Plastic Up- & Recycling in Zanzibar: Volunteering

The Corporate Social Responsibility initiative in Zanzibar tackles plastic pollution by transforming hard plastics, used tires, and other waste into valuable, handmade products. Through shredding and melting techniques, discarded materials are upcycled into flowerpots, furniture, lamps, wall clocks, and tourist souvenirs, all designed with an emphasis on aesthetics.

The project also empowers women with limited education by employing them to collect plastic waste directly from hotels and restaurants. This prevents pollution and offers a vital income source. Beyond upcycling, the program runs workshops and awareness campaigns for local schools and groups, promoting waste prevention as the crucial first step in environmental protection.

Anyone with a relevant interest can support them! Volunteers primarily assist with marketing, administration, and creating educational materials. For example, you could be asked to create social media content, design flyers and brochures, update the website, take product photos, and more. Skills in graphic design, social media, photography, creative design, and Excel are highly beneficial.
