Caregiving, Chronic Illness and Community Health
Program Overview
Chronic illness is a growing challenge in ageing societies, affecting not only individuals but also families, caregivers, communities, and health systems.
This interdisciplinary, field-based course examines how long-term illness is managed across family, community, and healthcare settings. Students explore dementia, mobility limitations, and other non-communicable diseases, while considering caregiver burden, quality of life, social support, and community-based approaches to care.
Athens serves as a living learning environment where family caregiving, community health, social care, and ageing intersect. The course combines seminars, case-based learning, specialist-led sessions, and supervised visits to dementia support initiatives, residential care settings, and community health organizations, enabling students to connect academic knowledge with real-world caregiving practices.
Developed and delivered by the Hellenic Center for Interdisciplinary Studies and Research (HCISR) in Greece, the program provides U.S. academic credit through Arcadia University, which serves as the School of Record.
