Musculoskeletal Ageing: Osteoporosis, Sarcopenia & Falls
Program Overview
Musculoskeletal health is a key determinant of mobility, independence, and quality of life, yet osteoporosis and sarcopenia remain major contributors to frailty, falls, and loss of function.
This interdisciplinary, field-based course examines the biological and physiological mechanisms of osteoporosis and sarcopenia, together with approaches to assessment, prevention, and management. Students explore the roles of nutrition, physical activity, rehabilitation, and medical management in maintaining bone and muscle health and reducing fall risk.
Athens serves as a living learning environment where rehabilitation medicine, Mediterranean nutrition, healthy ageing, and wellness practices intersect. The course combines classroom instruction, specialist-led sessions, applied workshops, case-based learning, a rehabilitation-center visit, and a thermal wellness field study, enabling students to connect academic knowledge with real-world practices.
Developed and delivered by the Hellenic Center for Interdisciplinary Studies and Research (HCISR) in Greece, the program provides U.S. academic credit through Arcadia University, which serves as the School of Record.
