Program Overview

Become a conservation volunteer in Zambia and help collect essential conservation data and protect orphaned elephants gradually released back into the wild as part of our partner’s release program. During your three-week volunteer adventure, you will spend each week in a different location in this fascinating country – from the vibrant capital of Lusaka to the spectacular Kafue National Park.

As a volunteer, you will gain insight into the program’s elephant behavioural observation studies, learn about anti-poaching and wildlife rehabilitation, use a range of methodologies to help collect biodiversity data in local national parks, and help with staff capacity building. Moreover, you will have the chance to get involved with different community outreach projects.

At the end of your stay, you will have gained an incomparable insight into all three of our partners’ core thematic areas – community outreach, wildlife rescue, and resource protection – to return home with a backpack full of new research skills and unforgettable wildlife memories. probably the most magical journey

The trip to Zambia gave me an insight into a culture that I would not have been able to discover as a tourist. An insight into biodiversity, coexistence of humans and animals, political and social systems, hospitality, adventure, moving emotions and the most magical sunrises and sunsets. From the first call, to the debriefing of the trip and even on site, Natucate was by my side. Daniel made the entire process very pleasant and easy with a high level of competence and a lot of empathy. For me it felt like coming home. Meeting such inspiring people is not a given. I look forward to further adventures with you and can recommend Natucate with all my heart.

What happens after my arrival?

After your arrival at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka, you will be picked up and taken to the Elephant Nursery near the capital. Here, you will have time to get settled, get to know your team, learn more about the program, and become familiar with important safety and camp rules. On the following day, the actual project work begins for you.

How big is the group?

The project can accommodate three volunteers each month. Together with all employees, a maximum of 15 to 20 people will be in the camps during the day.

What does the accommodation look like?

You will live on the campgrounds in your own tent, which includes a bed/mattress, a pillow, and bedding. There are communal sanitary facilities, a communal kitchen, and a lounge area. Camps are powered by solar energy, so charging options (in the central camp area) may be limited. All clothes must be hand-washed.

Are vegan/vegetarian meals possible?

Yes, considering a vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free diet is possible. As refrigeration possibilities are quite limited, the daily diet will be mainly vegetarian anyway. Please let us know about any dietary requests as soon as possible in order for our partner to have enough time for appropriate arrangements.
