Nosy Be Island Conservation and Community Project
Program Overview
Volunteer on the island of Nosy Be, off Madagascar's north-west coast, with Mora Mora — a locally run NGO conducting marine and forest conservation alongside community education. Madagascar's wildlife is overwhelmingly endemic, making habitat loss irreversible in a way rarely seen elsewhere. This program offers a rare chance to contribute meaningfully to protecting Lokobe National Park's old-growth rainforest and surrounding coral reefs, home to black lemurs, panther chameleons, and rich marine biodiversity.
The program is ideal for individuals passionate about conservation or community development, regardless of prior experience. Full training is provided on arrival, covering survey techniques, wildlife tracking, and species identification. Conservation fieldwork includes biodiversity and endangered-species surveys, lemur monitoring, bird counts, reef surveys, and beach clean-ups. Community work spans children's learning sessions, adult English literacy classes, gender-equality workshops, and classroom refurbishment in nearby villages.
Volunteers stay in a solar-powered research station in dormitory-style rooms, with lunch and dinner provided on weekdays.
