Program Overview

Operated by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation, the Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Sanctuary rescues, rehabilitates, and (when possible) releases orangutans affected by deforestation and the illegal pet trade. Through expert care and structured rehabilitation, these incredible apes are given a second chance at life in the wild.

You can support their journey by volunteering with The Great Projects. Help care for over 280 orangutans by creating enrichment, construction and maintenance tasks, reforestation, and behavioural observation. Volunteers work with the orangutans at various stages of rehabilitation, and those who have found a forever home at the sanctuary due to illness, injury, or humanization.

During your stay, you'll enjoy unique experiences, such as boating to pre-release islands, watching baby orangutans after forest school, and touring the veterinary clinic with Dr. Arga, as seen on the TV show Orangutan Jungle School. You'll also immerse yourself in Bornean culture on a hilltop hike passing Dayak shrines, exploring a local night market, and visiting a sustainable farm with live music.
