TEFL Course for Teaching English in Malaysia, Ofqual Level 5

Program Overview
Malaysia requires a foreign English teacher to hold an Employment Pass, and you cannot apply for it yourself. Your employer files through its account with the Immigration Department's Expatriate Services Division, and the Expatriate Committee or relevant authorities must clear you for the post before the pass is issued.
English teaching carries one more step. The division names English Language Teacher among the roles that need a Teaching Permit, with the application subject to endorsement by the agency that approves education posts. The pass itself can run up to 60 months under your contract, applies only in Peninsular Malaysia and ties you to the company named on it.
The usual starting option is the 120 Hour Advanced TEFL Course, which needs C1 English but no degree or teaching experience. If you prefer a regulated qualification that an employer can look up, the Level 5 TEFL Diploma, Ofqual 610/1571/4, is 180 hours and awarded by Highfield Qualifications.
Either way the study is online and self paced, with 6 months' access, tutor support and optional live Zoom classes, then use job assistance and the TEFL Institute job board to look for roles in Malaysia.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to all the most common questions about The TEFL Institute Group.
Who applies for the Employment Pass when I teach English in Malaysia?
Your employer does, because expatriates cannot submit their own passes. The company files under its Expatriate Services Division account, and you need approval for the job from the Expatriate Committee or relevant authorities first. Only then does the Immigration Department of Malaysia issue the pass. Since the pass depends on your contract, keep a signed copy handy and ask your school where the application stands.
What is the Teaching Permit for English language teachers in Malaysia?
It is an extra requirement for certain education roles. The Expatriate Services Division's FAQ on its revised salary policy for expatriates lists English Language Teacher as one such position and says the application is subject to endorsement by the approving or regulatory agency for education. Raise it with any school that makes you an offer, so you know who prepares it and how it runs alongside your Employment Pass.
How long does a Malaysian Employment Pass last, and where is it valid?
The pass can run from 1 to 60 months, depending on your contract and what the Expatriate Committee approves. It works as a multiple entry visa, but it covers Peninsular Malaysia alone and one employer, the company printed on the pass, so moving to another employer means a fresh application. For salary thresholds, the division counts your basic monthly salary taxable in Malaysia and leaves out allowances and bonuses.
Can I go to Malaysia as a tourist first and look for a teaching job?
Treat that plan with caution. UK government advice says anyone who is not a tourist needs a visa before traveling, and that you must file an online arrival card before entry. Applicants still outside Malaysia can request a Visa with Reference alongside the pass. Overstaying, even by a few days, can lead to detention, a fine, deportation paid for by you and a ban on coming back, so sort out the pass before you start work.
Which TEFL Institute course suits a plan to teach English in Malaysia?
Pick by what you need from the certificate. The 120 Hour Advanced TEFL Course is the starting option for core skills, with no degree or experience needed. The Level 5 TEFL Diploma, Ofqual 610/1571/4, is a 180 hour regulated qualification from Highfield Qualifications. The 310 Hour Hybrid leads to the Level 5 Advanced Diploma, Ofqual 610/1573/8, with extra modules and 10 hours of live online teaching practice.
