A life-changing experience

The IFSA-Butler program at the University of Havana in Cuba is special because of the independence and freedom it gives students. Being thrown into the thick of classes and the Cuban education system after a short orientation gives you the opportunity to get a real sense of the differences in administrative and academic approaches that define UH.
Classes at UH are immersive and broad in their approach to contemporary and global issues. The unique perspectives of professors are shaped by living in a country where history and politics are lived experiences on a daily basis. This presents a challenge to students looking for a conventional academic experience, but offers exciting opportunities for innovation to fearless ones.
IFSA-Butler's program has amazing housing opportunities in the heart of Vedado (close to world-class entertainment and beaches) just a 5-minute walk from the University. The program's organized excursions to Vinales and Santiago de Cuba give students a broader feel for the different regions that make up the island. The program's partnership with anthropological organizations and ecotourism projects in the countryside make for exciting research opportunities also.

Overall, an amazing experience. Cuba with IFSA-Butler will change your life.

What a great semester!

My experience studying abroad was exceptional! For someone who had never traveled outside the US (except to Canada) and only ever with my parents, I was terrified to spend a semester far away from home and with so many unknowns. However, IFSA-Butler helped alleviate many of my concerns; the Resident Director was very engaged and living so close to her and everyone on my program made a new city feel a bit more like home. IFSA-Butler organizes several trips outside Havana, and I really appreciated having the option to travel and learn more about the culture. I had very little idea of what to expect from my semester abroad but the unknowns were such an integral part of my personal learning and growing experience.
