by: African Hoofbeatz

Add first reviewSince 2024

African HoofBeatz is based in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and offers a small-group equestrian placement centred on retraining ex-racehorses for polocrosse and other second careers. Open year-round for 3 to 12 weeks, the programme is designed for all riders and welcomes a maximum of 4 participants at a time, creating a personal, hands-on experience. Guests stay in a cottage on the family smallholding and become part of daily life on a traditional Zimbabwean equestrian property. Participants work alongside Andy Taylor and his family, helping to retrain horses, improve their horsemanship, and learn the fast-paced sport of polocrosse through schooling, chukkas, and tournaments. The experience also includes outrides, a 3-night horseback wildlife camping safari, and opportunities to engage with the local community and Zimbabwean way of life. African HoofBeatz is ideal for riders looking for more than a standard riding holiday: it combines practical horse work, sport, adventure, and cultural immersion in one distinctive programme

Program Highlights

Horseback safari in the Matopos: Take part in a memorable 3-night horseback camping safari in a small game reserve set within the dramatic Matopos landscape.

Join a small, hands-on riding programme: With small group sizes, every participant receives real involvement, practical experience, and the chance to build confidence, horsemanship, and independence.

Retrain ex-racehorses for a new future: Work with ex-racehorses as they are retrained for polocrosse, and life beyond the track, while building real horsemanship and confidence in the saddle.

Work with your own string of horses: Each participant is allocated their own string of 2 to 3 horses for the duration of their stay, allowing you to build a genuine bond and watch your string develop.

Ride more, learn more: Enjoy two to three riding sessions a day, with your time focused on riding, grooming, and developing practical horsemanship skills rather than heavy yard work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this programme and where is it based?

African HoofBeatz is a small-group equestrian placement based in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, focused on retraining ex-racehorses for polocrosse, safari riding, and other second careers. It combines daily riding, practical horsemanship skills and immersive life on a Zimbabwean smallholding. Participants stay in a shared furnished cottage on the property, with space for up to four guests. The cottage includes a bedroom setup with single beds and bunk beds.

What level of riding experience do I need?

The programme is suitable for all riders from beginner level and above, but participants must be 18 or older. Less experienced riders are welcome, as Andy really enjoys building confidence in less experienced riders. Although some activities with younger or sharper horses may be more limited. The riding style you'll learn is described as a fusion of Western and English, We ride in Austrailan Stock saddles and We generally ride one-handed.

Do I need to know how to play polocrosse before I arrive?

No. You do not need any previous polocrosse experience, most of our participants have never even heard of polocrosse before! Participants are taught the basics of the sport, including the rules, stick-and-ball skills, and tactics, and can build up to friendly games and local practices.

What is included in the programme fee?

The fee includes shared cottage accommodation, three meals a day, tea, coffee and water, WiFi, Laundry and cleaning, group transport within the programme, and all core equestrian activities including riding lessons, polocrosse practices, outrides, horsemanship, schooling, backing lessons, basic veterinary care, and stable management. It also includes one 4-day, 3-night horseback camping safari in the Matopos area.

What is not included?

International flights, visas, comprehensive travel and medical insurance, transfers outside the itinerary, drinks and meals in town, extra excursions, personal spending, and optional competitions such as polocrosse tournaments or local showjumping shows are not included.
