What inspired you to study abroad?

I chose to study abroad because it was unlike anything I had ever done before. I had never been to Europe, or really done anything independently. I didn’t know anyone in my program and I didn’t know what to expect. It was scary, but it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I am so happy I did it. I was very open to this new experience, and I think that is what made it so great.

What was your living situation like in Paris?

My housing arrangement was a single studio apartment in the 14th district of Paris. At first, I was very nervous to live alone, but after my summer there I am very happy for that experience. I had many friends just down the hall. We were all together often and we bonded over our common housing arrangement. Never having lived alone before, this experience taught me independence. I am very thankful!

What was the biggest challenge you faced while studying abroad?

The biggest challenge I faced while abroad was budgeting. It is hard to take advantage of every opportunity you want to while trying to save money. Some things are very expensive. For me – it was worth it. Although I spent a lot of money, it was on things that defined my experience and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Why would you go back to Paris if you could?

I would LOVE to go back to Paris as soon as possible. I want to show my family and friends all of the wonderful things Paris has to offer. I’d like to share my experiences with them. Paris was beautiful and the pictures I took don’t do it justice.

What advice would you give future participants of the IES Abroad Paris program?

A tip I would give to future participants on the program is that this experience can be whatever you want it to be. Take advantage of the resources you have and make it whatever you want it to be. There is so much to see and do and it seems as though there isn’t enough time – make the best of it!

If you could study abroad again, where would you go?

If I could study abroad again I would still go back to Paris. It was amazing. If I had to choose somewhere else, I would pick Rome. It was one of my favorite places to visit. The culture and history was fascinating to me. And the food was UNBELIEVABLE.

I have wanted to go abroad since I was in high school. It's the best combination of school and travel. I am also pursuing an international studies degree, and the best way to learn is by experiencing new things in other countries!

I started taking German classes in high school because three years of a foreign language were required to graduate. By the second meeting, it had become my favorite class, a preference which has yet to change even seven years later.

To be completely honest, I wasn't very happy at my home university. I had been struggling to feel like I belonged for over a year by Fall 2023, and decided I needed a semester away doing something I was passionate about.
