I signed up for a volunteer trip not knowing how I would forever be changed. I worked with a refugee camp school and orphanage during my 1st trip volunteering With SFLIG. I have since made life long connections and friends. Thank you for giving me a purpose to serve in a very special way.

This experience is one of inspiration. I gave the children the supplies I brought. I have help and worked along side loving care givers teaching, learning to cool and encouraging the children in every way. Everyone has been kind and welcoming and the children have captured my heart forever.

Got to experience 9 different orphanages while here in Ghana and everyone provided a unique opportunity in building relationships with all of the children and directors. My experience with the children were astounding they had so much love for me even in their poverty their smiles shined in my heart . Had a opportunity to visit a mentally challenged facility and they were able to show their love also ,there were many physical needs there as far as their facility goes but children were very loving just tremendous I recommend anyone who wants a life changing experience to come to Ghana and solutions for life and see the love these children have to give.

I went in without many expectations and I’m so glad I did because I ended up doing things I would have never expected. I signed up for a medical program. The local team was great in setting up outreach programs which were fantastic (although of course with any developing country the frustration always lies in whether or not the patients will follow up or be able to afford to continue their treatment), however my day to day “work” in the clinic or hospital would be better suited for a medical student (which I’m sure is the majority of medical internship volunteers), not a practicing provider. It was mostly observation and education. I truly did appreciate the education as I don’t see tropical diseases where I’m from nor do I see many HIV patients. It was fantastic seeing and learning about diseases I had only read about. But, i came to Ghana to be productive. A few weeks in I did see an opportunity to be more productive when one of the boys in our orphanage was not enrolled in school and so I decided to move away from the medical program and more into teaching him English and how to read. The local team okayed the switch (even though I still went to the clinic a couple of times a week). This by far was the biggest challenge and I am so grateful to have taken this on. This little boy taught me so much more than I ever expected to learn. I fell in love with the boys and in the orphanage and the kids in the community. I have been in many developing countries so nothing really surprised me here. The biggest disappoint for me was all the trash everywhere (beach, street, parks). Our accommodations were clean and comfortable. The local team manager and her staff were GREAT. They took such good care of us. I really appreciate all the steps they took to ensure our safety, comfort and transition into a new country. I also appreciate how flexible they were in me changing up my program, as mentioned above. TIPS: Go with an open mind because things don’t always go as planned. Be flexible. Be patient. I think an actual practitioner needs to be aware that the only hands on experience will be through outreach programs that sally can definitely set up. That practitioner should be prepared to either bring medicine or purchase medicine for the people after seeing them because the people won’t be able to buy it for themselves most likely. I ended up exceeding my budget (which I’m ok with) by buying medication for the people to at least start their treatments but it’s something to consider prior to going.

Words cannot describe how life changing my experience in Ghana was. The support I received, the warm welcoming, the friendly people, and most importantly, the sweetest kids. Being in Future Stars Organization through SFLIG was the best decision I ever made, so happy with the outcome and how I was able to help them, because they extremely need our help. Hopefully I will be coming back soon!

Going to Ghana to volunteer with children sounded like the best idea when presented to me by my friend and travel companion Bailey. Little did know how much the experience would fill my heart! The beauty of the Ghanaian culture and people were like no other. I felt safe, welcomed and very well taken care of at all times. The kindness and warmth in each one of their hearts was pretty extraordinary, unlike some other countries I have visited. The affection, smiles and laughter from the children I worked with will be in my thoughts and heart forever. The Love Volunteer staff members were so helpful in creating a smooth process from start to finish with regular check-ins, and always being available to assist. I have already recommended this experience to family and friends and would love to go to Ghana!

I went to Ghana and stayed with the most wonderful host family. I was introduced to an amazing culture and felt very welcomed and supported. I learned a lot about myself while working in Ghana. The people of Ghana have the biggest and purest hearts. I will never forget the people I met the relationships I formed while in Ghana. I will forever have a second family.
