Are you looking for an African conservation adventure that will give you a basic understanding of the local wildlife and its natural environment? And at the same time, do you want to sharpen all your senses?

Then, take this opportunity to become part of the wildlife monitoring program in South Africa's Limpopo! Get involved as a volunteer and contribute to meaningful wildlife management through data collection, an essential part of any conservation project. The critical species of interest are lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo, hornbills, rhinos, wild dogs, and hyenas.

Together with an international volunteering team, dedicate yourself to the observation of wild animal ranging patterns and behavioral aspects. You will learn the art of tracking. During monitoring walks, you will walk in the footsteps of the tracked animal, always under the instruction of skilled guides.

What happens after my arrival?

There will be a safety meeting where vital rules of conduct in an unfenced camp will be explained. In addition, there will be a guided tour to familiarize you with the camp.

What are my main activities?

Game counting program to determine populations of general game
Locating elephants as part of the ongoing research
Monitoring drives to locate key species
Waterhole monitoring for species utilization
Habitat work (e.g. exotic plant removal, erosion control, or bush clearing)
Night patrols
Transferring all collected data onto computers daily
Compiling weekly research reports
Helping out with vehicle checks and cleaning

How big is my group?

The main camp accommodates 12 to 14 volunteers, and the tented camp 8 to 10 volunteers.

The busiest times of the year are typically July and August.

What is the accommodation like?

The camps differ in that the accommodation is in solid buildings at one location and at the other in large tents. At both sites, the sleeping area is shared with other participants. The bathrooms, with western-style toilets and bush showers, are also shared. The main camp has permanent power. The power supply in the tented camp via solar panels is relatively stable. Wi-Fi can be only booked at the main camp for a small additional fee.

Is it possible to receive vegetarian meals?

A vegetarian diet, as well as other special diets, can be considered. We ask you to let us know in advance so that our partner has enough time to arrange everything accordingly. In general, a vegetarian diet is covered. But for some allergies, participants may have to get some specific supplements themselves (e.g. lactose and gluten).
