CRNA & Pre-AA Anesthesia Internships Abroad | IMA

Program Overview
Shadow anesthesia teams in IMA’s teaching hospital placements in Kenya and Peru. This educational program welcomes pre-CRNA and pre-anesthesiologist assistant (pre-AA) undergraduates, nursing and nurse anesthesia students, nurses, and licensed CRNAs.
Observe how clinicians assess patients before surgery, monitor them during procedures, manage pain and hand over care in recovery. Case access depends on the hospital, patient consent and your preparation. Students observe under supervision and do not administer anesthesia, manage airways or perform procedures. Your Program Mentor confirms the placement and available departments, including anesthesia access in Peru.
Outside the hospital, join clinical simulations, global health lectures and community health education. Discuss the decisions you observe with mentors and learn how local teams provide care with the equipment and resources available. IMA’s award-winning healthcare programs include pre-departure preparation, clinical mentorship and 24/7 staff support. The experience can inform future training choices or professional development; it does not replace required critical-care nursing experience.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to all the most common questions about International Medical Aid (IMA).
Who can apply for the CRNA and pre-AA program?
Pre-CRNA and pre-AA undergraduates, nursing students, nurse anesthesia students, nurses and licensed CRNAs can apply. Admission includes an application and interview. Prior clinical experience can help but is not required for undergraduate applicants. High-school students should use IMA’s separate high-school program.
What will I observe, and what is my role?
IMA’s CRNA and anesthesia internships focus on supervised observation of anesthesia care. You may see preoperative assessment, monitoring and recovery handovers. Students do not administer drugs, manage airways or perform procedures. Licensed participants also follow host rules; this is an educational placement rather than a clinical staff role.
What does a typical program day include?
Weekdays combine hospital observation with time to discuss cases and clinical decisions. Global health lectures, simulations, community clinics and health education round out the program. The hospital schedule and available cases determine each day’s activities. IMA’s program overview explains how these learning components fit together.
What mentorship and preparation will I receive?
A Program Mentor helps you prepare and set learning goals before departure. Orientation introduces the local health system, placement routines and professional expectations. Clinical mentors help you discuss what you observe and connect it with your studies or career plans. Read about IMA’s mentorship and learning model.
How does IMA support safety and wellbeing abroad?
IMA provides orientation, secure residences, program transport, and 24/7 local and U.S.-based support. Staff help with everyday concerns and emergencies. IMA reports a 100% safety rating on its safety and security page, which explains its supervision, transport and emergency arrangements.
Where will I live, and what is daily life like?
You share IMA-arranged accommodation with other interns, with meals, Wi-Fi and transport to placements. Living together gives you time to compare observations and prepare for the next day. IMA’s program residences page describes accommodation. Cultural activities introduce local history and daily life; optional major excursions cost extra.
Where can I go, for how long, and in which language?
Kenya offers 2–12 weeks year-round, with English used in placements. Peru has fixed 2–4-week sessions and requires at least two years of Spanish study. Anesthesia access in Peru must be confirmed with your Program Mentor. Check the CRNA program page for the country-specific learning options and current availability.
Will these hours count toward CRNA or AA school requirements?
IMA can document your placement and hours, but each school decides what qualifies. An overseas observational placement does not replace required critical-care nursing experience for CRNA admission. Check your target program’s requirements before enrolling. IMA’s anesthesia shadowing guidance explains the distinction.
What are the program costs and payment arrangements?
The two-week Program Fee is US$3,995, plus a separate US$995 Program Deposit (US$4,990 combined). Longer stays cost more. Program dates and fees explain inclusions and additional expenses. The deposit is nonrefundable; payment plans and conditional Program Fee refunds follow IMA’s payment and cancellation terms.
Are donations and Program Fees tax-deductible in the U.S.?
International Medical Aid is a registered U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit. For U.S. taxpayers, qualifying charitable contributions may be deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law. Program Fees and participation-related expenses have separate tax considerations. Consult a qualified tax professional about your eligibility.
