Program Overview

Healthcare internships in Cape Town are some of our most sought-after and competitive placements, and it's easy to see why: interns get genuinely rare access to South Africa's public healthcare system, working directly within it rather than observing from the outside. With a population now approaching 64 million, the country's public health projects and community clinics carry a serious, constant workload, and you'll be contributing to that effort firsthand.

Your placement is shaped around your specific area of interest, whether that's public health, pre-medicine, pre-PA, health promotion, nursing, or dentistry, so you're matched to a site that genuinely aligns with your goals rather than a generic healthcare role. Throughout your internship, you'll interact directly with patients, with members of Cape Town's underserved communities, and with experienced healthcare professionals guiding your learning.

Placements are typically based at outpatient community health clinics, NGOs, hospitals, or governmental health agencies, giving you a well-rounded, honest look at how healthcare actually gets delivered in a resource-constrained public system.

Gaining Global Health Experience in Cape Town

I chose to come to Cape Town because I wanted the chance to experience a new culture and enjoy meaningful new experiences. I felt that an internship abroad would help me understand how the health system and health research differ from Australia. During my internship, I enjoyed learning about the various studies my host organization was involved in, what they were researching, and how that research was being carried out. This helped me gain a deeper understanding of the health landscape in South Africa and the way the health system functions. I also received valuable career advice and recommendations from my supervisors, which I will continue to use moving forward. Throughout my time in Cape Town, I met many new friends from around the world and had the opportunity to live independently while gaining meaningful work experience. I grew more confident in myself, becoming more independent and outgoing. Cape Town is a beautiful city with a wide range of activities, which I enjoyed both on my own and with friends.
