Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between TEFL and CELTA?

The letters can indeed be confusing. TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) has been around a long time as a description of what we do as language teachers. You need to be careful of on-line courses or quick weekend training sessions as these do not have the same value as the Cambridge University’s CELTA. If you are going to invest in a qualificatio it is best to choose one that has worldwide status in the industry.

Is CELTA only for native speakers of English?

CELTA is open to absolutely anyone who meets the Cambridge criteria for entry, irrespective of nationality or native language. They stipulate simply that the candidate needs to “have an awareness of language and a competence in both written and spoken English which will enable you to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels”. If you’re not sure about your level, you’re very welcome to get in touch with to discuss this.

What is the course like?

CELTA courses have a reputation for being extremely hard work. People often describe them as being like a whirlwind but with a lot of fun as well. We aim to give you the right mix of theory and practice so that at the end of the course you can identify concrete aspects of your teaching which you feel you are competent in.

How many people will be on the course?

On your course there will most likely be ten to twelve people. For CELTA courses there are always two tutors and no more than six students per tutor.

Will I be able to find work easily after the course?

We are regularly solicited by employers both locally and internationally asking for CELTA graduates. We have an organic relationship with many medium and large sized language companies who trust the quality of CELTA graduates we send them.
