My Experience Volunteering with the Shami Arabic institute in Jordan

My name is Sara, I am 25 years old, and I volunteered at the Shami Arabic institute for three weeks. At home I am a welder, but I have a love for Amman and have been wanting to do work in Amman and human rights. I decided to choose the Amman program to build up some experience and expand my portfolio, while getting to learn about Jordan and see and experience it in person. I also have always wanted to visit the Middle East in general, and learn Arabic, so to me it was a perfect opportunity that ended up being an amazing experience. Your time in the Institute is based largely on what you set out to do when you come here, with room for change and flexibility. I came to get experience in my chosen field and to learn Arabic, so my days would start off with Arabic lessons, and then afterwards either a trip to a site, a meeting with a journalist/human rights center/local activist, or touring local areas. The Institute will set up things in regards to your program, however they are open if you have specific things you want to achieve, and will work that into your program. The staff here, and the teachers, are fantastic. I had Arabic lessons with Sajida, and just with three weeks at 1-2 hours a day, I am now able to have (fairly simple) conversation in Arabic with Jordanians here in Amman.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to all the most common questions about Shami Institute.

Can I combine Arabic classes with volunteering?

Yes! Most participants do both. You can study Modern Standard Arabic or Levantine dialect in the morning and volunteer with our local NGO partners in the afternoon. This unique structure allows you to immediately practice your conversational skills in real-world cultural settings while making a community impact.

Do I need to speak Arabic to volunteer?

No prior Arabic knowledge is required. Many of our community tracks are fully accessible to beginners, and our team provides English-language support. Placements are tailored to your skills and interests—ranging from youth mentoring to cultural exchange—ensuring you can contribute meaningfully from day one.

What is the accommodation setup like?

We arrange fully furnished shared or private apartments in safe, vibrant neighborhoods in Amman. The housing includes daily traditional breakfast, high-speed internet, and utilities. You will live alongside international peers with easy access to both the institute and your volunteer sites.

What happens if my visa gets rejected?

We provide a protective policy for travel disruptions. If you provide official proof of a visa refusal by Jordanian authorities or a documented medical emergency, we will issue a 100% refund of your tuition and program fees (minus standard banking wire fees), even up to 48 hours before arrival.

Why choose Shami over standard language apps?

We bridge textbook grammar with daily spoken reality. With a strict cap of 5 students per class, our native instructors customize lessons to your pace. Plus, by integrating classes with local volunteering, your environment becomes a living classroom, building real conversational confidence.
