My time abroad was definitely a worthwhile experience. I was able to watch surgeries in person, that I would never have been able to see back home in America unless I was a medical student. I had a good time learning and being able to observe medical expertise from trained physicians.
This was an amazing experience of a lifetime

This was an amazing experience of a lifetime. I learned a lot about African Wildlife Conservation and met a lot of amazing people from all around the world. The staff were more than welcoming and we've since become friends on social media. I did a 3 day rhino tracking excision which was more than I could have hoped for. My love for rhinos has blossomed 10 fold. I would have never left if I didn't have to. South Africa has won over my heart. I will be back again in the next year.

Best decision ever!

Before arriving in India I was super nervous about the trip, having heard a lot of stories about how dangerous it is etc. I arrived in India a day earlier than the road trip began, so I booked my own accomodation for the night, and even that day I was feeling quite scared. However, when I met my coordinator the next day I immediately felt reassured, and ended up having the most amazing 4 weeks! The road trip was very well planned, and all the coordinators were fantastic. While some of the accomodation was not the best (e.g. lots of ants, dirty/stained sheets), the experience was so great overall that it didn't even impact the experience. We were looked after so well throughout the trip, and never once felt unsafe, despite all the stories. The coordinators were also very knowledgeable about all the places we visited, and gave us a lot of history/background information which was nice. Overall the journey was fantastic, and I would 100% recommend everyone to do it if they get the chance!

A newfound perspective on life
Submitted by Joe Iacovazzi - Des Moines United States | January 10, 2018
I am not your traditional 'student' on school leave, or a recent high school graduate taking time off to explore. I am a 32 year old working professional who took vacation and personal time away from "office life" in search for a new perspective... and did I ever find it!
Serving the sea turtle wildlife refuge in Camaronal afforded me the opportunity to not only assist with monitoring the turtle hatchery and liberation of baby turtles to the sea, but to also meet volunteers from all over the world, continue to use/improve my knowledge and speaking of the Spanish language, and, most importantly, taking time to reflect on just how big this world is and what more I can do to serve. Each day I treated as a new "stop on my journey" to perspective. What I mean by 'perspective' is that I have focused the last 10 years of my life on work, work, work... to the point where I rarely took advantage of time off to travel or embark on outside hobbies and interests. I lived and breathed a work-work balance as opposed to a work-life balance. I finally recognized this was not healthy and that a change was desperately needed to regain control of my life. Giving of myself, both physically and mentally, as well as my time to serve a greater cause opened up my eyes and heart to a whole world that needs my kind of service. From the first day to the last day at the Camaronal project, the smile on my face you see in the pictures never faded! I came back to the States feeling much more relaxed and calm, and have found myself reflecting and giving thanks each day before I ever get to the office.
For those mid-year career professionals who find themselves in a similar 'funk' that I found myself in, remember it is NEVER EVER too late to seek out a whole new perspective on life, however that may be. In my case, it was removing myself from my natural, comfortable element and giving myself to serve a greater cause. I am so excited I took this opportunity and plan to see out additional service projects annually!

Overall the road trip was fantastic. We covered so much and got to see such a diverse range of places in India. The local support team were incredible and we were very well looked after the entire trip. I am so grateful to everyone that helped make it such a memorable trip. I would definitely love to do something similar in the future.
