Duke in Berlin, founded in 1988 at Freie Universität (FU) Berlin just before the fall of the Berlin Wall, offers students the chance to study at one of Germany’s top universities while receiving dedicated support from Duke on-site staff. Whether you’re starting German from scratch or building on advanced coursework, this program is designed for all language levels. Beginners can start the language from scratch, while advanced students continue building proficiency through immersive coursework and daily life in Berlin. With courses in German language, culture, literature, business, art history, and more – plus the opportunity to enroll directly at FU – Berlin becomes both your campus and your classroom.

Begin with Duke-supported language courses, then transition into classes at a German university (options in English and German).
Personal support abroad. On-site Duke staff guide you academically and culturally throughout the program.
Internship opportunities. Eligible students can pursue academic or non-academic internships to gain professional experience in a major European hub.
Extended spring semester option allows students to complete up to six courses.
