Speech Pathology & Audiology Internships in Cape Town
Speech pathology and audiology aren't things you learn solely from a textbook, you learn them in the room, with a real patient, under a mentor who's done it for years. That's exactly the type of internship we offer. VACorps places you with an experienced mentor for hands-on training tailored to whichever path you're drawn to: helping people communicate more clearly, or helping with diagnosing and treating patients. You'll get the opportunity to work in clinics, schools, private practices, and other real clinical settings: refining your skills, sharpening your confidence, and getting far more direct patient contact than most students get back home. Along the way, you'll deepen your understanding of global healthcare challenges and see firsthand how speech pathology and audiology are practiced outside a first-world system. • Curious what it's like to shadow a licensed pathologist or audiologist mid-breakthrough with a patient? This is where you find out. • It's even possible to combine two internships during your time in Cape Town, ask your Admissions Advisor for details.

Discovering Myself in Cape Town: My VAC Experience
October 09, 2024by: Kadie Biese - United StatesI chose Cape Town as the place to intern abroad because I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone and travel to a new place! Cape Town is BEAUTIFUL! Truly, it is the best place to visit! My internship as an elective student at UCT in the audiology department at Groote Schuur Hospital was AMAZING! The staff and students were so friendly! We enjoyed learning from each other and sharing our stories every day. All of my supervisors challenged me to think deeper and apply my knowledge with each patient we saw. They trusted me to help teach their students and guide them through clinical procedures. The biggest highlight at my site was being able to observe two ear surgeries in person! It was the BEST day of my life! Reflecting on my stay, I can see how much I have changed as a person. I am more open-minded, more outgoing, and more accepting of change. I would recommend VACorps to anyone who wants to grow as a person! Cape Town and VACorps will forever hold a special place in my heart!

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between speech pathology and audiology track?
- Speech pathology and audiology are related but distinct fields: speech pathology focuses on helping individuals (often children with physical or developmental delays) improve communication skills by diagnosing and treating speech, language, voice, and swallowing disorders.
- While audiology centers more on diagnosing and managing hearing and balance issues across patients of all ages, ensuring auditory health and supporting effective communication.
Will I get direct contact with patients, or mostly observe?
Placements in Cape Town tend to be far more hands-on than equivalent internships in first-world countries, so expect real patient interaction, not just observation from the sidelines.
Do I need to choose a track now, speech pathology or audiology?
Not necessarily. Many interns use this experience to figure out which specific area of the profession they want to focus on going forward
What will I gain from this that I couldn't get at home?
Beyond clinical skills, you'll deepen your understanding of global healthcare challenges and see how these fields operate in a very different healthcare system than what you're used to.
Do I need to be fluent in a local language to work with patients?
No because English is widely spoken, understood and used as the primary language for business, tourism and daily life.
