London hasn't seen the last of Me!

September 17, 2020by: Lauryn Dove - United StatesProgram: IFSA SOAS, University of London Partnership

I had trouble determining if IFSA at SOAS was the right program for me. All of these doubts, however, dissipated quickly once I began to receive the pre-departure materials and resources well before the start of the program. The depth and specificity that these materials provided gave me the security to know that even if I had somehow made a mistake in choosing an appropriate program, the dedication that IFSA demonstrated to providing support so early on gave me peace of mind. The unbelievable growth I underwent during my time abroad has already manifested itself countless times since my departure last December. One of the most profound changes I experienced was seeing how different the Black British experience was when compared to my own as a Black American. It was amazing to content with other members of the African Diaspora and connect in many ways, but also learn from our differences. My time abroad transformed my professional aspirations of being a teacher. In interacting with methods of learning and teaching so different from my own at SOAS, I was inspired to think bigger when it comes to practicing accessible and creative educating that does not sacrifice efficacy. The personal growth I experienced abroad truly opened the world up to me. Having never resided in a city, the thought of doing so made me incredibly nervous. Learning how to navigate such foreign environments will undoubtedly expand the experiences I am willing to engage with. I have more faith in my ability to prevail in challenging circumstances and transform the spaces I enter.

The transformation of my life in every sense of the word!

Choosing IFSA and studying abroad at SOAS was, singlehandedly, the best decision I've ever made in my life. Some of the previous participants and the study abroad advisers at my college suggested IFSA would be the best fit for me. Studying in London incorporated a busy urban environment with a highly competent academic setting. In this stressful environment, IFSA was instrumental in providing support and ensuring that participants, most of us from small liberal arts colleges, survived in London. I've always felt constrained on a small campus so being in London allowed me to breathe and become involved in so many different and wonderful opportunities. London is a great place to discover yourself and your identity. SOAS was the most diverse and involved community I have ever been a part of. Students are very involved and dedicated to their causes, the SOAS bar is usually bustling with life and debates. At the same time, students face high academic expectations. So, that they can continue learning and improving whilst abroad. All in all, if you want to be challenged and transformed, choose IFSA and SOAS!

SOAS study abroad with IFSA-Butler

Studying abroad at SOAS with IFSA-Butler was amazing! IFSA helped me get settled and figure everything out and SOAS was a great school to study at! The academics and social life were great, but the student housing left a little to be desired.
