What inspired you to travel abroad?

I've always wanted to study abroad because I believe it's crucial to step outside my comfort zone, explore new places, and immerse myself in different cultures. This experience offers a unique opportunity to broaden my perspective, challenge myself, and gain a deeper understanding of both the world and myself.

The chance to engage with diverse communities, learn in new environments, and develop a global outlook is something I feel will greatly enrich my life and personal growth.

Why did you choose AIFS Abroad?

At a study abroad fair, I had the chance to meet with an advisor from AIFS, and I was impressed with what their program had to offer. The inclusion of exciting excursions, the support of an advisor based abroad, and the convenience of room and board all made the program stand out to me.

It seemed like a great package that would provide both great experiences and practical support while studying abroad.

What was your favorite part about Dublin, Ireland?

I absolutely loved every aspect of Dublin—the vibrant location, the convenience of easy transport, and the art scene. However, what I cherished the most was the opportunity to hop on a bus and find myself in Howth, right by the beach.

There, I spent countless hours picking sea glass and savoring delicious seafood. The experience of being able to seamlessly transition from the city to the serene coastal beauty of Howth was truly magical.

It provided a perfect blend of urban excitement and tranquil seaside relaxation, making my time in Dublin unforgettable.

What made your experience abroad extraordinary?

The chance to immerse myself in a new culture was truly transformative. Experiencing new art, listening to unfamiliar music, and trying diverse foods all contributed to a rich and rewarding adventure.

Meeting people from all over the world was equally extraordinary. I formed lifelong friendships with individuals from a variety of backgrounds—connections that I might never have made without my time in Ireland.

This global exposure not only broadened my perspective but also deepened my appreciation for the diversity and beauty of different cultures. The memories and relationships I built during this experience have become cherished parts of my life.

How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?

My advisor, Sharon, was an invaluable resource throughout my program. She played a crucial role in helping us navigate the bus system and discover new places to explore, making the transition to a new city much smoother.

During challenging times, such as when we fell ill, she ensured we had access to medical care by arranging appointments with doctors. When my phone was stolen, Sharon not only provided emotional support but also guided me through the process of filing an insurance claim, which was a part of the program's benefits.

Sharon's support extended beyond just handling issues; she was instrumental in enriching our experience. She organized engaging excursions and was always there to help us adapt to a new learning environment.

Her dedication and care made a significant difference, turning potential obstacles into opportunities for growth and making my time abroad truly memorable.

What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?

Reflecting on my experience, I would have packed less. I found that a lot of the items I brought with me were seldom used.

If I were to do it again, I would opt for a more minimalist approach, focusing only on essentials and versatile items. This would have made my travels more manageable, allowed me to move around with greater ease, and given me more space to bring back souvenirs or other meaningful items from my time abroad.

Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.

On days when I had classes, my routine began with making a hearty breakfast to start the day. After attending my classes, I’d return to my room to handle practical tasks like doing laundry and catching up on homework.

I often set up camp on the couch in the laundry room, where I could focus on my studies in a relaxed setting. Evenings offered a choice between going out to enjoy a pint and dinner with friends, which was always a highlight, or staying in with my roommates.

Our time at home was filled with cultural exchange. We took turns cooking and sharing dishes from our respective countries, which not only enriched our meals but also fostered a deeper connection among us.

On days when I didn’t have classes, I made the most of my free time by planning various outings. Whether it was visiting a museum, relaxing at a beach, exploring a farm, or joining a guided tour, each adventure provided a new way to experience and learn about Ireland.

These explorations allowed me to fully immerse myself in the local culture, making each day an opportunity to discover something new and memorable.

What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?

I lived in a campus dorm with three other people, each of us having our own private room and bathroom. The beds were notably more comfortable than those in US dorms, featuring real mattresses and linens supplied by AIFS.

We shared a kitchen and a common room with couches, which provided a great space for socializing. I appreciated having my own private area for personal time, while also enjoying the communal spaces when I felt more social.

What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?

I’d recommend being aware that if any issues arise, you’re not alone—AIFS offers a robust support system to assist with the adjustment process. Studying abroad is a deeply transformative experience that often requires time to fully adapt.

It’s important to maintain an open mind and be willing to embrace new opportunities, even if they push you out of your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to explore on your own.

If you’re interested in doing something or joining a tour that doesn’t align with what your friends are planning, go ahead and do it. Planning your time around your own interests can be incredibly rewarding.

Solo adventures can lead to meeting new people and forming meaningful friendships outside of the program. Also, try to build connections with classmates and roommates.

Engaging with them can enhance your experience and provide additional support as you adjust. If you’re interested in taking a weekend trip to a place like Scotland and none of your friends are available, don’t hesitate to book a hostel and go.

Hostels are not only budget-friendly but also great places to meet fellow travelers. Embracing solo travel and making the most of opportunities will help you fully experience and enjoy your time abroad.

Would you recommend your program and provider to others? Why?

I would definitely recommend my program and provider to others. The application process was straightforward, and the benefits were outstanding.

Having comprehensive support throughout the entire journey, from the initial application to returning home, was incredibly reassuring. The presence of an advisor abroad, like Sharon, made a huge difference.

Not having to worry about room and board was a significant advantage, especially since many other exchange students I met had to handle their own accommodations, which they found both expensive and challenging.

Living on campus was fantastic—any issues with the apartment were promptly addressed by maintenance, and we didn’t have to deal with rent or appliance costs.

The program’s support system and included excursions were exceptional, featuring sports games, overnight trips, Irish farm experiences, tea tours, and more.

Additionally, the program provided assistance with airport transfers, visa arrangements, bus passes, heritage cards, and other essential services. This support greatly simplified what could have been a complex process if managed on my own.

We also had an advisor who gave us a valuable presentation on cultural differences, public transport, and provided some apartment supplies when we first arrived. This level of support and organization made the entire experience seamless and enjoyable.

What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?

During my time abroad, I forged lifelong friendships with people from all corners of the globe. This experience not only enriched my personal connections but also made me a more well-rounded individual.

I gained a deeper understanding of Irish culture and history than I could have ever achieved at home. Exploring Ireland allowed me to visit historical sites and landmarks that I had previously only read about in textbooks.

Seeing these places in person brought a new level of depth and context to my understanding. This hands-on learning experience provided me with a fresh perspective on history and culture that was both eye-opening and transformative.

Overall, the journey broadened my horizons and offered the new perspective I needed to see the world in a different light.

Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?

My study abroad experience has made me more adventurous and open to trying new things. I now feel more comfortable taking on activities independently and am more inclined to explore new experiences in my hometown that I might have previously overlooked.

In fact, I’m even planning events related to my time abroad—like attending an Irish folk music and storytelling event with my mother later this month. This newfound enthusiasm for exploring and connecting with different cultures has been a wonderful outcome of my journey.

What does meaningful travel mean to you?

Meaningful travel involves approaching your journey with an open mind and a genuine eagerness to embrace new experiences. It’s about actively seeking out opportunities to immerse yourself in the local culture and learn about the people, traditions, and customs of the place you’re visiting.

This kind of travel goes beyond simply seeing the sights; it’s about engaging with the destination on a deeper level, understanding its history and values, and connecting with the local community.

By embracing this mindset, you enrich your travel experience and gain insights that transform your perspective, making your journey both impactful and memorable.
