My experience with the Social Work, Education & Youth Development project with Sharon and Rustin was life-changing. It was meant just to be a stop on a year-long participatory research project. I planned to commit to a month with this organization and ended up extending twice. Needless to say, my expectations for this project were exceeded in every category. Social impact and activities: If you prioritize local-community centered, ethical and grassroots organizations, this project has to be at the top of your list. The organization itself supports at-risk youth and the kids themselves are talented, engaged and earnest. You will spend much of your time learning from and laughing with bright young people while facilitating programs that nurture their development. In your off time, you can immerse yourself in the outdoors (some of my favorites included ziplining, game drives and nature reserve hikes) and explore part of the Garden Route or even just hang out in town with your new friends at many of the locally owned cafes. Location, safety and support: Knysna is a gorgeous, easily navigable and friendly town. People know one another and in that way, it is a great place to connect with folks with similar interests. There is a great sense of community, people’s networks are often interwoven with each others and acquaintances become like family at an unprecedented rate. Overall, I encourage anyone who’s interested in either the broad category of social welfare or even just has an interest in visiting South Africa to come and learn and experience under the guidance of Sharon and Rustin who go above and beyond to provide you with the best experience. Their generosity with their time and efforts and their passion for this work is evident in the way they organize this project and others for and with their community. Working with organizers as dedicated as they are and a community that is so engaged is really an incredible opportunity not to be missed.

As a newly qualified self-esteem and confidence coach, this was an incredible opportunity for me to test out what works and what doesn’t while also giving my time, energy and skillset to an incredibly worthwhile project. It was a bit of a culture shock when I first arrived but the team were so welcoming and the kids were so interested in getting to know a new person. They also all want to be there which is a testament to the project and keeps them safe and on the right track. During my time on the project, I was part of so many different things and had the opportunity to immerse myself in all the services they offer and duties they carry out. From playing games, to worksheets, to home visits and discussions about the challenges the children and, by extension Sinethemba, are facing to keep these children safe and preparing them for their next steps - no day was the same and it was very varied and gave a clear picture of what was going on. The kids that attend the centre are incredible. They all have dreams and aspirations and if we can help them gain and cultivate the right skills and attitudes, they will get there. They love going there, they’re always happy and smiling and enjoying themselves. The team have a really beautiful way of speaking to the children with respect and discipline, making the children understand the importance of going to school and their behaviour in order to stay there. I’d love to go back and work with the centre some more in the future and see how they are getting on. Each child is so capable and they can reach their goals with the right attitude and support. The team have a tough job but they do it wonderfully. It was one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences of my life and I feel so grateful to have been able to have this opportunity. Socially, I cannot sing Knysna's praises enough. A beautiful little town with plenty to do. The local people were so welcoming and lovely, I made so many friends and it truly felt like a home from home. Sharon was an amazing volunteer co-ordinator and became a friend. She welcomed me to town like a visiting family member and I am so grateful to her for everything. It was a very tough place to leave and I can't wait to return! If you are looking for a life changing, exciting and rewarding experience, this is the project for you. Volunteer International Adventures are a great company to go with and make everything so easy!

I went to SA for 12 weeks and it was the most amazing, incredible experience of my life! It changed me for the better! Sharon was so helpful from the very start. I’d never done anything like this on my own and was terrified! Soon as I arrived, Sharon was already there to meet me, she was friendly and bubbly and made me feel at home and I felt at ease straight away! She taught me about the place, what was on, about the locals, where the shops were etc Sharon always made sure we were safe no matter what! I loved every single second I was their! Everyone was so friendly, I would highly recommend

Incredible experience as a high schooler

I went alone to Knysna, South Africa the summer after my sophomore year (age 16) and had the most remarkable experience of my life. I taught Music and English at Chris Nissen Primary School. Arriving in Knysna was overwhelming at first -- the other volunteers were all much older than me, and there was a lot to learn quickly. However, I received the best orientation I could ask for and after my first week I knew my way around town -- to all the grocery stores, cafes, and spots to eat. I also knew the best/safest taxi services which were very useful! Teaching in the schools was an incredible experience. I taught seven classes of 30+ students, and there was definitely a learning curve. I took initiative and did some really great work -- in my English classes, I read Harry Potter to the students in small pieces and then we broke down vocab words, plot, characters, and setting. In my music classes, I focused on my background, which is choral music. The students and I exchanged pieces that forged our various cultural knowledge -- I, the spirituals and protest music of America's Civil Rights Era, and them, music associated with the Soweto Youth Riots of 1976. On the weekends the other volunteers went on the best excursions, everything from a spa treatment to a day in a wildlife reserve. I saw elephants, rhinos, lions, and monkeys all in 100% natural, free-range habitats up close. Sharon and the school I volunteered at were also could not have been more understanding any time I had any issues. For example, when I arrived I was quite sick, so I stayed home an extra day before volunteering so that I could rest up and get acclimated to the new environment. Toward the end of my stay I got food poisoning (not sure how), which was a nasty 24 hours, but I got vitamin C tablets and rested and was fine the next day. Essentially, while the environment volunteering is rigorous and will get you out of your comfort zone, at no point do you have to worry about doing anything you are not comfortable with. I feel extremely lucky that, at such a young age, I was in such a caring environment on my first ever volunteer trip. I cannot recommend this program enough!

I volunteered on and off for 4 years at a Township School in Knysna, it was the most rewarding, wonderful experience I have ever had. No words can describe the feeling of knowing you have made a difference. Sharon was brilliant as a host and nothing was ever too much trouble and she went out of her way to make sure my stay was memorable. Knysna is such a beautiful place and there is so much to do, you will never be bored. If you want to make a difference, see wonderful things, then book this experience.

I visited South Africa in July 2019 & it was the best thing I ever did! Sharon was so kind and helpful throughout. Sharon took us sightseeing and ensured I enjoyed the trip to the maximum. Sharon was always there to talk to and guided me throughout. I also met some amazing girls and memories that I will cherish forever.

I cannot begin to express how incredible this opportunity was from arrival to departure. Sharon answered any and all question I had prior to pursuing this trip and welcomed me at the airport with warm open arms, making me feel at home and as comfortable as possible during my stay. More importantly, the experience I gained from this trip was invaluable. Working with an animal welfare in Knysna introduced me to the cultural differences within veterinary medicine and exposed me to the importance of client communication and animal care in an underserved community. This experience provided me with a perspective of veterinary medicine I would have never received within the US, emphasizing the importance of embodying an open-mindset within this profession. The staff I had the opportunity to work with allowed me to have as much hands-on experience as possible with examinations, diagnostics, and surgical procedures. I truly cannot recommend this experience enough! Everything about it was more than I expected it to be!

Firstly, Sharon is just absolutely fantastic. I can't express how much she believes amd care about what she does. She made the experience so much more meaningful that kn already was with her insight into the impact that I could have on my trip. The schools I was involved in were all based in townships within the area and pupils were fantastic. It was truly wholesome getting the opportunity to teach them something new and learn something in return. The excursions available in the area are immense too. From Whale watching to working in Knysna Elephant park for the day. There is so much to do, 14 days was not long enough! You would be a fool not to consider working with Sharon and the programmes she offers.

Life-changing experiences working with extraordinary people... Spending a month in Knysna helping out at the Youth Development Centre was one of the most amazing and humbling experiences in my life. I spent each day in the Knysna township with the team that runs the centre, understanding more about the challenges the kids face and the positive impact we can make with our help. It felt like I learnt as much from them and they might have from me. Everyone was so generous with welcoming the volunteers into their world and appreciative of the effort we made to offer our support and time. The month-long program was brilliantly run and organised by Sharon - who made sure we made the most of every minute of our time there. Offering numerous and diverse ways to help out with the local community - from teaching at a primary schooI to helping out with the local mountain biking school - plus exploring the stunning local area, farmer's communities and extraordinary nature and wildlife. I couldn't be more grateful to Sharon, her organisation and all the people I met, including the other volunteers, for the most incredible time I spent in Knysna.

I spent two weeks on a youth development project. It was extremely valuable. Each day as a volunteer was as important as the last and the entire experience was made even more enlightening by the care, and genuine passion for the job shown by those coordinating the experience, Sharon Dreyer in particular. She ensured the work we were involved in was unique and compassionate. The work involved helping youths gain the skills they needed to return to education or employment, and what may feel like minor involvement to us meant a lot to the youths involved and that makes all the difference. Would recommend to anyone who can contribute their time to this great cause.

I knew I was in safe hands from my very first contact with Sharon. She provided me with all the information I needed and answered all my questions. Sharon met me at the local airport and safely transported me to the volunteers' accommodation, chatting all the way, giving me a flavour of what was to come. Sharon was always available and nothing was too much trouble, we saw her at least every day when she arrived at the volunteer house to take us to our respective placements. There were also plenty opportunities for social activities and trips to nature reserves and markets at the weekends, all of which Sharon arranged. The placement provided me with lots of opportunities to participate in projects, supporting staff and deliver training. My choice of this programme was primarily based on the placement itself rather than the country but I soon fell in love with the warmth of the people of South Africa and the amazing countryside and wildlife. I have been a regular visitor since that first visit and meeting up with Sharon each time is always a highlight. I would have no hesitation in recommending this programme to anyone who wants a fully immersive experience of life in South Africa.

My experience working within the youth centre changed my life for the better. Having such a hands on coordinator who genuinely cared for me made it so enjoyable, interacting with the kids and becoming their friend over the space of a month. I felt so at ease on my placement, I felt secure and looked after, all at the same time of looking after the youth. Overall my experience was unlike no other, unforgettable and made me go on to further my growth back home. I loved it so much! Olivia

I did a 5 week placement with a local provider of counselling and health and social care programmes. The organisation were really welcoming and I met so many interesting people from the local community. Outside of the placement I had so many great experiences and got to taste the culture of Knysna whilst taking in the local sights and beauty. Highlights of the social side of my placement were the opportunity to visit Addo National Park to see wildlife up close, Sunday beachside braais, a weekend in Cape Town and cruise of the Knysna Heads. The best thing was the people though - so many warm characters, including a Sharon, who was so helpful in showing me round, introducing me to people and giving advice about great places to stay and eat. Altogether a fun and rewarding experience, which has really helped me in my career too. Couldn’t recommend the experience enough.

I honestly had the time of my life, and I always get reminded and think about my unforgettable wonderful experiences whenever I see any wildlife in social media or TV. I learned A LOT from everyone, especially from the veterinary nurse and the animal caretaker. I worked with a lot of African penguins and learned everything from admitting, treating injuries, medicating, assessing hydration and tubing electrolytes solution. I also got to be part of the preparation of penguin release day, and assisted to make sure the penguins are in good shape and fit to be released, and this is the most rewarding part of the work. Another exciting time was when I got to work with a male diabetic cheetah, and got the opportunity to assist in giving IV fluids and insulin medication. Unfortunately, we had to put him down due to the progression of the disease. One of the highlights of my experience was when I got to work with a very cute African antelope, and I looked forward every single morning to feed her bottle milk. I also got to help the caretakers in preparing the meals for lions, cheetahs, leopard, caracals, etc and feeding them. Very exciting times!

I did a volunteer placement in Knysna. It was a fantastic experience. The administration process was very smooth and I was supported the whole way through with any documents required. I would highly recommend volunteering.

After a long career in social work in Scotland, this was a wonderful reminder of the value that social work services and community development can bring to areas of deprivation. A reminder too that this value doesn’t just depend upon financial resources but upon the personal resources that individual people bring - particularly respect, wisdom, compassion, empathy and humour. In the face of limited practical and financial resources compared to the UK, this remarkable project clearly delivers on its goals for young people and their families and for their community. The staff and the young people themselves were very welcoming and very willing to give their time to talk, to explain and to ask questions. I most definitely feel that I got more out of the experience than they did, but this did not seem to diminish their enthusiasm. I was very aware of the significant challenges the young people in the project were facing but by the end of the placement, I could see that in spite of that, young people are pretty much the same wherever they are. So full of potential, full of hopes and dreams and the energy to realise them if they have the chance. An inspiration to me in so many ways.

Such a wonderful experience!

I was in Knysna teaching theater about 5 years ago and it’s still one of the most life changing, incredible experiences I’ve had in my life! It was a great mixture of teaching as well as experiencing the culture and beauty of Knysna! The children I taught were so willing to learn and I learned a lot from them as well. I volunteered in South Africa for 11 weeks and the experience changed my life. It taught me so much and inspired me to choose a career and most importantly I had a wonderful time! The project was a perfect balance of time teaching in the school, volunteering at the township soup kitchen and enjoying myself! I managed to see so much of the area and had a ball on safari and visiting local attractions. The house was a wonderful place to stay and I loved meeting other volunteers from around the world. Sharon was a wonderful support and a good friend. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone wanting to explore the world, give something back and have an unforgettable life experiences.
