Frequently Asked Questions

How do I qualify for Spirit Cultural Exchange's J-1 Teacher Program?

To be eligible for the J-1 Teacher Exchange Program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

- Bachelor's degree in education, teaching, or the subject they intend to teach
- At least two years of full-time teaching experience
- Certified or qualified to teach in their home country
- Currently teaching, or have recently earned an advanced degree in the subject they plan to teach

Spirit Premium vs. Independent Placement: What’s the Difference?

Spirit Cultural Exchange's Premium Placement places qualified international teachers with Spirit-identified and vetted US schools.

Independent Placement is for teachers who already have a job offer from an accredited K–12 school and need a J-1 visa sponsor. It’s the most affordable way to join the J-1 Teacher Program through Spirit Cultural Exchange.

Can my family travel with me on the J-1 Teacher Program?

Spirit Cultural Exchange offers J-2 visa program sponsorship for Teacher Program spouses and dependents under 21 years of age. Child dependents must be 19 or younger at the time of application. It is strongly recommended that you arrive first to settle into your community, begin teaching, and identify long-term housing. Any potential future dependents should be disclosed at the time of initial teacher application.
