Child Care and Teaching Internship in Tokyo
by: World Unite!
In Japan, working parents often need childcare after school ends at 3:15 PM. So-called Gakudos are after-school care centers for children aged 3-10, offering homework help, sports, games, and English learning. We collaborate with several non-profit Gakudos in Tokyo, each hosting 40-100 children daily. The primary goal is for the children to have fun. At the centers, children do their homework, play games with the staff, engage in sports (such as soccer and table tennis), have snacks, and learn English. Internships and volunteering are also available at international kindergartens and preschools for children aged 2-6. These schools use English as the primary language and follow international curricula like BRIDGE. They focus on early education through play, arts, and physical activities and often incorporate Montessori elements. Children learn reading, writing, arithmetic, and about global cultures. You will support staff by engaging children in activities, assisting with meals, and maintaining the facility. Work hours are typically 6-8 hours daily, 5 days a week. Some placements may offer a small financial contribution for stays of 12+ weeks.
