Program Overview

World Internship Project interns spend 1-3 months working with LEX in Japan while living with a host family and absorbing the rhythms of daily life. They immerse themselves in the Japanese language and many other languages through the LEX/Hippo Family Club – community-based language clubs at the heart of our programs. Key characteristics of a LEX intern are flexibility and an openness toward all languages and all people.

Enthusiastic participation in language clubs and serving as a cultural and friendship ambassador will be key components of the internship. Other activities will depend on the intern's interests and skills, as well as the needs of the hosting organization. These might include language club promotion, cultural presentations, and administrative work. Interns must be flexible and ready to jump into new tasks and activities.

Any flexible, curious person (age 18-99 at the time of application) with a genuine interest in LEX may be eligible to intern with LEX in Japan.

The best year in Japan

This program is absolutely amazing! I have had the time of my life here in Japan! As I lived with host families I am fully submerge within Japanese culture. Although this internship is physically in Japan, it feels a lot more global than that. The heart of this organization is worldwide. Working in an exchange student/ language learning organization I have been lucky to meet people from all over the world, make world-wide connections, and gain a huge appreciation for languages and other cultures. I am able to challenge myself every single day; to learn something new about work, the world, and myself every day. Everyday is a new adventure, and you can make this experience anything you want and get anything you want out of it. Everyone in this organization is so open-minded, and unbelievably kind; there are so many opportunities to make friends and lifetime connections with people. Besides the amazing organization to work in, living in Japan, learning the culture, history, being able to travel and eat the amazing food is a huge bonus!

Truly a life changing opportunity

The year I spent in Japan through LEX was the best year of my life. The program was very well organized, and I felt safe, comfortable, and engaged the entire time I was there. The best thing about this program was the people I met. I went to Japan in 2012, but I still stay in contact with many of my LEX-Japan friends in 2019. Learning the Japanese language and culture, making friends, travelling around Japan, and interning in a Japanese office was truly a wonderful experience that I am very glad I had. I wholeheartedly recommend LEX to anyone interested in Japan, languages, and a life changing experience!
