Medical Assistant in a Liberian Refugee Camp in Ghana

This experience is focused on students and qualified professionals specializing in medicine, nursing, or pharmacy to provide much-needed help at Jikwel Health Centre—a hospital within a refugee camp. They mainly need general practitioners, gynecologists, ophthalmologists, and psychologists. The program is available throughout the year. Volunteers support the local staff, completing tasks assigned based on experience and knowledge. Patients typically include drug addicts, illiterate and poor people, teen moms, pregnant women, and those with sickle cell anemia. The most common diseases are malaria, typhoid fever, HIV, cellulitis, anemia, sickle cell disease, hypertension, diabetes, and gastroenteritis.
