Blue Scool intern (EPIC)

I went to Namibia to intern at the Blue School in September 2025, not really knowing what I would find or if I would like it. Transport from the airport was arranged for me, and when I walked into the school, I was surrounded by smiles and welcoming staff and children. It was an amazing experience; to me, it felt like a place where, if you have a good (or bad) idea, you are allowed to carry it out and you will receive help with it. Because the school is quite small, you know everybody by name. The environment is beautiful, with lots of nature, wildlife, and an ocean to swim in. The town is really small; it has a harbor, one gym, two supermarkets, and a few bars. I never felt unsafe walking around in town, but I do think that at night it is best to avoid certain areas. In my spare time, I went clubbing, and you can rent or borrow a car to go camping and exploring; I also surfed and rode my bike. For me it was a great experience and, besides all the fun I had and the friends I made, it was super educational learning from another culture and working with different people.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to all the most common questions about Luderitz Blue School.

What will I do as a Water Sports Coach Intern in Namibia?

You'll coach students in sailing and/or rowing, run weekly club sessions, and organise training camps and events. This is a rare opportunity to coach on the South Atlantic Ocean — our students are motivated and ready to go further. Alongside water sports, you'll contribute to extracurricular activities and wider school life throughout your time here.

Where will I be staying in Luderitz?

Accommodation is provided in one of Luderitz's historic buildings — a boarding house or guesthouse — all within walking distance of school. Expect a close community atmosphere, and stunning views of the South Atlantic coast.

Is Luderitz safe for international interns?

Namibia is one of the safest countries in Africa, and Luderitz is one of its safest towns — a small, close-knit community with very low crime. There is no malaria or tropical disease risk, and the South Atlantic keeps the climate mild year-round: never too hot, never too cold.

What will I do in my free time in Luderitz?

Luderitz is a nature-lover's dream — flamingos, springbok, oryx, and the elusive brown hyena on your doorstep. Visit the ghost town of Kolmanskop, take a boat trip to Shearwater Bay's kelp forest, or brave the (cold) South Atlantic. Enjoy camping, hiking, braais with colleagues, or a night out at the local bars. During school breaks, many interns road trip through the Namib. There is nowhere else like it on Earth.

Who is eligible for this internship?

Open to adults of any age and all nationalities. Well suited to RYA or equivalent qualified coaches, sports science or outdoor education graduates, experienced competitive sailors or rowers, and retired athletes with a passion for coaching. A recognised water sports qualification is preferred but not always essential — what matters most is water confidence, coaching ability, and a love of the ocean.
