the boat, build relationships and a positive culture aboard, and meet my own personal needs in a wholly new environment. I went to bed every night tired but satisfied, and I came out of the experience proud of what I had accomplished. I made life long friends on my voyage, including the Seamester staff, who inspire me and motivate me. I wouldn’t trade my experience for anything.

Best think I have ever done in my life I have learned so many new things the people the places the school it was all so amazing. From waking up in the morning to 25 other random people from around the world with the biggest smiles on their faces was so awesome. This made me realize what I want to do with my life and it was the best thing I’ve ever done

This was the best thing that I have ever done in my life opened my eyes to a whole new world that I am obsessed with now. I would do anything to go back right now. From the lifestyle of waking up early morning yo a boat filled with smiles to the long passages going crazy together I miss this lifestyle. If you do this trip you will not regret it at all This made me switch up the way I lived it showed me to appreciate everything so much more. From my mindset to my new unrest this trip really changed my life I love everything that we did with the trip. I love every single person I met and we all still talk just about everyday. This creates connections with people from all around the world Best thing in my life so far hopefully I’m coming back to work for you guys :)

I truly enjoyed my experience. The group of students I was with were caring, kind, and thoughtful of one another. The staff was incredible. Their devotion and commitment to the program and to their students is really commendable. I take my hat off to the staff who worked tirelessly to run this program, and who met the countless challenges posed before them with incredible problem solving and the most uplifting energy. I had the privilege of attending Sea|mester in Spring 2019 for the Antigua Yacht Regatta voyage on S/Y Ocean Star. I am now a graduating senior and recently was accepted into graduate school to study great white sharks-a dream of mine for many years. During the time I was at sea exploring the Caribbean, learning to sail, and becoming a Divemaster, I wrote a collection of personal essays, interweaving the area’s biology and ecology with personal introspection about how these ideas related to my growth, and I watercolored scientific illustrations of fish and invertebrates which resulted in winning my college’s Outstanding Honors Thesis Award. My time on Ocean Star was instrumental to my achievements. Onboard, I gained confidence in myself and my passions, and came away knowing that the ocean was what I wanted to devote my life to and that I had the ability to make a difference. So thank you, Sea|mester. Thank you for giving me, along with every other student who gets to be involved in this program, opportunities that can change lives. 

For a while I was nervous about voyage but quickly realized that everyone was in the same position as me. The community that was built on this trip was enough to make it all worth it. We visited some of the most unique and beautiful places i've ever been to and it enabled me to see a new part of the world.

I had an amazing time sailing around the Caribbean and getting sailing and scuba diving certifications! I would not have been able to do everything at home or without the encouragement and patience of the amazing staff.

Everything was perfect ! From the staff helping me prepare for my voyage on S/Y Ocean Star, to the crew for being so amazing. I made some of the best memories of my life during seamester. Some things I'll never forget include deep diving in Saba, small boat sailing, exploring the islands as well as countless others !

I had amazing journey on Ocean Star through the Caribbean that I will never forget. The sights you see are just incredible and won’t stop reminiscing over. Everyday brings new challenges and adventures that will push you to better yourself.

Semester is truly an amazing program created by amazing people who know that adventure, getting out of your comfort zone, and living with 15 or more strangers for 20 or more days will develop you into an amazing human. That is the experience I had on Ocean Star with 15 people for 20 days. The program challenges you and bonds you in ways you can’t imagine. The benefit or getting to know each and every crew member by the daily “squeeze” ritual after dinner was one of my favorite memories. The learning experience of exploring new places, plus reality of how vital our oceans health is to society was something I’ll never forget and walking away from a voyage inspired to change this world we live in. I am forever grateful to the staff of Seamester. I highly recommend seamester to every individual and to do whatever it takes to get on that ship. You will not regret it!

This trip will stay with me for the rest of my life. I made friends that I know I will never lose. I had adventures that can be told again and again. I saw parts of the world that I didn’t even know existed. I learned facts that impress my family. I can’t even put into words how much I enjoyed this experience. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

I applied for this trip because I love sailing and I wanted an abroad experience that would allow myself to see as many beautiful places as possible. What I did not realize is that my fellow crew members would become my second family. From the very first time we were underway to the last, everyone was always looking out for one another to ensure their safety and to make sure we all had the best experience possible. Learning outside of a typical classroom was one of the best aspects about this program, while underwater learning was absolutely incredible. For me, I didn't think I was going to love SCUBA diving as much as I did, and now I can go diving whenever I want. Sailing under the stars, through beautiful sunrises and sunsets, and rainstorms were all what made this adventure so much fun. Waking up in a new country with a sense of adventure and excitement almost every day is something I am truly going to miss. Letting go of the rest of society, only worrying about yourself and shipmates, and living on the little island of Argo is an unforgettable experience.

This trip was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. When I tell people about it, it’s hard to because you’re forced to use a few words to describe something great. I went and saw the world differently from the actual tourist perspective. Also, I was with people that probably cared as much or even a little more about my general welfare than my folks back home. Great experience all around.

How can I even put into words the mind-bending experience I just finished? Even if I tried, I couldn't capture the beauty of the places we visited, or the kindness of the people we met, on and off the boat. I naturally felt nervous about stepping into the wide unknown, but my fear of danger and discomfort proved unfounded. While we had some very adventurous days, I never felt out of my depth or as if I were teetering on the edge of death. Everyone on the boat took care of us and made it an unforgettable experience. Like I said, there are no words.

The Sea|Mester program is truly a one of a kind experience. Students sail to a variety of destinations getting to explore each location with some of your new found best friends. From day one, everyone, students and staff alike, are so kind and energized for the voyage ahead. Everyone becomes friends with each other so fast and the relationships only strengthen as you explore, live, sleep and learn with each other for the duration of the semester. Sea|mester could not be more correct when they claim that “there is no room for passengers on our vessels, only crew members.” This is what I loved about the program because each and every student is vital to the success of the crew and plays an active role in operating the vessel. On the first passage students were already trusted with the helm. By day 30 students were completely self dependent and capable of leading a sail raise. The level of trust granted by the staff was more than I could have ever expected. I would strongly recommend this program to anyone who might be interested. There is truly no experience required as everything taught onboard starts with the basics so anyone, of any background, can be just as involved as the rest.

If you are considering Sea|mester: do it. I could not recommend this program enough—they offer so much, and you finish the program having grown and feeling accomplished. Not only do you get to stop in multiple countries and go abroad, you also take classes and get college credit, learn to scuba dive, sail, make life-long friendships that are genuine, meet new people and make honest connections, challenge yourself in many ways, and more. I knew I would like it, but I never knew how much I would grow to love life living and learning on a boat. The staff is amazing and supportive, and all of your fellow crew make you feel at ease and at home. Meals are excellent and fun to cook. Overall, it is a one-in-a-lifetime experience that you don't want to pass up.

Seamester gave me an amazing opportunity, not only to travel internationally but also to gain sailing experience. I greatly enjoyed each place that we visited and getting to sail Argo made the passages between destinations enjoyable as well. The classes offered were engaging and the environment they were taught in allowed us to see many of the concepts that we learned about in the classroom first hand. All of the crew were all very knowledgeable and were always happy to help whenever I had a question. The ship was a pleasure to sail and I fell in love with her almost immediately.

Seamester gave me the opportunity to travel the world, learn to sail, and meet new amazing people. This program is one of a kind and there is nothing else out there like it. The sense of accomplishment when you cross an ocean, the excitement of every new destination you go to, the amazing diving, the interactive classes, the learning and discovering of yourself, are examples of things you get only from Seamester. The Captain and staff were always on top of everything, always putting our safety first. I am so thankful for this program and the opportunities it gave me, I would never trade my time on Argo for anything else.

This past summer I had an amazing opportunity to set sail on Seamester for 20 days. From the moment I stepped on board to the moment I disembarked, I was all smiles. Every day was a new adventure, full of incredible new opportunities. While becoming Scuba certified we were fortunate it enough to dive at some of the most breathtaking dive sites. Part of the Semester experience included becoming part of the crew. Without my fellow students and amazing staff, my experience would not have been the same. Everyone was helpful and incredibly friendly. The staff did a great job providing us with the knowledge we needed in order to set sail. While sailing isn't always easy, it is one of the most rewarding feelings seeing the sails set. Each destination was full of exploration and new knowledge of each place. As I look back on my semester experience I am appreciative and grateful for the experience and the lifelong friends I have made along the way.

The 20-day trip was the highlight of my year. From jumping off the bow to studying for seamanship class, there was never a moment where I was not happy. I made lifelong friends, had incredible adventures, and learned about the ocean and sailing. The crew was amazing and were a large part in making this trip so incredible.

Earlier this summer I went on a 20 day sailing trip from the BVI's down to Antigua, island hopping the whole way. It was such an amazing experience. I made great friends, saw incredible sights, learned how to sail a boat (not something I saw myself doing), and scuba diving. There was a really nice balance between work time and free time. Everyone on the boat was super nice and accommodating. If you are looking for a once in a lifetime way to spend your summer, go with Sea Mester.

This summer I spent 40 days crossing the Atlantic ocean with some of the most amazing people I have ever met. The passion and energy that the Sea|Mester crew brought to S/Y Argo is what made my trip so special. I highly recommend any Sea|Mester program to anyone who loves to explore, sail, or wants to push themselves to do something simply extraordinary.

My trip with Seamester exceeded my expectations in ways I didn't even think were possible. I got to visit some of the most beautiful, isolated places in the world with incredible people who became my best friends. By the end of the trip we all agreed that where we were going never mattered as much as the fact that we were getting to do it with each other. The staff are incredible and always encouraged us to push ourselves and kept morale high. I really can't put into words how important this trip was to me. If you're on the fence about it, go for it, I know 100% you won't regret it.

I said across the Atlantic on a 112ft schooner with 32 other people who were so kind hearted, funny, and loving. If I could do it all over again I would! Some of the amazing things we’ve done together was swam with a whale shark, hiked table top mountain, swam across the equator, and grew as a family! There isn’t another group of people I’d want to do it again with.

I was on board Sea|mester's 112 ft schooner Argo for the Spring 2018 voyage from South Africa to Antigua. It was the highlight of my gap year, and certainly one of the best experiences I've ever had. The team of instructors were all knowledgeable and fun to be around throughout the trip and my fellow shipmates became close friends. If you are looking for a challenging, life-changing adventure and love the ocean I would highly recommend Sea|mester.

A very exciting adventure. We faced many things and grew very close as a crew and family. Explored many places and did things that not very many people get to do. From exploring different places, to scuba diving, to sailing across oceans, you can do it all on Seamester.

Being a part of the Seamester crew this summer was one of best experiences I've ever had. Not only did I learn practical sailing and diving skills, but also what it means to be a part of a crew with all different backgrounds and interests. Seamester challenged me to be a better person, as well as taught me how to live in simplicity amongst the most gorgeous sights I've ever seen. There's something different about visiting different countries from the ocean, and Seamester's delivery of this was superb. I made some of my best friends while on my trip, and I am forever thankful. I'd pay triple to do it all over again. I couldn't recommend this trip more highly if I tried. The Seamester environment is challenging, fruitful, loving, energetic, and SO fun. Make every moment count because before you know it, it's gone!

This trip was the best summer of my life, the experience of living on a 112 foot boat sailing from island to island with 30 other people who thought the trip become people you cant imagine living without having met is life changing. From scuba diving, to sailing at night, to having class snorkeling in the ocean i have had so many unique experiences that i will always treasure.

I cannot recommend this program enough. You get to travel to amazing places on a real sailing vessel, learn interesting subjects taught by fantastic staff, and spend a semester with people that will become your second family. Truly incredible experience!

When I first arrived to begin my 20 day journey, I was absolutely terrified.. but I immediately made friends. The staff, Eric, Cooper, Marina, and Bobbie were absolutely incredible and professional. The four of them constantly had great attitudes and were ready to help you and teach you whenever you needed it. I loved exploring all of the islands, just wish we would have had more time to explore them! Nevis, Antigua, St. Barts and Saba were all extremely different but I loved them all, but St. Barts had to be my favorite! I have already told so many people that they need to go on one of these trips, especially one longer than the 20 day... it went by way to fast!! I wish I could go on another trip and see all of my crew including the staff again, all in all it was the most amazing experience! Thank you to the staff for making this trip so amazing!!!

Seamester can easily become the best experience of my life. But the important message I learned from the trip was to not let that happen. I am very grateful for how adventurous this program is. You don't expect a comfy and luxurious yacht life. But there will be no regret in the end for sure. Lots of amazing friends, lots of skills learned, not to mention all those awesome diving sites, memorable hikes, and our incredibly elegant home, Ocean Star.

Sea|Mester is a life changing opportunity. It took me to places I had never been (literally and figuratively) and had me contemplating ideas I had never considered before. I learned so much through the classes, the work on deck, the places we visited and the people I met. I came to see the world, and the ocean, differently than I had before, and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to do so. If you are considering doing Sea|Mester I encourage you to do so because the experience is utterly unique and indescribable. If you're willing to work hard, which is honestly the best part, do this because it is an adventure that will stay with you forever.

I stumbled upon Seamester not knowing what to expect as I boarded Argo to sail from Tahiti to Australia. I’m fortunate to have family that signed me up for this trip and pretty much forced me to go. I am not required to write this review but have never had a better experience in my life and therefore feel compelled to. We saw humpback whales swim along our schooner. We dove the Great Barrier Reef. We danced in small island bars across the South Pacific, and best of all we formed a bond as a crew that will never be broken. These memories were etched into our minds to be cherished for a lifetime. These are things I never thought I would do and it brings tears to my eyes to think I almost missed out on these experiences, these people. Don’t hesitate like I did. Sign up now and take the first step towards something you will never regret.

There are honestly no words to truly describe how incredible this program really is. 20 Days are not enough but in span of those 20 days this trip will change your life. Yes you learn a lot and get college credits, but what really blows you away is just the experience of being a sailor and living on a boat and waking up every morning to the Caribbean Sea. The staff was beyond incredible, the community you build will connect on a much deeper level than you have before, and overall this trip will open your eyes to a lifetime of adventures. I am beyond thankful and would recommend this to everyone. You won't get to experience this anywhere else

I just got home from the 20 day Carribbean voyage, and all I can say is that it was not enough time! Being from Colorado, I don't get to experience the luxuries of the ocean as much as I would like, and Seamester was the perfect program that allowed me to gain my sea legs. That isn't the only thing I've received from this program for I've also added dives to my dive log, experienced different cultures, learned how to sail, and most importantly, met new friends from all over. After Seamester, I felt so happy to have met new friends and gone to new locations, it has made me realized the life that exists beyond university and outside my comfort zone. Seamester, Ocean Star, my crew, and the awesome staff have provided the highlight of my summer, allowed me to grow, and experience a unique adventure.

This is a phenomenal program. If you want a study abroad program that goes above and beyond and pushes you to the edge of your experiences this is for you. From day 1 to day 80 you are constantly learning about the new environment you live in and how to work in it with your fellow students. You learn how to SCUBA dive and sail as well as classes and you get to visit more countries that you can imagine. If you want a nontraditional program Sea|Mester is for you. Living on a schooner isn't easy, be prepared for night watches and long days of hard work but lots of fun. Its an indescribable once in a lifetime experiences and I highly recommend it.

The 80 day I spent aboard Ocean Star where the best 80 days of my life. Not only did I get to travel around the Caribbean and see some amazing things. But I now have a new family that will be apart of the rest of my life. Sea|Mester helped me grow as a student, adventurer, and overall person. No day is the same at sea, everyday comes with new islands, new activities, and new experiences. Everything that is being taught in the classroom can directly be applied in everyday life around you. I would go again in a heartbeat and would not trade my experiences for the world.

Incredible sights, amazing people, treasured memories. The things I saw, learned, and experienced were priceless. Seamester is a special program that truly cares about its students. Great fun was had and the islands you visit and people you meet will be with you for the rest of your life. Would do it again in a heart beat.

Going on Seamester was the best decision I've ever made. I cannot even describe everything that I learned and experienced. My two older brothers also went on this trip before me and my whole family loves this program. (3/3 loved it!)

Everyone wants you to be able to explain a trip like Seamester, but what makes it unique is how indescribable the entire experience is. That are moments that only you and a handful of people will ever really understand, but the lesson learned and the feelings stay with you and transfer into everyday life.

This was one of the most formative and incredible experiences of my life. The 90 days I spent aboard S/Y Argo sailing around the Caribbean in the spring of 2016 were some of the best of my life. I would not have given up the time I had for anything in the world. In addition, I learned a lot, both about myself and in the Oceanography, Ship Handling, Student Leadership and the Marine Biology classes. I would like to thank Sea|mester for the opportunity to meet some of my now closest friends and see places that I had never thought I would have a chance to see.

If you have the time and chance, definitely consider Seamester. I was on the 90-day Caribbean trip on the 112 -foot Argo (HEY OSCAR), and I have to say my time on board will definitely be one of the highlights of my life. If all you want to do is party, then please do not sign up, as you will be miserably tired and wet. However, if you actually want to get closer to the ocean rather than stay in an insulated hotel cabin, I believe Seamester is a superior option to other similar programs such as Semester at Sea (which I believe is on a cruise ship). There will definitely be times when living in close quarters with 20+ stinky people will get on your nerves, but if you grit your teeth and hold your tongue, you will find riches in friendship and the chance to behold on a daily basis a beauty that other people might only see once or twice in a lifetime (like sunsets and dolphins). Additionally, you will also get a chance to know your teachers as actual human beings and be inspired by their lives (an extra highlight for me, as my trip had incredible staff members). Just pack well, and get plenty of sleep beforehand, as God knows that when you start this program, you won't. Basic Score Breakdown: ADVENTURE: Full 10. Self-explanatory: what else can you describe a journey of 4,300 miles? LIVING SPACE: 8. Bit cramped, and can be hot at times. Still, you didn't sign up for 5-star hotel accommodations, did you? CULTURAL IMMERSION: With island skipping, unfortunately, you don't get much of a chance to really get into the native Creole culture. However, the sailing community is very tight knit, and Seamester really gives you the chance to break into that group of slightly weird, terribly sun-burned people. (I'll say it again: my favorite part of the whole trip was meeting incredible people, some of who were my teachers, some of who where fellow students). PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION: I'd say this is the weakest part. The trip was very good, but sometimes the red-tape can be incredible, some due to complex legal problems over your head, others because of the nature of sea life. If you just keep your head down and power through however, things will be fine. Just be warned that you'll have to exercise your bull***t shoveling muscles. HEALTH AND SAFETY: Helicopter parents, be soothed. This program is as safe as can possibly be on the sea. We observed full safety procedures at all times. SOCIAL LIFE: A definite hit and miss at times. It mostly depends on your luck and the group you get. Some the people I was with were absolute knuckleheads and dealing with them day after day was aggravating--yet, I also met the kindest, smartest people I know on this trip. Just stay away from the former and stick to the latter. PS: For the Caribbean trip, the list will tell you to pack wool socks. DO NOT PACK WOOL SOCKS. In fact, pack very little socks. You have been warned.

Seamester was a life changing experience and I will never forget it. The journey I completed was Seamester's Caribbean Basin 90-day voyage. We sailed on Seamester's auxiliary sailing vessel S/Y Argo. We started at Antigua and made our way south toward Grenada. Than we started heading west to Bonaire and then eventually to Cuba. I learned everything from Marine Biology to Navigating the waters. I will miss seeing shooting stars every night and having dolphins swimming up at the bow of the vessel. I will miss my Argo family as well.

Going on my Seamester journey is to date one of the best decisions I have made in my life. I made an amazing group of friends, who I am still in contact with. I got to sail across the Atlantic Ocean, which has been a dream of mine ever since I was little. I came onto this voyage, excited but not really knowing what to expect, I came out of it with a better understanding and new sense of the world. The trip was phenomenal and I am 100% glad I did it. The smell of the fresh ocean air mixed with the sight of nothing but ocean for miles in any direction is incredible, but also very hard to describe to people who have not experienced it. We started out in the BVIs with stops along the way to eventually get to our final destination of France. Along the way, we were doing everything on board. We took turns helming, going on watch, cooking our meals, cleaning up and more. You were a full member of the crew, and had the responsibilities as such. On top of that, we were also taking an oceanography class, which you may be able to get college credit for. It sounds like a lot, but it is completely manageable and you will never be bored. This was an experience that I will never forget and I hope you get the opportunity to as experience it as well.

Seamester was the most unique learning experience I've ever had. Not many classrooms, for example, allow you to learn the taxonomy of various marine organisms and then jump in the (warm Caribbean) water and see those organisms with your own eyes. We literally took a deep dive into the material we were learning! The combination of that kind of visual and experiential learning and being detached from reality/ off the grid is a one of a kind opportunity. Not only do you learn marine biology, oceanography, and develop sailing and scuba diving skills, but you also learn about yourself. You push your limits, you learn what a team is, and you learn what is important and what is necessary. When you are in the middle of the ocean with 25 amazing people and the stars, you suddenly realize your Facebook doesn't matter that much. And regardless of learning, it's hard to beat waking up on a new island every few days, knowing that you and your team got yourselves there. Its hard to beat a whole semester of ocean baths, salty hair, boom swings, waterfall swims, star gazing, hammock naps, sunsets, windsurfing, coconut drinking, and fun. And It's hard to beat adding 20 new stamps to your passport, logging 25 dives, and making 25 new lifetime friends (we just had a 5 year reunion!). All in 90 days. I will cherish my experience with Seamester always.

Seamester was truly an incredible experience. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a classic Caribbean adventure. Life on Ocean Star is an adventure every day with sailing, hikes, diving, and more. The staff and students on my trip were amazing people; I missed them as soon as I left the boat! On Ocean Star you get to experience life at sea, from raising the sails to helming and navigating. The dive sites are amazing, as are the views from some of the highest mountains in the Lesser Antilles. While the living situation isn't exactly five-star, I got used to living out of a bunk really fast. Besides, who needs a big room when you're busy going on a new adventure every day!

I originally applied to Sea|Mester because I needed an adventure. I needed to get away from the standard suburban lifestyle I'd been living and find something new. 12 countries and even more islands than that and 1238.5 nautical miles, I think it's safe to say Sea|Mester was quite an adventure. I walked onto the ship and met 19 people, little did I know they'd quickly come to feel like family. I think that's what was so unique about this program, was just how quickly I began to feel like those strangers were my best friends -- even the staff. From them and from each other I learned more on deck than I think I would have in any traditional classroom on a college campus. Coming out of this trip not only did I take four classes, but I am also an Emergency First Responder and Rescue Diver certified. I got my Navigation Master and my VHF Operator Certification. I have an International Crew Certification. Plus, I could tell you all about copepods. If that's not convincing you, then I don't know what will. All I can say is this: apply. Put your all into your application because if you want to be there, then chances are you'll do great.

Fall semester through the Caribbean on Ocean Star was the most amazing time of my life without a doubt. Every moment is an adventure whether you are scuba diving, sailing, hiking, exploring islands, and even just having out with friends. The staff are hilarious and make everything fun and exciting, and the bond formed within the crew is truly like family. This is the study abroad trip everyone should experience.

This is honestly one of the best decisions I have ever mad in my life. I'm a junior at NYU (yes they'll take credits), and I had a blast sailing, diving, and studying with this crew. I wouldn't have traded this experience for anything. The academics were exactly what you'd expect of a college course, but the hands on learning environment made them that much easier to understand and integrate into my life. The sailing passages were a definite highlight. Night sailing, especially, was nothing short of magical. I promise, you will not regret doing this, but I can't promise you won't not regret not doing this ;)

I decided to come on a Sea|mester trip because I wasn't sure what exactly I wanted to do in life. It turned out to be exactly what I needed. It completely changed my attitude and outlook. You learn so much by doing and we got completely immersed in boat life very quickly. Our crew was like a family, including the staff. I have never felt so accomplished and I have never learned so much in that amount of time. I was going for my divemaster certification on this trip as well. The whole program is run so smoothly and everything is very professional. Classes are serious and we spent more time than you would expect studying. It truly was the best 3 months of my life and if you are debating on coming, just do it. It will change your life. Sea|mester revealed my passions to me.

SeaMester was truly the best experience of my life! I learned so much about myself, academics, practical skills, soft skills, and cultures all while sailing aboard a yacht across an ocean. Living on a boat is amazing and living so close to other students and your professors is a wonderful way to learn and grow. Some of my best friends are from this trip and they include the staff members on board. Along with all of this, SeaMester is so much fun!

I absolutely loved my Sea|Mester experience for two primary reasons: firstly, it gave me the opportunity to develop my knowledge of the ocean and sailing, as intended; secondly, Sea|Mester helped foster a sense of responsibility and self-confidence I hadn't even known I possessed. I found myself cleaning bathrooms on shore after I returned home. The confined quarters of the ship allowed my to bond further with my fellow students, people the likes of which I most probably never would have encountered elsewhere, than years upon years of traditional schooling. I came back from the sea much more satisfied with myself than when I left. Parts of the voyage are difficult, I'll admit. There are, naturally, quite a few challenges, both mental and physical, of living aboard a moving vessel of limited size. But it's all worth it: the boat allows everyone to shine. I can't recommend Sea|Mester highly enough, and I can't wait to get back out to sea.

This program was both an excellent learning opportunity and a life-changing experience. I was able to learn seamanship and nautical science under experienced sailors while living at sea. I saw places few ever visit and from a perspective unlike that of a typical student abroad, and I immersed myself in a unique culture - a ship at sea - spurring not only social development but also personal growth. Some of my fondest memories were formed on my voyage and I left with a refined character and a genuinely new outlook on life. I cannot speak highly enough of the program and recommend it without hesitation to anyone with a sense of adventure.

Loved sea mester one of the best experiences i have ever done. And everyone on board just made it so much more fun. 20 days on a boat with a bunch of stranger really does change you and make you open up and make you a better person.

Who knew that you could spend twenty days on a sailboat with nineteen strangers and end up with a second family by the end. This trip was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, from making new friendships and learning about myself to experiencing the island culture and learning how to sail. This trip reaffirmed my passion for sailing and has inspired me to one day sail the world.

This was one of the best experiences of my life. Every day was a new adventure and I got to make memories and meet people that I will never forget. The staff was fantastic and always helpful. I got to do things, like climb to the top of a volcano, that I would never get the opportunity to in my every day life. The islands are all so beautiful and different that by the end, I could not pick a favorite. Could not say enough good things about this program and I highly recommend it.

While the trip was short, I learned so much and gained so many new friends. I am still in contact with them and we have reunions every so often. I was genuinely sad to leave Ocean Star. She will always remain a home to me. The trip taught me a lot about my leadership skills, natural love for exploring, and mental capability. Sailing requires strength in a mental way that challenges and humbles you. Exploring islands was a great way to be adventurous and gain experience talking with locals and finding new places. There's nothing quite like this program and I hope to do it again for longer some day.

The Seamester 40 day program is a ton of fun. The adventures are endless; from diving almost everyday to hikes that will challenge even the most in shape of people there is never a dull moment. The tight quarters may seem like a challenge towards the beginning of the trip, but in reality they help to foster a sense of family among the program's staff and participants that is incredibly quick to develop and lasts after the trip as well. Some highlights include the boiling lake in Dominica and diving in Saba. St Barths is a nice refreshing reminder of the ritzy, touristy caribbean as well.

my trip with seamester was more than i had ever dreamed of -- i mean, living on boat in the caribbean for three months?! so cool. the trip itself was incredible; i loved sailing and diving and grew so much in my knowledge and confidence in both. classes were difficult at times, but always fun. i'm not a science person, but there's definitely no better place to take marine biology or oceanography than on a boat. i loved getting to meet other students and build friendships with people who i wouldn't have ever met without this trip. the friendships i made were so deep and i know i'll value them forever. the staff rocked -- i loved getting to know them and become friends with them. it's not every day that you get to hang out with your teachers (or would even want to), but i loved being with them! going on shore at all the different islands taught me so much about different cultures and i loved being a part of something bigger than myself. i loved using my phone way less than i do at home and getting to focus on other people and other cultures and learning to work as a team. seamester was a life changing experience and i'm so thankful for the opportunity i had!

I studied abroad in the BVI’s to give myself a break and self-reflect. For 80 days I completely went off the grid and I reflected about what I want to accomplish my senior year of college. This program gave me all that and more, I met great people and made friends for life.

I chose Seamester because I was able to visit multiple countries and continents in the same semester! I also wanted to learn how to sail, so the sail training and scuba instruction were huge benefits! Seamester is so interesting because it takes a unique person to want to board a sailboat with a group of strangers and cross an ocean! The staff and students onboard are so amazing! Each person had such a unique story and we all came together to from a cohesive, working family. The team work and communication skills Seamester developed in each of us were enough to make the trip worth it.. let alone the knowledge and experience! We rode camels on the beaches of Morocco, went zip lining in Spain, saw the Coliseum in Rome and hiked mountains and beaches of many islands from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean! Seamester was so much more than a study abroad experience. I met my best friends, changed my career path and now I work everyday in a field that I love. I will never stop exploring and adventuring and I recommend Seamester and studying abroad to everyone I meet!

Seamester is the most unique program because not only do you get to visit many different places around the world in a span of 3 months, but you also make life long friends with the 25 or so shipmates. Not only are you living with these people, but you are also cooking, and sailing, and taking classes with them as well. In a matter of 90 days you will be able to say that you have met another group of people that you can call your family. My favorite part of my program besides the amazing places we visited, the amount of miles we were able to sail, the wonderful classes that we had the opportunity to take, the beautiful scuba diving we were able to partake in was the magnificent people that became my second family. Seamester impacts my life at home on a daily basis. It has taught me to live in the moment and to appreciate everything around me. I have learned the essence of adventure, and the importance of incorporating adventure in my day-to-day life. I have become the person I am today because of Seamester.

I was fortunate enough to be acquainted with Sea|mester through their high school community service programs and knew that it was the type of organization worth risking a semester abroad to study beyond the scope of my major. Living onboard a 112’ schooner for three months studying marine science and conducting oceanographic research doesn’t have much to do with music composition so while it was a stretch getting the credits to count towards anything, I knew this experience offered something you could never get at a traditional university. The program offers such an amazing variety of traditional academics, practical training (from making cookies to dropping anchor), and fun that in retrospect I couldn’t imagine choosing any other program. I almost got tired of describing it to people before I left because it just sounds like the coolest experience a person can have and everybody wants to know more. I feel more confident in my ability to lead and I’m not as afraid of misfortune, conflict, or failure. I can safely say I’m a better person than I thought I could be because of my time onboard with Sea|mester.

I think the uniqueness of the program is what makes it so interesting. I did not find any other programs for a semester abroad that could take me to so many different parts of the world. Also the fact that we became part of the crew and were the ones physically sailing across the Indian Ocean is an experience not many get to have. My favorite part of the program is hard to pinpoint because it all was amazing. If I had to pick one I’d say anytime we were sailing without the motor because it was extremely peaceful.

I chose Seamester because it was an incredibly unique option, with wonderful reviews and a really exciting travel itinerary. There are so many reasons why Seamester is so amazing. Between living on a boat and sailing across oceans, learning how to sail and dive, having your shipmates become family, learning about stuff (marine biology, oceanography, leadership, etc.) and actually getting to use it, learning to cook meals for 20 people, to getting to explore different countries and beautiful destinations you read about in magazines. It will change how you view the world if you let it. It really takes you out of the box you put yourself in and teaches you about yourself, other people, and how you work in a team. My Seamester experience has completed altered my future plans. Instead of simply going to grad school and staying the states to finish my education, I will be taking a gap year to teach English in Korea and really immerse myself in another culture. Seamester was really my first taste of travel and it helped me broaden the horizons for where I see myself in the future.

I loved every moment of this trip. 3 months sailing the ocean from Australia to Thailand was the most incredible experience that I have had so far in my life. I would do every Sea|Mester trip if I had the time. It changed me in countless ways, for the better. I got on the ship not entirely certain of what I wanted to do with my life, and I left with an insane amount of clarity about what I want my future to look like. This trip was not easy though but that is part of what made it so rewarding. All of the work that you do on the ship makes you stronger physically and mentally. The classes were fantastic although it was hard to pay attention at times i left with more knowledge about a lot of things from marine biology to basic sail training. The amount of diving that we got to do was definitely a bonus, diving the Great Barrier Reef is something that most people only dream of doing. I recommend this program 100%. The benefits that it has had on my life are countless, I can't wait to see where I travel next.

Sea|Mester is the best way to see whats out there. The different cultures of the islands is always eye opening. I think that this program offers the BEST possible environment to learn in. You become friends with all of your professors, and you are learning about the fish and processes of the ocean that surrounds you every day. You delve into sailing and life aboard a ship becomes very natural. The sailing is very intuitive no matter your skill level. Not having your phone or internet to distract you lets you look up, and see whats out there: and boy is it beautiful. It must be impossible to be sad on this trip, every sunset seems to be more perfect than the last, and every island has its own character. I suggest this trip to everyone that I see and to all of you who read this review. Sea|Mester has changed my life indefinitely, and I could not be happier with the lessons I learned aboard Ocean Star. Health and Safety: I felt very safe aboard this ship, and we practiced emergency procedures just to be sure. Social Life: You form a really close bond with your shipmates. Everyone that I went with was great; it takes a certain type of person to decide to spend a semester aboard a ship.

My experience with Seamester was amazing, wonderful, exciting! I could go on and on. It has been almost 2 years since my voyage and I still get so excited and happy when I think back on my trip. I have done other study abroad programs where you stay in a host country, and while that type of experience is wonderful, Seamester takes it to a different level.

Seamester was the best experience of my life. I had no diving or sailing experience prior to this trip. I came out with a sailing certificate and an advanced PADI diving certificate. The friendships and experiences I had on this trip are probably going to be some of the best memories of my life. Some highlights were swimming with dolphins, hiking in the rainforest and seeing bioluminescence while sailing in the middle of the night. Words really can not describe how beneficial Seamester was for me. Anyone who has a desire to travel and seeks adventure can't afford to miss out on this study abroad program. Academics: On my program Oceanography and Seamanship were offered. The classes were so fun it hardly felt like work. Studying Oceanography while living on a boat is amazing. Oceanography had many PowerPoints and labs. The labs were mostly observation in the water while snorkeling or on a boat. There was also a group project and an individual paper. There was a midterm and a final. Grade Received: B Seamanship also had a midterm and final. Some PowerPoints but mostly everything was hands on, learning as you went. Grade received: A Living Situation: We lived on S/Y Oceanstar the entire time. In my small room there were 6 beds built into the wall and just outside our room were six more. Room was extremely tight but I give it an A+ because we were living as sailors on a sailboat. It was part of the experience and the adventure. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Cultural Immersion: My program took us to the West Indies from BVI to Dominica and islands in-between. Whenever we went to shore, which was often, we had a chance to talk to locals. Some tour guides were well known by staff that we were able to become friends with. Program Administration: Every time I came in contact with anyone from Seamester I was impressed. Emails are returned quickly. They will even talk on the phone or by email to your schools administrators to help you get situated. I felt very safe with the Oceanstar staff. They were responsible but also made the trip fun. Health and Safety: Considering the fact that we were on a sailboat in the middle of the caribbean, sometimes not even able to see land, I would say I felt very safe. We had multiple drills in case of emergency. We wore life vests during passages. Sometimes sail raises were a bit dangerous, but the staff always had a close eye on us to make sure everything was done correctly. Social Life: Our boat had 17 people. We became a family in those 40 days. With so many people in close quarters there were going to be some problems. For the most part everyone built each other up and helped whenever possible. I was most concerned about this and I ended up becoming life long friends with everyone aboard.

I can't say enough about my experience with Sea|mester I was a part of the 40-day summer in the Caribbean program on S/Y Ocean Star in the Summer of 2010. I had an absolutely incredible experience. I was with 11 students and four crew members. Our crew members were top notch there was not a time where I felt uncomfortable or unsafe. I had quite the fear of scuba diving and our dive master Casey really took his time and helped me ease into diving. It has now become a live long hobby for me. The cultural experience that I had while I was there was unmatched we got to see and do things that only locals do! If I had the time in my schedule I would have done the 80-day program!!

No regrets at all. SeaMester made me a better person and its the best program for young people who want a an amazing and lifechanging experiance. I did the TransAtlantic 90 day. Academics: Tough but very rewarding academics. Living Situation: You're living on a boat which you work to keep clean. People shouldn't expect elegance, but the berths are very very comfortable (imagine summer camp)

This was the most amazing 3 months of my life. I learned so much about myself. The boat is amazing. The staff are so cool. you become so independent, but you also get really good at working as a team. Parts of this program can be really tough, but you feel so much stronger for getting through it with your friends. I would do it again in a second.
