High School Medical & Healthcare Internships Abroad | IMA

Program Overview
Explore medicine and public health through International Medical Aid’s supervised healthcare internships for high-school students in Kenya and Peru. Observe doctors and clinical teams during consultations, department rounds and patient care, with activities matched to your preparation and the host hospital’s requirements. Available departments may include general medicine, pediatrics, emergency care, surgery and women’s health.
Clinical simulations and global health lectures give you a place to ask questions and connect classroom science with the care you observe. Learn about health disparities, infectious disease, and maternal and child health. Community outreach introduces health education on topics such as hygiene and nutrition, while cultural activities help you understand the communities around your placement.
IMA’s award-winning healthcare programs include pre-departure preparation, clinical mentorship and 24/7 staff support. Mentors help you reflect on your experiences and consider future college and pre-health study. Students learn alongside local professionals through observation and supervised activities, without providing independent patient care.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to all the most common questions about International Medical Aid (IMA).
Who is this program for, and what is the minimum age?
High-school students ages 14+ who are considering medicine, public health or another healthcare field can apply. You do not need to have chosen a specialty. IMA’s high-school medical internships provide a supervised learning pathway, with activities matched to your age, preparation and placement requirements.
What will I observe, and will I treat patients?
You shadow doctors and healthcare teams, observe patient consultations and learn about different departments. Simulations let you discuss clinical situations in a teaching setting. Any supporting tasks are supervised and suited to your preparation. Students do not diagnose, treat patients independently or take the place of trained staff. Read the high-school program overview.
What will I learn outside the hospital?
Global health lectures cover topics such as infectious disease, maternal and child health, and barriers to care. Community outreach introduces hygiene and nutrition education. Cultural activities and language learning help you understand life beyond the hospital. IMA’s learning model connects these activities with the observations you discuss with mentors.
What mentorship and preparation will I receive?
A Program Mentor helps you prepare and set learning goals before departure. Orientation introduces the local health system, placement routines and professional expectations. Clinical mentors help you discuss what you observe and connect it with your studies or career plans. Read about IMA’s mentorship and learning model.
How are students supported, and can families reach staff?
IMA provides orientation, secure shared residences, program transport and 24/7 local support, with a U.S.-based contact for families. Students can ask staff for help with everyday concerns and emergencies. IMA reports a 100% safety rating on its safety and security page, which describes these arrangements.
Where will I live, and what is daily life like?
You share IMA-arranged accommodation with other interns, with meals, Wi-Fi and transport to placements. Living together gives you time to compare observations and prepare for the next day. IMA’s program residences page describes accommodation. Cultural activities introduce local history and daily life; optional major excursions cost extra.
Where can I go, and when are programs available?
IMA’s high-school program lists Kenya and Peru. Kenya placements can last 2–12 weeks; Peru uses fixed 2–4-week summer and winter sessions in Cusco. Your mentor confirms the location, dates and available rotations. Check program dates and fees for current sessions and discuss your school calendar when applying.
How can this support college applications or academic credit?
Clinical observation, community outreach and mentor discussions give you specific experiences to reflect on when choosing a college or pre-health path. Ask your school about credit before enrolling. Completion documentation, recommendations and alumni services follow IMA’s completion and evaluation requirements; participation does not guarantee admission.
What are the program costs and payment arrangements?
The two-week Program Fee is US$3,995, plus a separate US$995 Program Deposit (US$4,990 combined). Longer stays cost more. Program dates and fees explain inclusions and additional expenses. The deposit is nonrefundable; payment plans and conditional Program Fee refunds follow IMA’s payment and cancellation terms.
Are donations and Program Fees tax-deductible in the U.S.?
International Medical Aid is a registered U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit. For U.S. taxpayers, qualifying charitable contributions may be deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law. Program Fees and participation-related expenses have separate tax considerations. Consult a qualified tax professional about your eligibility.
