International Medical Elective: Global Health
The International Medical Elective provides medical students with a tailored, hands-on clinical and cross-cultural learning experience in Belize. It is highly flexible, designed to meet your individual learning objectives and academic requirements (recommended for three credit hours). You'll engage in supervised clinical observations and procedures at a host hospital or clinic, enhancing your skills while navigating a resource-limited healthcare setting. Specialized rotations are available in fields such as pediatrics, general surgery, anesthesiology, and surgery. The program is structured around global health ethics, cultural competence, and healthcare system analysis, preparing you to become a globally aware medical professional.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can medical elective students choose to opt out of homestays?
Although our internships and medical electives use homestays for housing, medical elective students traveling in groups of 3 or more can opt out of the homestay option. This changes the program fee and what is included, which typically reflects full coverage of meals, which would not be the case if students opt out of homestays. They would cover the cost of preparing their own meals in the independent housing we provide.
How do medical placements work?
Student services meet with prospective participants to learn more about the type of medical experience most beneficial for their career. Toucan Education Programs works with host hospitals to confirm if they have such placements available. Students who wish to have a more rounded experience can also express their interest. Such experience opens up additional opportunities in other areas in host medical facilities.
How early can students apply for a medical elective?
We recommend that students apply as soon as they know they are interested in pursuing a medical elective in Belize. They can start the application process 6 months to one year before the actual placements. The minimum time to apply is 4-6 months before the placement.
