Community Healthcare Internship in Peru
Program Overview
Calling all med students and young doctors! Here’s your chance to make a huge impact for a small community in the Peruvian Amazon whilst experiencing the highs and lows of providing healthcare in a developing country. This program places you with a conservation-focused nonprofit that works to create long-lasting change in our relationship with the Amazon by uplifting the communities that live there. Their aim is to create new job opportunities in Puerto Inca that don’t rely on destruction of the rainforest - help to break the cycle of poverty, reduce the need for activities like logging and illegal mining - whilst incentivising sustainable development. The NGO works to improve the region’s infrastructure and healthcare, consequently supporting tourism. You'll help provide medical support to a remote healthcare center struggling with overcrowding, poor infrastructure, and limited resources. Depending on level of experience and qualifications, there is a wide range of departments that you could work on - general medicine, obstetrics, nursing, psychology, odontology, pharmaceuticals, or lab work - doing incredibly valuable work that is equally challenging and rewarding.

Do I need a degree for this program?
Yes, this program is only open to those studying towards or have completed a degree in medicine. Also, to involve yourself with any of the specialist areas, you’ll need qualifications or prior experience.
Do I need to know Spanish for this program?
Yes, applicants should have at least intermediate Spanish language skills. There are people who’ll be able to translate for you, but they won’t always be available.
Where will I live during this program?
Interns stay in basic huts. We will provide breakfast & lunch during working days. You will need to cook your own food during evening time and weekends. Accommodation is equipped with all the basics (showers, beds, wifi, a kitchen) but they’re very rustic, so this program is best suited to those comfortable with a stripped-back lifestyle.
