Expedition in Vietnam
by Globe Aware
Program Overview
Hoi An draws visitors to its lovingly preserved mix of Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, and French architecture – evidence of the town's fascinating past as a major trading port. Hoi An's quarter features traditional shophouses, the facades of which are made from carved ironwood. The officially Socialist government, run by the Communist party, has made recent reforms that open the economy for trade and some building wealth. Volunteers will see, however, that the old and new Revolutions have left many rural peasants behind in their idealism of minimum living standards. Our projects help these people.
Volunteers, depending on the number of participants per group, engage in a variety of projects:
- teaching English pronunciation and colloquialisms
- building playgrounds and better homes to replace substandard housing
- refurbishing buildings for use as schools
- working on kindergarten and primary schools
- improving village markets and other infrastructure
All these help to raise the standards of living throughout rural Vietnam. Kindergartens are not currently funded by the Vietnamese government, so assistance is needed to maintain and improve schools.
