Spending time in Kisumu with Better Me was probably the most meaningful and formative experience for me. Amongst others, I had the opportunity to lead workshops at the Kisumu Children’s Remand Home and to prepare activities for children at the Korando Educational Center. During my second stay I wanted to gain insight into healthcare in a different setting and therfore I did a clinical orientation, which better me supported from the very beginning. Thanks to them I left with a much broader perspective, especially in an emotional way. Working alongside local healthcare professionals showed me how adaptable and thoughtful medical practice is when resources are limited. Beyond the clinical environment, everyday life in Kisumu itself had a strong impact on me. I was struck by the sense of community, the openness in conversations, and the warmth I experienced in daily interactions. All in all, better me left me with the feeling of having a second family on the other side of the world and with experiences that I will cherish forever. Asante !!!!

I‘m so glad I could do this program and on top of that, share it with 3 friends of mine from university. It was a magical and unforgettable time there, I already miss all the people, the kindness, the positivity, the laughter from the children, the funny and the not so funny moments together - everything about it! Being part of this family and having the chance to be in the middle of it all had a great impact on me. Seeing how the kids live there, but still being so positive and full of life, playing with them, eating chapati with them, learning how to cook the best meals and trying local food, going out with the other volunteers, to dunga beach or karaoke bar, going on little adventures together like a sunrise hill walk or to the Equator - it was all unbelievable. I also had the opportunity to do 2 weeks of clinical orientation in the Kisumu County Referral Hospital, which was a great experience for us as medical students from Austria. Talking with other students and doctors, seeing the procedures and operations done differently, and overall, the whole hospital and health care system was very interesting to see. Thanks to everyone for making this time unforgettable :)

Taking part in this program was an extraordinary experience that had a significant impact on me both personally and professionally. From the very beginning, I felt welcomed and included, and I quickly realized that this was going to be more than just a temporary involvement. It became a journey of personal growth, cultural exchange, teamwork, and self-discovery. Looking back, I can confidently say that the time I spent with this organization has shaped me in ways I could not have anticipated, and it is an experience I would wholeheartedly recommend to others. One of the aspects I appreciated most was the way the organization tailored projects to the individual strengths and interests of each participant. Instead of assigning tasks randomly, there was real thought given to where people could contribute most effectively and, at the same time, develop their own abilities. I was given the opportunity to work on different projects that challenged me to think creatively, solve problems, and take responsibility. This approach not only made me feel valued but also allowed me to explore areas I had never worked in before. It gave me the chance to step out of my comfort zone, while still feeling supported every step of the way.

I spent a few weeks volunteering with Better Me in Kenya in 2025, and it was one of the most memorable parts of my travels. The main thing I was doing was going to the Kisumu Remand Home, where I taught English grammar and writing. I also led yoga classes for kids who had never tried them before. Teaching 20+ kids without yoga mats may sound chaotic, but it forced me to get creative, and the kids' enthusiasm made up for it!! The kids were on break from school, so I imagine that the schedule was a bit calmer than usual. However, this allowed time to spend time with the kids at the center, and have some time for myself as well. This program is also an incredible way to get to know Kenya, which you won't see otherwise if you go to Maasai Mara and leave. The staff at Better Me are incredible. I don’t have words to describe how kind and supportive they were. Living arrangements were simple but comfortable, and the meals were healthy and filling. I heavily recommend this program!!

I spent one month with BetterMe. The team and the kids were amazing and the experience is unique. Molly’s cooking was delicious. As you have a lot of time for yourself, you will also get a taste of Kenya, especially on the weekends. The trips are organised from the Team, so you have no effort. Only thing to consider is the amount of spare time, it may be too much for some. Some days, there was nothing to do for the volunteers, so we had to look for something to do. As I am a teacher, I expected a little more to do.

In the beginning, I wasn’t sure if going to Kenya for a social project was the right decision. But from the very first call with Tom, I felt an instant sense of trust and warmth. I was welcomed with open arms and felt part of something meaningful right away. The experience truly changed my life — whether it was hearing the touching stories of the children, working on the streets, or speaking in schools. Every moment was deeply moving, and I always felt safe, supported, and cared for. I can wholeheartedly recommend this journey.

My daughter Jane went at Better Me for the thirth time and she asked me to come with her, I was hesistant at first but I'm so glad I went along. As a 50year old Belgian father, I was surprised by everything I saw on arriving in the African continent: another world opened my eyes, a culture shock! I don't have experience in education or teaching, so I proposed to help as a handyman. The first days I gave a helping hand to Lawrence by making concrete, installing doors and a new closet in the kitchen and while we worked, I made connection with the little boys and we played together...football, painting, coloring, hide and seek, catcher,...I made them laugh, they made me laugh...unforgettable those little faces! When they had to work in the garden, I was with them to help and little by little also the bigger boys opened up more and more. One day the bigger boys and girls guided me to hike up to the hill: a challinging walk with a beautifull view over Kisumu and Lake Victoria as a reward...I was one of them :)... In the evening when the boys went to sleep, I was not always sure: should I cry or laugh? As a father from the wealthy Europe I was effected by the situation buth finally I am convinced that despite the minimal comfort, these kids are doing well: they have education and school, they have good food, they receive love from the many employees and volunteers...they have a future, thanks to Better Me! A lot of thanks to my daughter Jane for taking me along and off course to Better Me for the big work they do everyday and for the unforgettable experience they gave to me. One day, I will be back! I had an incredible time during my three weeks at BetterMe, to teach, play, and learn from the children at the school was simply amazing! The support from the BetterMe team was amazing, they surely helped with making this time more fun, memorable, and entertaining! Looking back at this period, it greatly helped me with getting out of my comfort zone and becoming more confident in myself. Personally, I visited together with my girlfriend. It was a great experience to share together. For the solo travellers: they have a good intake process, and will let you know how many volunteers there will be at the time you plan to go.

I loved working with Better me even though I only worked there for 2 Weeks! I can only recommend helping them with the education and the integration of children in kisumu, it is a very fun but demanding experience which makes it more rewarding. I hope someday I can return after I am done with university :) I would really love to know how some kids have evolved in the Programm! My only problem would be the price since you are paying for voluntary work but I would say the great experience you will make makes up for most of it! (And your money supports all the amazing programs!)

I loved my stay there. From the activities we did to the people I met. The clinical orientation wasn’t what i expectet but I‘m glad I did it. Overall I had a lot of fun. I loved how all the people where openmindet and happy all the time. The kids where so sweet and I always was looking forward going to chapati night on thursday with them. The team was really nice to us as well and from the moment we met they wellcomed us to the familiy and you felt like a part of the group. Thank you for everything.

Volunteering with Better Me in Kisumu, Kenya, has been an experience I can highly recommend. I returned for a second time and immediately felt welcomed back into a familiar yet dynamic environment. Many activities, like the Art Class with the Korando kids or teaching at the Remand Home, were already known to me, but each day still brought something new. A highlight this year was helping at “Mama Ngyna,” where I supported with simple but meaningful tasks like feeding, dressing, or playing with the children. What stands out about Better Me is that volunteers are integrated into everyday life and contribute in ways that feel both practical and impactful. The work is varied, the atmosphere is supportive, and every visit offers valuable insights. For anyone considering volunteering, Better Me provides a structured yet flexible setting where small contributions can make a real difference.

I learned so much from my time with BetterMe. From cultural and language immersion to national history to the nonprofit and education systems, the program created such a rich learning environment. Working with BetterMe means working on an international, intercultural team of people who are passionate about youth mental health and wellness. My experience with Better Me has been life changing. I have gone the past two summers and plan to continue returning because of how incredible it is. The people you meet here are so kind and supportive. The children are so beautiful and I am inspired by their courage. If you love working with children and traveling… THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO!!!! My favorite part of the whole experience is those little moments you have where you just feel so connected to the kids. Reading, swimming, and painting with them are just a few of the many ways that I developed such close bonds with the children here.

My experience with Better Me is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I was nervous going alone the first time, but once I arrived, it became apparent that I had nothing to worry about. The warm reception from the staff and the children truly set the tone for the best adventure of my life. Of course, working with the children each day was the highlight of the experience, but being able to enjoy other activities that Better Me offers—like exploring the local area—made the trip unforgettable. The programme provides volunteers the freedom to be creative when preparing life skills lessons for the children. Volunteering at the local remand home was a standout part of my experience with Better Me. My time in Kenya really allowed me to detach from my worries back home and fully embrace the busy yet peaceful way of life at Korando, surrounded by beautiful people. I would encourage everyone considering the Better Me programme to take the opportunity with both hands. I hope I can return to home to Korando someday soon!

I came here as a student and left as a student with a backpack full of experiences. I have made wonderful connections and was able to explore my field of interest and was able to shape the direction of my future. Other than the educational aspect of my internship, this was by far the most wonderful emotional rollercoaster I‘v ever been on so far. You won‘t experience a fairytale and neither will you get the princess treatment: you‘ll be one of the team and you‘ll get treated as an equal, even if you‘re skill set is yet not as evaluated as you wish. This is what I‘ve been able to strengthen: my skill set, my ability to bond, my cultural filter and sensitivity and a mind that is not shy to question and think. The kids make you reevaluate your point of view and your experiences will shape your personality. That‘s why I would choose BetterMe again. Be careful how you think certain topics through and evaluate your role as an intern or volunteer. Question your motives and be humble. You‘re the foreigner. Observe and dive in. BetterMe will guide you through this process.

As a psychology student, Better Me gave me the opportunity to explore different areas of psychology where I could develop my abilities and knowledge, as well as helping me define what I wanted to do professionally. I was able to work in school, hospital, fieldwork and criminal system sectors. On the other hand, I felt right at home since the first day thanks to the kind and welcoming community, staff and other interns and volunteers from all over the world. Days are filled with adventure, laughter and learning.

My time in Kenya was truly unforgettable. Caro and I came to Kenya with curiosity and a desire to work with children, and we leave the country with hearts full of memories, inspiration, and gratitude. From teaching and organizing activities to laughing with the children during swimming lessons, every day brought new experiences and emotions. The warm welcome from the team, the energy of the children, and the meaningful conversations we had will remain with us forever. There was always someone to talk to, and you never felt alone. I learned a lot about the culture and the people, but I also heard some sad stories about the children. It was wonderful that they still brought so much joy to our everyday lives.

I still think about my stay in Kisumu with BetterMe. As a volunteer you get treated so well by the whole team. I think our help definitely makes a difference; you can help with money, time, our talents, kindness, teaching skills, … I do think the organisation has to work a bit on their social media. The post are not always up to date and I feel like some pictures are taken/chosen without permission. But overall the organisation is doing amazing! Everybody really cares and also wants the volunteers to have an amazing time. I love what the organisation does and I hope they can accomplish even more in the future. (They will ;) )

My time with Better Me in Kisumu was simply unforgettable. From the very first moment, I felt welcomed and part of a big family. The projects I was involved in not only allowed me to help but also completely broadened my perspective. Particularly moving were the stress management workshops with the local fire department – seeing how open and grateful the people were left a deep impression on me. Another highlight was serving as a referee at the first football tournament of the volunteer-founded Nyalenda Youngstars FC club – the joy, the enthusiasm of the children, and the energy of the whole team were truly touching. What really makes Better Me special is the genuine connection to the community: you don’t just participate superficially; you are part of projects that truly make a difference. Each day brought new challenges, new learning moments, and countless unforgettable encounters. I am incredibly grateful for this experience – it shaped me personally, gave me friendships for life, and showed me how much joy it brings to positively impact others together. I spent 6 weeks with Better Me in 2017 and it was a wonderful experience - to learn, grow and share. At this time the organization was just at the beginning. I helped at the school and in the community. The children and organization became like a second family for me. I also met a lot of nice people in the community. With some of them I still am in contact. I visited the project several times since. It is always very welcoming and heartwarming. I cant wait to bring my daughter to Korando one day.

I had a great experience staying with Better Me, it was an introduction to social work and the impact ngo's can have for local communities. There is a general positive energy. The experience also gave me a peek into Kenyan culture and customs, for example by adressing people with their last name, washing clothes, cooking with firewood... I loved the food in general, some new foods i was introduced to are chapati, ugali, dengu, matoke and the way of cooking eggs and meat also left an impression on my tastebuds. Faremost, the team members value volunteer safety while also allowing the freedom to explore the city by yourself. During both day and nighttime the team members make arrangements to enjoy the city of Kisumu while also keeping an eye for possible hazards to safety. This allowed me to make personal connections outside of the program for which i am forever grateful.

My time at Better me was an incredible learning experience, both in professional and in personal terms. On a professional level, the team was very open and supportive in taking into consideration my learning goals and assigned me tasks targeting my interests, which eventually shaped my present career in the humanitarian sector as a project coordinator. On a personal level, living in a stimulating environment, in a wonderfully welcoming community, and with an incredibly fun team, makes it still today, the best period in my life!! I would suggest this experience to someone who is flexible, wants to explore social work on the field, or is interested in how an NGO works. The strength of Better me is that they have plenty of local partners which are always happy to have an extra help, therefore it's possible to work on a single project or multiple depending on personal preferences and goals. Kenya and the city of Kisumu is also a great place for a first experience abroad, the city is really safe, is not a huge overwhelming metropoly like Nairobi, but still offers fun, and any service one might need. However one can still have a strong connection with the local community through activities on the field or simply by hanging out with the team. Lastly, I would suggest this experience to someone who is proactive. The magic in this organisation happens thanks to the synergy between the team and the volunteers; meaning that one has to be fully engaged and motivated to work hard and contribute to the projects, so don't expect that people tell you all the time what to do. On the contrary, the more you engage yourself in the projects, the more you will take from the whole experience.

A truely unforgettable experience - I spent 6 weeks with BetterMe and it was amazing! The team are lovely and supportive and I created lasting friendships with the other volunteers. The programme itself includes a variety of activities so each day looks different with swimming, teaching English or life skill lessons at local institutions, teaching art classes as well going to deliver talks at local high schools - my highlight was teaching a musical theatre dance class! The dome home where you stay is clean and the food is nice too. The social side outside of programme was great too with many occasions to go out and experience culture by trying new foods and going out for a drink as well as being able to book additional trips such as a safari and a weekend trip to Takawiri. I really can’t recommend it enough as a 19 year old female from England on a gap year!

Hey my name is Ben im 22 and from Munich in Germany, I had one of my coolest and most interesting times in Kenia with BetterMe. I learned so much and really started to trust myself again ... this trip gave me the courage to dive into things without hesitation. It was grounding to see communities working together, and I loved exploring, stepping into different people’s surroundings, and playing football with BetterMe, Coach Billy and the boys from Kisian and Korando. The BetterMe team was super great ... every one of them has their own superpower. Also all of them are meaningful people that are willing to support you and also to help and guide you through everything. I have stayed two times with Better Me: once for 10 weeks (in total 2 weeks longer than planned) and again for 6 weeks (for dedicated purpose). Both times it was a great time. Better Me as an organisation is well connected with the communities, does have a measurable impact on communities and schools and is very supportive and caring to all the volunteers as well as its staff, supporters and communities. The volunteer home is super inviting. Better Me also supports Mama Dolfine, an outstanding lady taking care of many children by giving them a safe place and providing them the ability to go to school. These children were always part of my days and they have now a special place in my heart. ❤️ There's not much more that one could need. Thanks to Better Me's excellent network I got involved many different projects and local schools such as the St. Williams school and Kudho Secondary school. Also the Kisumu children's remand home is of a high importance to us to either teach English or discuss life skills. At all times Better Me is willing to grow and to improve and also this is visible. Better me is very open to new ideas and ways to teach. Specifically with the Kudho School which is one of the few schools to offer German classes. I had the opportunity to build a special bond with a class of ten highly talented young women and its teacher. Those I have supported primarily during my second stay. In fact have promised this during my first stay, to come back to help them with their preparation for their national exam at the end of the school year. As a native German speaker it was a great honour and pleasure to assist. This is an unforgettable part of my life, not at last since we have build a special friendly relationship with each other. The opportunities to contribute are plenty, the hospitality is extraordinary, the Better Me team and all the staff can only be described as amazing and caring people. It was a real pleasure to stay with them and to work with them. And I am looking forward to meet all of them again. Not at last, because of some organised weekend trips such as to the Maasai Mara National Reserve Park and Uganda. Just to see something more of that beautiful country. Thanks a lot Better Me! Be part of this family is such a unique experience that words are not enough to express the impact that volunnteering with them had in my life. Better me program is designed to give you a full immersion, is flexible and guide by local people with a lot of experience. I value how hard and honestly they work to improve the lives of so many children and families. To stay in the beautiful dome home, to eat authentic kenyan food cook by the kenyan mamas, to share time with the children and other volunteers, to feel the love and the care that erase all boundaries and differences is something that you should experience by yourself. Thanks to them many children have the possibility of being able to study, something that would otherwise be unattainable. They also help with food, teachers' salaries, medical coverage, uniforms and many other things. Thanks to them the operation of this center is much easier on a daily basis. In short, it is an NGO that you have to go to if you want to try the experience of volunteering and you are thinking about going to this area and do work related to education. It is a wonderful team, with professionals who are very close, friendly and open and willing to help and facilitate things. Also, the whole Korando family is amazing: the incredible Mama Dolfine (who is the person who started the project and is in charge of the school), the teachers, the students and all the people who live there. If you go there, you will never regret going

Spending one year as the volunteer coordinator at Korando in Kenya has been one of the most valuable and memorable experiences of my life. As the coordinator on site, I had the privilege of living alongside the volunteers and working closely with the children, teachers, and local staff. One of the most rewarding aspects was the time spent with the children outside of class, whether it was playing, helping with homework, or simply being there for them. The joy and energy they brought into every moment was unforgettable. I also formed deep friendships with fellow volunteers and people in Kisumu, the nearby city, which made my experience even richer. The program itself is a beautiful balance of cultural exchange, community support, and personal development. Volunteers not only make a tangible impact by funding essentials like new school uniforms and supplies but also bring fresh energy, ideas, and talents to the children. A program like this also comes with its challenges. High turnover of short-term volunteers means children often have to adjust to new faces. Sometimes volunteers are not fully prepared for local conditions and the emotional challenge of leaving after building strong bonds is real. Looking back, I wouldn’t have missed this opportunity for anything. It was not just a year of service but also of friendship, discovery, and growth. Pros: Direct impact on community - volunteer fees go straight into supporting the Korando Center. Your skills and support have a direct impact on the children. Cons: Cultural and expectation gaps - adopting to local realities (lifestyle, infrastructure, cultutal norms) can be challenging. Emotional challenges: working closely with vulnerable children can be demanding and sometimes it's hard to leave them behind when volunteers go back to their lifes.

I was part of the program for a few months and to this day, I can confidently say that I’m still touched by how far this Organisation has come. I’m very greatful to have found an Organisation that deeply cares about its children (and it’s social workers as well as volunteers). The aim, to really help and support children and children really does come through with this. I felt very safe, very much guided and connected with all the people there and I hope that many other people can experience that too.

I learnt to push myself out of my comfort zone and try new things. It was amazing to connect with the school kids, my first time teaching, especially 4th and 5th grades; they were so excited, especially in CRE when we talked about Solomon and wisdom, their vision of religion was precious to me. I loved playing with them (we organised a relay with the other French girls. SO fun watching them run to win). Working with the association was real teamwork and the team was so friendly and welcoming. Kelvin’s speech at the high school and the chance to speak there was incredible even though we came from many countries, we shared similar school experiences. I also learned a lot about Kenya and the struggles young people face. Thank you so much for everything.. it was an amazing time!! 💛💛💛

Spending six weeks with Better Me in Kisumu was truly one of the most inspiring and rewarding experiences of my life. At first, I had a lot of respect and even a bit of nervousness about working with the children but they turned out to be absolutely amazing. The community life at the Dome was incredible: All volunteers living together under one roof, with the perfect balance of connection and freedom. If I wanted to spend time with the kids, help out, or join activities, I could. And if I needed some space for myself, that was just as possible. I was even able to continue my online work in the evenings and occasionally at a local coworking space without any issues. Everything felt safe and welcoming, from jogging alone to going to the gym or exploring the market. Highlights included football training sessions in the slum, unforgettable evenings at karaoke, and simply sharing daily life with the children and other volunteers. The atmosphere, the people, the food, and the overall spirit of the project were amazing. It was eye-opening, heart-expanding, and something I can recommend to anyone considering volunteering. If you’re still in doubt, just do it. It’s an experience you’ll carry with you forever.

Since the first day we arrived to Kisumu I have felt like home. Mama Dolfine, the extraordinary woman who runs the amazing Korando Educational Centre, the kids, the teachers, the team and the other volunteers welcomed us warmly with songs and dancing. It was one of the sweetest moments we have ever experienced. We were so excited and happy that we didn't know what to do! I couldn't believe we were already there. My dream had become true!

Even when the day was wearisome, because there is always something to do, in the evening, when you sit around the table with everyone, you feel happy. And it’s amazing to share this experience with those other extraordinary volunteers, which don’t hold back on anything, even helping me with my English just like those 2 wonderful women, Tania and Georgia, are doing.

I recommend everyone to try what I’ve been doing – it is fantastic! Supporting the Children in the Korando Educational Center is an experience that I will cherish forever. I felt home from the first day and the children and team are amazing.

While the first five months studying abroad were an entirely new and eye-opening experience on their own, my last month, which I had the privilege of spending with Better Me, located near Kenya’s third largest city, Kisumu, profoundly affected me in ways I could never have foreseen.

I simply feel part of the Korando family and I have experienced and share it’s values. Close to me I have my orange booklet with lots of notes. I’m sure I will start writing stories. I do not want to forget this great experience!

At first I found it odd that Torsten and Simon only responded to Torsty or Simmy (haha). But looking past that, my 4 weeks at Korando was the best experience. From the moment you wake up your day is filled with love, happiness and of course a little bit of chaos (the good kind). The friendships and memories I have because of Better Me are ones I’ll cherish forever. If you’re tossing up your decision between Better Me and other projects, I’d definitely recommend Better Me! You will get a real insight into the ‘African culture’ and the friendships and relationships you build with Mama, the team, the children and other volunteers will inspire you in many ways. Missing you all, love Cho Cho.

Had the most wonderful time here. I felt home immediately, and the love received felt unconditional. Mama Dolfine is one amazing woman and I was inspired by her story and words of wisdom. So proud of Torsten and the volunteers for helping her achieve her dream of helping the community. Would visit again in a heart beat!

I had one of the best experience in my life with the children, Mama Dolfine and my friend Torsten who is doing an amazing labour there! Everyone was so nice with me that now i have a piece of Africa in my heart forever! Miss you all!

I have volunteered at Better Me twice, in 2017 and 2019. The bond created with the children was fantastic. I was teaching geography and yoga and had the chance to explore the beautiful national parks. I still support the charity and will always do. It's like my family

Better Me has offered me an incredible amount of unforgettable experiences. From going on safari, visiting the equator and spending so much time with the kids to becoming a member of the family- each and every wish has been fulfilled. I didn’t think that this time would affect my life back in Austria so much, but it does, because I think about my second family each and every day. The kindness and effort of the team is something I will forever be grateful for and I am going to return to Kenya soon for sure. Thank you so much, for the best time of my life and for the memories that I will cherish forever. Asante sana.
