What inspired you to work for EUROACE?
I was inspired to work for Euroace mainly because of the work environment and friendly, easy-going atmosphere. The opportunity to work with international students is something I really enjoy as well.
I think that working with foreign students is an enriching experience because you can learn a lot from them and really help them at the same time. Even more, the relationships you can create between colleagues and with the students is a very special part of working for Euroace.

What is your favorite part of your job?
As I have worked as a Spanish teacher for many years, I prefer to work with adults and especially those who are motivated to learn! This is really rewarding for me. Also, I enjoy teaching because it is always fun and it’s different day to day. No two students are the same and classes always follow different themes and focuses.
What challenges do you often face in your role and how do you overcome them?
When teaching a foreign language, the students can of course find it difficult and encounter problems along the way. Sometimes, students may not understand explanations or certain vocabulary. I deal with this by not reverting back to English to explain, but rather I try to explain it in a different way in Spanish, use gestures, or try to give several examples. These situations can be challenging for both the student and the teacher, but overall, it will benefit their learning experience as well as my ability to teach!
Another problem that can occur within international education is cultural misunderstandings. In these cases, I try to help students understand why it is different here than it is to their country. Also, I try to put myself in their shoes to understand them. I think having empathy is a really important part of overcoming these problems and of course - always ending with a smile!

What's different about the way Euroace teaches Spanish to its students?
At Euroace our classes are designed and tailored to fit the needs of each individual student. We try to make our courses appropriate and effective for everyone who joins us. In general, our group classes include lots of communication, lots of fun, and we make sure that the students are the stars of the class. Another aspect we make sure of is that our group classes are small to enable maximum speaking time for our students and so that as teachers, we can focus on our students more directly.
What do you like most about teaching international students?
The thing I like most is that they really have a desire to learn. In general, they come with a positive attitude and treat all of our teachers with respect. After teaching international students for many years I have also noticed that they put a lot of trust in you and they value what you do. For me, it is enjoyable and enriching to work with international students.
Why does it benefit students to come to Spain to learn Spanish?
The truth is that when a student comes to Spain, they learn more than just the language. They can also learn about different ways of living compared to what they are used to. I believe that studying abroad helps young people to understand life and learn about the world. And of course, here in Spain we have a very rich culture so they can learn a lot about this too!

What are some typical questions that students ask you and how do you typically respond?
Students typically ask about Spanish customs and behavior. They want to know people’s habits and what’s typical here. We cover the most obvious differences within our class material but they always want to know more!
Another popular question I get asked is where are the best restaurants to go and eat paella. And about what’s good in terms of food and drink in general. Students also want to know about the best things to do and the most beautiful places to see in Valencia.
What advice do you have for individuals thinking about studying Spanish abroad?
My advice for students who want to come and study Spanish abroad would be simple - just do it! If you are interested in the language and you want to improve, there’s no better way than to come to Spain and see the country and the culture for yourself. The great thing about studying abroad is that, along with the Spanish classes, you gain an insight into the true culture and way of life of the Spanish people.
Maybe you could prepare yourself before, grasping the basics of the language or taking some classes, so that the new culture and language is not quite so shocking as it could be.
What do you hope participants take away from your programs?
I hope that after taking a Spanish course with Euroace, our students have a higher level of Spanish, and not only this, but they are more confident to use it! I also hope that they have learned about other people and cultures, as this is also a great part about being involved on our Spanish courses - you can meet people from anywhere! Last but not least, I hope they have had fun and enjoy life!
How will the experience help students in the future?
The Euroace experience will help you to have an open mind, to deal with challenges, to know what it’s like to work as part of a team, to be patient with others and with yourself, and to accept all types of people. It’s true that many of our students finish their programs and say that they got much more out of it than they had expected. Another thing they may take from our experience are good contacts and networks for their future, whether that be for their career or as new friends!
