Program Overview

Join GCAC in Costa Rica and experience service, learning, and the vibrant spirit of Pura Vida in one of Latin America’s most biodiverse regions. This immersive program combines meaningful volunteer work with exploration and cultural connection.

Your primary service project will take place at the Costa Rica Animal Rescue Center, where you’ll support wildlife rehabilitation and rescue efforts. The work is hands-on and impactful, contributing directly to animal welfare and environmental care.

Outside of volunteering, you’ll explore Costa Rica’s natural beauty—relaxing on beaches, hiking through lush jungles, and swimming beneath waterfalls. These adventures are part of the experience and help deepen your understanding of the country’s culture and environment.

Participants can also take or audit a self-paced online course, Global Service-Learning and Citizenship, which offers insight into global and local issues. The course is available for transferable college credit and supports GCAC’s mission to develop globally aware, service-driven leaders.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to all the most common questions about Global Citizen Adventure Corps.

How safe is travel to Costa Rica?

Safety is our top priority in Costa Rica. Preparation begins before departure, as we monitor local conditions and stay in close contact with our trusted in-country partners. We work alongside local experts, stay in safe, vetted accommodations, and our trained staff is prepared to respond to any situation. Participants travel as part of a group, ensuring no one is ever alone during the experience.

What if I don’t speak Spanish well, or at all?

No problem! You don’t need to know Spanish to participate. We’ll have translators, and many locals speak English. Learn a few phrases before you go and then get ready. You’ll get lots of smiles for your efforts. For those learning Spanish, traveling to Costa Rica means you’ll enjoy speaking in the heart language of Ticos (people of Costa Rica) and learning more about Pura Vida!

What kind of volunteer work will I do in Costa Rica?

You’ll support wildlife care at the Costa Rica Animal Rescue Center, helping with feeding, cleaning, and rehabilitation tasks. You may also explore permaculture farming and sustainability practices.

Is this program good for first-time travelers?

Yes! The program is beginner-friendly and fully supported. GCAC provides lodging, meals, and transport, and experienced staff guide you every step of the way for a safe and enriching trip.

What if I don’t know anyone else going—will I fit in?

Many participants come without knowing anyone, and by the end of the trip, you’ll feel like part of a team.
