Bachelor of Education (Mathematics Education)

Mathematics is included in the core curriculum of primary and secondary programs because it has been recognized that students develop the skills needed to function effectively in their personal and working lives by doing and learning mathematics. Research findings indicate that teaching quality and teacher quality have a significant impact on students’ learning in this field. Thus, teachers need to understand how children learn mathematics and collect well-developed strategies for appropriate teaching of the subject.

Key developments in mathematics education currently are the promotion of interactive mathematics, an increased emphasis on problem-solving and investigations, and the use of technology in the classroom. To this end, the option courses are designed and taught with the intention of building on a student’s current knowledge and experience in a way that encourages self-sustained professional development both during and after the period of study.
