Working with Kids—Volunteer in Costa Rica!

by: MAXIMO NIVEL

4.61 (122)VerifiedSince 2003

Costa Rica has a high population of orphans, street kids, and other at-risk children who are in constant need of love, care, and support. Help respond to their needs by taking part in a range of volunteer projects, including working in orphanages, rural schools, and community centers, and street children programs. Projects focus on providing boys and girls with shelter, food, and education to support their basic needs. As a volunteer, you'll help keep them off the streets as well as provide them with a happy, productive childhood. Depending on individual skills and interests, volunteers act as mentors, help with homework, organize sports and arts and crafts, and teach English. However, your care and support are the most important things for these disadvantaged children. This program is available all year round, with start dates every Monday. It's designed to take place for as short as 1 week and up to 1 year. NOTE: This program qualifies for 3-4 university credits via our School of Record. Volunteers must be over 18 years of age or accompanied by a parent or guardian. We require background checks and proof of medical insurance.

Program Highlights

Experience the Spanish way of life and culture while staying in San Jose for one week or longer.

Improve your Spanish by taking our language classes and practicing with locals.

My experience was so fun!

I had a really good time in Costa Rica. It was my first time in the country, and probably not the last! The children I worked with were so adorable and I enjoyed every moment of it, when teaching, feeding, putting them to sleep or just disciplining them! I also had some excursions, in the Catamaran and Manuel Antonio Park, and I was lucky enough to get both days very sunny with a clear water. The program in general was so fun, not to mention that I met so many amazing people that helped me throughout the journey.

My time here was quite eye opening. It caused me to learn more about a foreign culture and allowed to have life experiences to talk about. Teaching children about oral hygiene was my favourite part of the program.

This trip was important for 3 reasons. 1. It was the furthest I’ve been from home 2. It has been the most culturally interactive trip I’ve been on 3. This is the most Independent I’ve been abroad I have learned so much about myself on this trip and I couldn’t ask for more.

I came alone as a 17 year old, not really knowing what to expect. As soon as I arrived I met loads of people from around the world who were a mixture of ages including lots of 17 year olds. We made so many plans and did so many things together and it made my experience volunteering way more than just the childcare aspect. I made lifelong friends whilst giving back to the community.

This program is such a beautiful experience, because we are not only helping and taking care of children that are in need of comfort and love but we are having fun planning the activities and playing with them. We love the kids and I would come back a thousand times more to see them again.

I chose to do a Childcare program in Manuel Antonio and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made!! I am 17 and it was not only my first time abroad but I was also solo. I felt so much support from the Maximo Nivel staff and this was crucial for my program because I think otherwise I would have been extremely anxious and scared. The program itself was truly the highlight of my trip- I fell in love with the children and they made the entire experience so worthwhile. I am endlessly grateful. Take the leap!!

It was my first time travelling without my parents in another country and I was really scared at first, but when I arrived, I felt way better. I got lucky because I was placed to a daycare, close to my housing. I had the best time staying with my host mother. She told the most amazing stories and we had so much fun. The food was amazing. The volunteering was also great. It was a good way to practise my Spanish, because the kids speak in simple words. It was a rewarding experience. On my last day I brought a gift and sweets and they really liked that. My last day was great. Maximo visited several times and they checked on us. A small thing, but important. I met a lot of nice people who took classes or did volunteering here. We went on trips and went went for drinks together. Overall, I am glad I did this! Unforgettable

Maximo Nivel has been nothing short of amazing to me and my group. This has pushed me in ways I’ve never known I could be pushed from leadership, to patience, to overcoming my fear of heights, and even trying new foods. Back home my food cannot touch but since I’ve been here, it hasn’t stopped touching and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I’ve stepped out on faith and yall took me in with open arms. Thank you! I’m honestly so sad to leave.

This message explains exactly how well this week has been through Maximo Nivel in Costa Rica.

My university and I did a weeklong service trip in Quepos and Manuel Antonio. My favorite experience of the program was volunteering at a daycare with kids. This experience was very enriching, and helping the kids get as also a great opportunity to practice Spanish. We were able to brighten the days of the kids with games, conversations, a piñata, and ice cream. I would recommend Maximo to anyone interested in volunteering abroad.

I’ve had an amazing experience with Maximo Nivel. They’ve been a real God send, the reasurance they give you from the start is wonderful & calms any nerves or doubts. The experience of volunteering itself has been an utter delight & a real privilege. In the time you volunteer you are offered many day outings to many wonderful places to break up your volunteering time & also for Marlon, Rina, Mckensie & all the incredibly dedicated staff to show how much they appreciate you volunteering your time. The whole experience has been one I will remember very fondly for the rest of my life. I hope to be back volunteering again with Maximo Nivel again very soon. Thankyou so much to such an amazing organisation!

I had no idea what to expect doing this program. I was technically alone in a foreign country, which could be quite frightening. However, Maximo Nivel provided excellent structure for navigating all of the aspects of doing this program. I highly recommend Maximo Nivel for any volunteer abroad program. This was a once in a lifetime experience - perhaps? I am excited to do something similar again!

The stay in Costa Rica was very cool. It was especially exciting to meet other people, like other volunteers and locals. Working with children was also very good, although there were some communication difficulties, as I barely speak Spanish. The children were still happy to have someone from another country by their side for four weeks. On the weekends, we were able to do activities like going to the beach or visiting national parks.

I enjoyed my project at Costa Rica for many reasons. I felt that my work at Los Pollitos was very impactful because I was able to teach some of the kids Spanish, and even some of the teachers as well. Then, on the social side of the trip, I met many new people and made so many friends. We even rented an Airbnb for a night in Quepos to see the Manuel Antonio Beach. Overall, the trip was a great success.

Awesome 2 Months in Quepos

April 05, 2025by: Sydney Gustinger - United States

I had a great experience volunteering with Maximo Nivel in Quepos. Their program is advertised as Manuel Antonio, but it’s actually Quepos (which is better tbh for a more local experience). For our first two weeks here, I volunteered in a church, running a sort of summer camp. For the last 8 weeks, I volunteered in a Kindergarten class. We volunteered 2 and 3 hours a day, respectively. If I’m being honest, I wish we had more time volunteering. The program isn’t cheap, and I came to volunteer my time so I didn’t feel satisfied at the amount of time we had to volunteer. It feels as though they break up the shifts in three hour increments to fit more volunteers into the schedule. With that in mind, most of your day outside of those couple hours are free if you like to have more downtime to visit the beautiful beaches or go on tours. The program is advertised to people with any Spanish ability, but I would highly reccomend at least speaking on an intermediate level or you will have a really hard time actually helping, communicating, or making friends. In touristy places, most people speak english but at volunteer placements, they do not. Making connections with individuals at my volunteer site and within the community was what made my experience really incredible. If I had not put as much effort into doing so, I would not have had as positive of an experience. Please reach outside of your comfort zone, and outside of the organization to make connections, learn, and explore. It will completely change your experience volunteering and your life.

I would do this again for sure!

April 04, 2025by: Dylan Gerow - Canada

This was definitely out of my comfort zone, I also haven’t worked around too many kids in my life but this program was worth it for sure, I’m not sure what kind of impact two weeks would have on a group of kids but I like to think I helped to some extent. I got to experience kids of different ages and their culture and how they perceive the world versus how I would coming from Canada, I personally believe you need to do this for more than a week to get the best of the program especially being around kids who probably see multiple volunteers come in and out of their location.

My goal of the program was to gain new perspective, see how others around the world live, and impact the lives of young kids. I can say I accomplished all of this in the program. I would definitely recommend this to others wishing to do the same.

Wonderful opportunity with children!

The beginning of the trip was not the best as the host family I was staying with were all sick. They didn’t tell Maximo Nivel and I didn’t want to risk getting sick when I was going to be working with children. I asked to move to a different host family and was told I had to come back on Monday to request relocation. I ended up staying in a hotel for 2 nights before being moved. The next host family was amazing! I am so grateful for all they do for the volunteers and how welcome they made us feel. I also loved working with the children; teaching English, playing with them, and anything needed. I am adaptable and knew to expect some hiccups. Maximo did assist with transportation the day they moved me to the new family to assist with the inconvenience. The staff were all super helpful and kind at Maximo and the volunteer site. The tours were incredible (highly recommend La Paz Waterfalls).

When I arrived, Anastasia and the rest of the Maximo staff were so welcoming and helpful in bringing me to my placement and showing me around the city. Once I started my volunteer project, it was so awesome getting to work with kids from this community. It was so eye opening and fun to see how my impact affected the community I was serving. 10/10 would do this again!!

The experience of working with children is fantastic and gives me a lot of joy! I can highly recommend volunteering because you get out of your comfort zone and can also contribute your own ideas and take on responsibility. However, I recommend learning a bit of Spanish beforehand, as this makes it easier to understand the children.

I came to work with kids also to improve my experience as a coach working with kids back home and I really enjoyed the activities the teachers did with the kinds and how they integrated me in them. I learned new games, met and got the chance of helping amazing young kids and had fun playing and dancing together with the kids and teachers. I recommend to be open-minded, flexible with the schedule and creative with the activities. The teachers have infinite ideas of different activities so you will never get bored.

I enjoyed the work and had great time, 10/10 would recommend!

Beautiful experience with child care in San Jose

August 29, 2024by: Suhana Sehota - Canada

The kids are absolutely precious and adorable. They all want to learn English and do activities, however the staff there are incredibly lazy so if you want to interact with the kids, the volunteers have to be the ones to organize activities. Staff are really unwelcoming and I would not recommend this project if you are travelling solo. The neighbourhood is very dangerous, can be unsettling, Maximo will Not tell you this before you arrive in Costa Rica, so be cautious and mindful that you may have to spend extra $ on Ubers depending on how far your host family is. The experience can be lovely if you ignore the culture of the staff and bring activities for the kids. The kids genuinely want to learn English and do activities, the staff just does not care to organize things so be prepared for that responsibility. Be mindful that if you are not a native Spanish speaker, the culture can feel very off putting as staff will refer to you as gringa and not respect or talk to you as much vs if you are a native Spanish speaker. Aside from these risks, the project itself of helping the children is lovely and would recommend if you are travelling with someone and want a heart warming experience with adorable children. Would not recommend as a solo volunteer being there.

Great way to give back while being immersed in culture. I recommend learning the language a bit before coming. I was nervous as I haven’t worked with children in a long time. The language was a difficult barrier to cross, but after some time and use of translation app it worked fine. The kids were great and happy to see volunteers.

I was nervous coming in because I didn’t know Spanish. I definitely would learn more if I redid the process. The kids were great but it’s easier to talk with teachers with some Spanish. And interacting with locals is a lot easier.

Thank you Maximo

The Maximo staff is excellent and works very hard to ensure everyone is having a great time. The only feedback I have is that the information provided in advance and on day of orientation on what to expect was pretty inaccurate. The program guides and day to day staff are all excellent but often do not have power to change things, so sometimes when these inaccuracies become an issue it takes a while for the people who have the power to change things to make it happen behind the scenes.

Spent three weeks in Costa Rica working with kids and it was amazing! Got to love all the kids, the school and the city! Maximo was easy to communicate with which made the process a lot easier. Can’t say enough about the home stay I was with too, loved the whole family! The only thing I wish was different was that I hoped they’d give more information about what to expect from the project itself. For example, there were two shift time (9-12, 1-4pm) and we didn’t find out which slot we were assigned to until the day we got there. While I understand splitting up volunteers, it made seeing the country/city harder to plan. Otherwise was so good and loved every moment here!

It took a leap of faith to do this with my 69 year old neighbor but come to find out we were in great hands in a well orchestrated program! Our host family, Carmen, Welberth and the rest of their family were very kind and helpful We saw a lot of love in that household. Their were approximatly 14 kids to entertain each day (ages 3 - 13) Generally we had 3 IVHQ - Maximo Nevil volunteers and MARCELLA, a local angel who really helped us communicate with the kids. I am sorry to leave these bright and happy children. They lit up my life. The crew at Maximo Nivel were excellent. A quick response for everything and with a smile. They really snapped to with great medical help when my friend fell and broke her wrist. The emergency clinic personal were also very professional and kind. Nothing is ever perfect, especially in a very foreign country. You just have to flexible and patient and not afraid. My only complaint is that it´s super hot here (Feb). I´m sure Matt, Chloe, Vivana and Ashanti are working on it. Jolene Bowers - Connecticut

I volunteered at a childcare placement in Manuel Antonio Costa Rica for 6 weeks between November and December 2023. This involved organising games, arts/crafts, teaching English and other activities at a sports centre for up to twenty five children aged 4-15yrs after school. The project was well organised, there was plenty of support from Maximo Nivel and the facility staff, and opportunity to provide new ideas. I would really recommend this project to anybody who wants to volunteer with children abroad.

This experience exceeded all my expectations. I grew so much as a person and developed so many strong connections. In four weeks, not only did my Spanish significantly improve but also my ability to live independently and adjust to a new way of life and culture. I am grateful that I pushed myself out of my comfort zone because after completing this program, I feel empowered to take on new experiences. Not only do I feel like I helped myself grow through this experience but it was also such a rewarding experience to watch the kids I volunteered with learn more English every day and become more comfortable with me as the weeks went on. I developed close relationships with so many of the kids and I learned just as much from them, if not more, as they did from me.

As a volunteer through Maximo Nivel, I worked at a childcare center with kids ages 2-4 in San Jose, Costa Rica. My experience was amazing! Both the kids and teachers I worked with were incredibly sweet and energetic. At the Maximo Program center, I met volunteers from so many different places around the world, as well as so many kind and supportive staff members. Additionally, the host family Maximo placed me with was so friendly and hospitable. Through immersion at the childcare center, practice activities at the Maximo Program center, and time with my host family, I was also able to develop foundational communication skills in Spanish. I am so grateful for my experience and would highly recommend this program to anyone who is interested!

I would recommend Máximo Nivel a million times over. The warm, engaging staff and volunteer/student community makes you feel welcome from the moment you step in the door and I met several life-long friends. There are lots of opportunities to go explore, including around the city and the country as a whole. I felt so fulfilled working in the childcare program with students who are eager to learn-- I learned a lot about myself from them and my Spanish really flourished. I can´t say enough great things about this company and the programs, best experience ever!

I think this trip has been interesting for me and also challenging but this is how we grow. Originally, I was not going to be doing this project however it turned out the best it could as I had so much fun and loved going to the daycare center. It meant a lot to me to try and make a difference to the children's day. After I felt more confident being in a different country on my own, I gained the confidence to interact with people. Overall volunteering abroad has been one of the best decisions of my life, not only have I helped at my program I have developed as a person, and I am proud of myself for this.

I came here really excited to start working and exploring but was very nervous being in a foreign country. I had never travelled like this before. As soon as I got here, Maximo Nivel was incredibly helpful, supportive, and accommodating. They showed us the city, took us on tours, and provided an inclusive source of information. They made getting around everywhere via bus seem less daunting than I had been anticipating, and by the second day, I was ready and able to tackle it on my own. At the childcare center I was nervous because I spoke very little Spanish, but as soon as I walked in, the kids all ran up to me with big smiles and open hearts. Even in the short week I was here, I grew very attached to those little children and am going to miss them very much. I am very grateful to have had this opportunity.

At first I was scared coming to Costa Rica alone as a 17 year old, especially since I didn't know any Spanish. I believed that I would be the only person in the child care program and that I would have to navigate a foreign country all alone. But when I arrived in Costa Rica it was the opposite of what I believed. I was welcomed by the staff at Maximo Nivel who gave me tips, tours, and guides for Costa Rica making being in a foreign country manageable. Not only that but I also made many friends through Maximo Nivel and learned that I wasn't the only one dealing with being in an unfamiliar country. Even now I regret that I only had a 1 week experience of Costa Rica as it was some of the most fun I've ever had. This program is a life changing and must try experience. If you do decide to take this program remember to make the most of your time as when your having fun time flies. But also remember to be safe and conscious of the Costa Rican culture.

To all the young adults debating on whether or not you should leave your home and volunteer in a totally new country....JUST DO IT! I was a little skeptical at first given that i'm only 17 years old and a women of colour, but let me tell you volunteering with Maximo Nivel has been quite literally a life changing experience. I participated in the childcare program located in San Jose. The staff at maximo were incredibly helpful and constantly encouraging me to venture out and experience the culture located here in Costa Rica. If your afraid of having no support from others and have the feeling that you will have to figure out everything by yourself once you get here, that is not the case. Try it! Its completely safe and its a once in a life time experience that you will never regret! Have fun and PURA Vida! If you have any questions feel free to dm me on insta.

Volunteering with Maximo Nivel is an unforgettable experience. I was nervous when arriving, but right off the bat I felt welcome by the Maximo Nivel representative who was waiting at the airport to pick me up. The program began with an orientation that was very helpful and made me very excited for the week to come. The next day I was shown to my project placement, a daycare in a neighborhood called Purral. Working at this daycare was definitely the highlight of my trip. The children were so sweet, adorable, and fun. Some of the activities we did with them included playing games, sports, assisting the teachers in class, doing arts and crafts, passing out snacks, and feeding the kids lunch. The daycare teachers were very kind too. By the end, it felt great to be there and I woke up everyday excited to go to the daycare again. Another great thing about this program is the amount of flexibility given to the volunteers. I don't feel confined or overcontrolled at all, rather free but with support. After our work at the project placement is done, we can do whatever we want. I went to new neighborhoods, tried so many different restaurants, and more. Although I was unfamiliar with the city, it pushed me to be more independent, which I am so grateful for. Also, the Maximo Nivel headquarters is a very nice office right in the middle of San Jose. Everyone who works here is extremely nice and will help the volunteers with whatever they need. There's even a cafe. The office has a travel agency that is super informative and has a lot of options if someone is looking to take a day trip or a weekend getaway to some gorgeous locations like Manuel Antonio or Playa Jaco. I went and it was so easy to plan a trip, and the beach was so beautiful. Overall, my time with Maximo Nivel in Costa Rica was an amazing experience. I would totally come back. I highly recommend people to come here if you love to travel and experiencing new things.

Teaching English in Costa Rica

December 04, 2021by: Shannon La Nou - United States
4

I spent the last 16 weeks volunteering at a school teaching English. Overall, the experience was very moving and beneficial to me as a person and as a teacher by profession. Everything was communicated very well and expectations were clearly outlined. Maximo worked hard to ensure that my needs were met and that I was happy and comfortable in my situation. I appreciated their flexibility with various changes that I requested. It was a great opportunity to meet new people, engage in different cultural traditions, and travel around the country. The teacher and the students at the school were so appreciative of me and it showed when their eyes lit up every day when I arrived at the school. I truly felt appreciated in my role. Of course, there were some challenges, but the staff at Maximo, as well as my host family, were very supportive in helping me overcome those challenges. Adjusting to a new country, working with students and a teacher that did not speak English, and adjusting to fluctuations within the program were a few challenges, but they were very minimal, and as mentioned, were easily overcome with support. I would highly recommend an experience such as this because it is rewarding and it is wonderful to see the impact you have on those around you.

We did the Maximo Nivel program without knowing much about Costa Rica, the culture or the program. It turned out wonderful. We learned so much about the culture! The placement was great for our family, we actually were all able to go to one place, but then go to different areas of the day care and have different, individual experiences. We also were able to use afternoons to explore the city and other places, which led to a truly immersive trip.

Throughout the four weeks of volunteering, I learned a lot. It is one of the most meaningful, rewarding trip that I've ever experienced. Befpre coming to Costa Rica, I was nervous about the new surroundings here, however, after I got here, everything was just perfect. The staffs are so nice here and they always help me when I am in need. I always feel like I am within a family in Maximo and every time I ask a question, the staffs will always answer directly about what I am wondering. Also, the host family is nice as well. My host mom always cooks delicious dinner and takes care of me just like I'm her kid. The volunteering program in Ositos is amazing as well. The kids are so passionate and friendly, and the teachers are kind too. Every time when I saw the smiles from the kids, I am always so joyful and it is so unforgettable. Overall, everything here in Costa Rica is wonderful for me, and I hope I could travel back again in upcoming years.

When I was planning to travel alone for the first time, I wasn't sure how to organise it. I am so glad I decided to volunteer with Maximo Nivel and especially glad that I picked the child care program. Having the language school as a base allowed me to make so many new friends, take Spanish lessons and gave me security that I might not have felt otherwise. The team were so helpful even after I finished my project and I never felt afraid to ask for help. Working with the kids was an eye-opening experience where you really felt the day to day impact you were making. It can be daunting but everyone is so friendly and just wants you to take initiative and help out - you get out what you put in. If you are nervous about travelling alone for the first time this is the perfect way to make a difference, feel supported but also have total freedom and flexibility to see and do all of the normal things you would do whilst travelling. I can't recommend it enough!

My time volunteering at a childcare center through Maximo Nivel has been incredible! It was my first time leaving the United States, and my first time traveling, and the office and staff made me feel so safe and supported. I was SO nervous before coming here, but after being here for a month already I have already extended my stay and am planning my next trip with Maximo. Staying with a host family was so incredible, and I met so many amazing people from all over the world. If you are looking to go abroad, take Spanish lessons, or intern, CHOOSE MAXIMO!!!!! There are so many volunteer companies online that it can feel so overwhelming but this is your sign to go abroad with Maximo you literally will not regret it I promise.

I was not nervous leading up to this trip until the moment I woke up on the first day. Waking up at 6am, my stomach turned with butterflies, and my mind raced with doubt. “What have I done?! I’m in Costa Rica for 2 weeks, and I know not a soul. What if I don’t make friends? What if this isn’t what I expected? What if my host family is rude/unclean/etc?” These worries were laid to rest the second I stepped onto the maximo nivel campus. I see a wonderful group of smiling staff, and many of the volunteers are in the same boat (traveling solo). Both weeks of the trip (holiday program and working with children) were fantastic, but if one can only do one week, I’d recommend the holiday program. Being that all of the volunteers and field managers were together each day at the same time led to a tight knit group like no other. These were friends that I had known for a week, but felt like I had known for 2 years. Each day of volunteering was rewarding. I was able to make a noticeable difference (albeit a small one) in communities which are so much less fortunate than us. Seeing an elderly man with no family smiling and dancing as we came in will forever be in my memory. Seeing the murals in the park that we finished gives me chills as I look back. Being able to have kids, who come from nothing, smile and hug and play because YOU came to them and did something, is a feeling of reward like no other. I once again must stress that this experience was maybe the best 2 weeks of my entire life. I can’t help but tear up with melancholic joy as I reminisce on this time. To maximo nivel, to the field managers (Natalie, I’m looking at you), to the friends I made, to my lovely host mom (yamileth), I thank you.

Ademas, el equipo de Máximo Nivel fue increíble y te ayudan a lo largo del proceso a entender la cultura y el programa, ofreciendo consejos de como puedes sacar el mayor provecho de tu tiempo en el pais. I spent two weeks in Costa Rica volunteering with Maximo Nivel on the Childcare project and living with a host family. My family was extremely welcoming and always offered suggestions on what to do around the area. We had clean bathrooms, great food, and a lot of fun together. The Solano family made me feel like I was at home away from home. Maximo Nivel also did a great job of introducing me to the leaders at my project and made sure that I had all that I needed. They even offered salsa and cooking classes so that I could learn some new skills and meet the other volunteers. I learned a lot during my time volunteering with Maximo Nivel in Costa Rica, and I would not hesitate to go back again!

Going into this journey, I wanted to appreciate what I have more in life and really see what it’s like being in these kids footsteps. These kids live in impoverished areas around Costa Rica and some of them come from broken homes who can’t afford child care. To be honest, I don’t think I’ve taught these kids as much as they’ve taught me. Every day walking in, these kids run up to you and show you so much love and affection. It’s sad to think this could be what they are lacking in and appreciate it so much when they get it. They don’t have much in life, but they don’t let that take anything away from them. They appreciate the little things they do have in life and that’s what really makes me happy. Very blessed and thankful for being on this amazing adventure.

This experience was life changing! I spent the mornings with loving, playful and well organized children. Not knowing Spanish did not even phase our interaction. They communicate with love, hugs and mucho smiles! In the afternoon I practiced my Spanish with an amazing instructor. Our field trip helped me with connecting the words which finally made sense. I am truly grateful for this amazing, timely experience! Giving back has always been a part of my life and I am grateful Maximo Nivel provides a superb, well organized platform for memories of a lifetime!

Impactful experience, administrative concerns

The childcare program was my third experience at a project with Maximo Nivel and by far the one I felt most impactful at and needed. The children can really light up your world with their energy and excitement as they do not often see people from outside of their community. Being a male was definitely a plus for these children because they rarely have a father figure at home and they yearn for that approval, love, and attention from older males. It was truly a blessing for me to be able to provide that and I leave the program eagerly wishing I could give more time and energy to the children. The staff at the project was professional and appreciative. Maximo Nivel provided a great field manager by the name of Samuel who was attentive to the needs of volunteers. When first arriving, however, I wish I could have had more communication from Maximo in terms of specifics of where I was going and where I was living. Other than wishing for more contact (not necessarily asking how I was doing but giving me important information about things that a nonspanish speaking foreigner would need to know) I had an excellent experience with the childcare project.

My time at Maximo Nivel was short but extremely rewarding! The staff at Maximo really care and try to help you with anything you need. The project placement was perfect for me; I loved every single moment being there. The staff at my childcare project placement were extremely nice and patient; they love that you are here to help them out. The children are so intelligent and funny; they loved playing soccer and doing arts/crafts with us volunteers. Coming into this project I thought I would be mainly helping them with their English but they also helped me with my Spanish. I could feel the impact I was making on the kids and how I was helping out the community. overall, this program was life-changing and I will carry this experience with everywhere I go!

These past two weeks have been the most challenging yet amazing two weeks of my life. The first two days were the hardest but being at Maximo and around the people made me feel at home. I did childcare and I look forward to it everyday, it is the most reward experience. Being able to be part of something and knowing you're making a difference even if it's in the smallest way, it's an amazing feeling. Their smiles, little personalities, it made my day every day. Seeing the kids everyday, talking to the staff, it's a feeling I can't explain If you're thinking about doing the program and are still unsure, I say do it, you will definitely challenge yourself but it is the greatest feeling. You will create bonds and learn about yourself. Push yourself outside your comfort zone and do it, I have zero regret. Pura vida!

I volunteered to do childcare for a week in Costa Rica and the experience was incredible! I am studying to be a teacher and love traveling! I've never been to Costa Rica, nor have I spoken Spanish with anybody before, but I've found myself enjoying every day out here and learning so much! Being around the locals, Maximo Nivel staff, and my host family has increased my Spanish speaking skills tremendously. By the end of the trip, I've felt quite comfortable venturing out on my own ordering food, exploring the city, and finding fun things to do. The kids were wicked nice and taught me so much I can take home with me. They helped me with my Spanish and we played a lot of soccer!

I had the opportunity to work in childcare for four weeks in a town just outside of San Jose. I can confidently say that these few weeks have made one of the best months of my life. I was able to make strong connections and relationships with everyone at the childcare. I truly felt comfortable and appreciated while I was there. I was introduced to this program through Maximo Nivel. I have come to feel like Maximo Nivel in Costa Rica is a second home. Not only did I learn and take away a lot but I also made amazing friendships with other volunteers and the staff here. The staff was always able to help me with anything and put a smile on my face. In total, I would recommend Maximo Nivel and the childcare project to anyone of any background and any age. I think everyone can benefit from learning about other cultures, ways of life, languages, etc. You will never remember staying at home and not taking the opportunity to work with kids from a totally different community but you will remember the wonderful stay you had at an amazing project and the equally as amazing staff to support you through anything. Live your life to the Maximo!

I came to Costa Rica with a basic knowledge of the Spanish language. I have been taking Spanish Classes through Maximo Nivel in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica for over a month now and my Spanish has improved so much. I am now able to listen and understand a native speaker and hold a conversation in Spanish. Thank you Maximo Nivel!

I had an amazing two weeks here in Costa Rica. I felt supported, my host family was wonderful, and I made some amazing friends. Volunteering with the children was so rewarding and such an invaluable experience. I would 100% reccomend Maximo Nivel if you are looking into going abroad.

Couldn't have asked for a better or more gracious kids or teachers to work with! Staff was amazing and welcoming and the people in here are some of the kindest in the world. Definitely plan on coming back, hopefully more than once!

It was a great experience. I learned a lot of spanish and about the costa rican culture. I helped kids in a daycare and received a humbling experience that I will always remember. I taught the kids about exercise and different sports as well as english and mathematics. I was placed in a well funded daycare that was run by nuns, so I got to experience the religious structure as well. Everyone at Maximo is very knowledgeable and helpful with anything that the volunteers need, and this is the most valuable perk of the program. They tell you what to expect, where to go for whatever you need, and tips on things to look out for to stay safe or blend into the culture more.

Maximo Nivel was an amazingly organized experience. I had nothing planned when I left for Costa Rica, and they took care of everything: housing, transportation and the placement of the volunteer project of your choice. There are so many travellers that go alone from all over the world that there will always be someone at Maximo to go on adventures with. I vounteered in Carpio, and it was a life changing experience. They place you in situtaions that really allow you to feel like you are making an impact on the community you are involved in. I had an great experience, and I would recommend this program to anyone.

This prog...
