Teaching Internship in Peru
by: Roots Interns
Help to educate the next generation of conservation leaders in an underprivileged community in the Peruvian Amazon. This is your opportunity to live and work in the Amazon Rainforest, contribute to its conservation, and make a better future for the people that live there. Based in Puerto Inca, this organization works to protect the Amazon by uplifting local communities and equipping them with the skills and knowledge to develop sustainably. They run a range of community development and youth empowerment with the aim of creating employment opportunities that don’t rely on destruction of the rainforest. These include courses teaching English, German, permaculture, business management, creative arts and media, and a kids explorer (scouts) program. As an intern you’ll help to develop and improve curriculums, create teaching materials, and independently run workshops. Depending on which course you choose to focus on, you’ll also get the chance to participate in reforestation projects or run nature expeditions with the children. You’ll spend the majority of your days in the classroom, teaching both children and adults and building close relationships with the community.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it necessary to speak Spanish for this program?
Yes, the majority of Puerto Inca don’t speak English, so interns will need to be at an intermediate level of Spanish
What qualifications are needed for this program?
No degree is required for this program. However, to teach languages, fluency in your chosen language is necessary. TEFL isn’t necessary but preferred.
What accommodation is provided for interns?
You’ll stay in unadorned hut-style accommodation. You’ll have beds with mosquito nets, showers, WiFi, and a well-equipped kitchen, but this program is better suited to those who are comfortable with rough-and-ready living quarters. The showers do not have hot water. Seeing the tropical weather there is no need for hot water, but feel free to use the stove to warm some water if needed.
