The Center for Eco-Cultural Studies (CES) is dedicated to exploring and preserving the intricate balance between nature and culture. Our primary mission is to conduct comparative eco-cultural studies to develop sustainable resource management practices that benefit both traditional agricultural communities and the natural environment across Sri Lanka. Our research focuses on fostering community participation and collaboration to prevent habitat degradation, particularly within wildlife-protected areas, and to address the growing demand for forestlands and combat wildlife crime. CES' main Field research station and interpretation center is strategically located near the Sigiriya Wildlife Sanctuary and the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is close to the Minneriya-Giritale Nature Reserve and National Park. CES also manages 2 other field research bases bordering Yala National Park and the World Heritage Site and in Kala Vava, a proposed National Park. Our vision: To be a leading center of excellence in eco-cultural research and sustainable development, fostering harmonious coexistence between human communities and the natural environment in Sri Lanka and beyond.
