Volunteer with Dumpsite Project

Volunteer for the Visayans is a great Philippine NGO in Leyte. The projects are ideal for someone wanting to get their hands dirty. My project was construction at the community center at the dumpsite . VFV is tuned into the needs of the kids and the community center has local buy in from the village. If you can't do a developing country don't do this program. Expect to make a million friends and be impacted by the children. You won't be the same after you do the program.

Scavenging for plastics and other recyclable items at the city dump is a grim reality of life for many children in the community. Most of these children are malnourished. A few attend school off and on, while the rest do not attend school at all. The children, some as young as five, work at the city dump to supplement their parents' meager earnings. On a good day, a child typically earns about 75 cents, enough perhaps to enable the family to have a second meal that day. The work is hard and dangerous, and the stench o...
