Transform Lives: Volunteer with 300 Rescue Dogs in Crete
Program Overview
We are Bronx Familia Animal Shelter, located on the beautiful island of Crete, Greece, where we care for over 300 rescued dogs who have been given a second chance at life. Many of our dogs were rescued from streets or difficult situations where they faced hunger, abuse, or neglect. Here, they enjoy a safe and loving home.
Our shelter relies on passionate volunteers to help with daily care, feeding, cleaning, and socializing the dogs — an essential part of their rehabilitation. They also assist with maintenance and other projects, such as building dog houses, improving enclosures, and helping around the shelter.
Life at the shelter is physically demanding but incredibly rewarding, offering hands-on experience in animal care, shelter management, and rescue work. Accommodation and basic groceries are provided, and volunteers have the opportunity to form deep connections with our affectionate and playful dogs.
If you are flexible, patient, and love animals, joining us at Bronx Familia is a chance to make a real difference, help rehabilitate dogs in need, and experience the beauty of Crete while contributing to a meaningful mission.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to all the most common questions about Bronx Familia Animal Shelter.
What will I be doing as a volunteer?
You will help with feeding, cleaning, and socializing our 300 rescue dogs. Socialization is key to their rehabilitation. Volunteers may also assist with shelter projects, such as building doghouses, improving enclosures, and general maintenance.
How long are shifts and what is a typical day like?
Working with 300 dogs is time-consuming, and they need care and attention both day and night! Feeding and cleaning usually take 2–4 hours a day, but volunteers are welcome to spend additional time with the dogs, and we encourage you to do so. Life at the shelter is flexible — after the main tasks, you can socialize, help with projects, or simply spend time with the animals whenever needed.
Do I need prior experience with dogs?
No prior experience is necessary! We welcome all volunteers who are patient, caring, and willing to learn. You’ll gain hands-on experience and guidance from our team.
What accommodation and meals are provided?
Volunteers stay on-site in shared dormitory-style accommodation. Basic groceries are provided, but volunteers prepare their own meals. Cooking facilities and basic supplies are available, and you can bring special ingredients if needed.
Is the program physically demanding?
Yes, caring for our dogs can be physically and emotionally demanding, including cleaning enclosures and helping with shelter projects. But it’s also incredibly rewarding, as your work directly improves the lives of the dogs.
